Missing Cray Pots - Carnac Island
Submitted by Browneye85 on Tue, 2020-12-29 19:25
Hi,
Was with my mate dropping new cray pots about 100-150m west of Carnac Island today. They wernt sinking very well despite having ballast. We watched for a while until it looked like they had sunk and then did some drifting.
When we came back to check before heading in, the pots were gone. Had a good look around and dont think they would have drifted away as there wasn't much current.
They are steel bottom, jarrah and pine pots with orange floats. Gear ID SB0485.
If anybody picked them up so they didn't drift away or saw them, would appreciate your help getting them back. I know its a long shot but worth asking.
Cheers

pots
Ihope you get them back. Unfortunately there are a lot of pot thieves in this area. I did not bother putting them out this year as evry timei i put them out i had them stolen. An other factor are the loonies and cray boat skippers who flog thru the and end up cutting your lines. All of my freinds who fish the area loose pots on a regular basis. Very best wishes for the new year.

Pots
Sounds like the pots didnt have enough weight in them. Could have drifted.
Steel bases only or did they have additional fish plates in it as well?
Silly question but any chance the rope got tangled and pulled under seeing as they were dropping slowly?

browney from your description
browney from your description of it sounds like they did not have enough weight in them
the steel base was it steel angle with with weld mesh or timber frame with weldmesh ?
you really need steel angle with steel bar or rod right across the base and a welded weight of at least 5-6 kg
if they did not sink heavily quickly when dropped ,,its possible they have drifted away while you where out fishing ,,, bit of wind and current will see them float along on bottom , even at 1-2 knots per hour they will move a km or so easily
best hope is another boatie might recognise your floats here and get in touch

It's a pretty reefy area
It's a pretty reefy area there sounds like they have drifted even dry all timber pots should sink at a steady pace when dry, but hopefully they have got caught in some reef may be stuck when you finally find them. That area is bad though for people who like to go flat out as close to pots as possible they even do it to me while you are pulling your pots.
rather be fishing

Thanks guys, they had a rail
Thanks guys, they had a rail iron weight in each so we were really surprised that they wernt sinking. Seems we underestimated just how much weight is needed! An expensive lesson we waont forget!
Got a call from my mate this morning and one was found out at 5 fathom which seems a bit strange given the direction the current was moving. Still happy to have gotten one back!

Interesting, as I was tailor
Interesting, as I was tailor fishing in close behind Garden Island last week, and couldn't believe the amount of Floats washed up onto the Beach.
Not just a few here and there, heaps of them!
Which means there's a lot of Pots sitting on the ocean floor out there.
My Dad taught me how to Fish-Thanks Dad.(RIP)

i have set up mine
with enough balst for the cray pot to weigh 40 -44 kg. /- dry weight , this eliminates drift and possible opportunistic undesirables
