Monkey mia 2015 - daily reports
Hello all.
It's that time of the year again when I pack up the family, the dog, the camping and fishing gear and the boat. we're off to monkey mia next week for three weeks.
As always there is much planning, much shopping and this year a bit more shopping as I inadvertently turned off the deep freeze with about 12 monkey mia meals in it..... hmmm lost browning points there....
One more day of work and then it's holidays. off to rottnest this weekend purely for a wedding. no fishing opportunity there unfortunately.
Tuesday we're off to s bend (we leave late to accommodate my daughter's specialty music lesson). and the Wednesday onto monkey mia.
my wife tells me wind finder says no wind on Thursday so hopefully boat in the water and tight lines.
now I have mastered photobucket, I will post reports in the comments.

Thanks guys. It's a great place. If I don't get any PBs, or new species, I'd settle for finding new ground. very keen to explore the eastern side of faure island which I believe holds really good black snapper (there's a bucket list fish.... a 50 cm black snapper / blue lined or grass emperor)

Just been up to denham/Monkie Mia
Unfortunately boatless because a day before the break mechanism on the trailor failed.
Still beached fish, but bloody hell it was slow after the cyclone ravaged the area a little. 2 big beatiful gums blown apart near the shop and Boughshed Restuarant. Some other minor damage and Managers yacht was still marooned on the Beach north off the resort.
Boaties didnt fare any better in the first few days, but then things changed and fished started coming overboard.
Moved into Denham to fish around there as our normal shore based spots have been shut - Francois Peron NP closed, but hopefully should be open now.
Still scored some whopping big YFwhiting easily lazying around Denham area.
Always got a feed of these delicious fish with ease.
Squid as usual at the jetty with 8 big ones in about 20minutes to add to the seafood fare.
Best "bait" was gulp blood works in any colour, aslong as there was red in the mix. Outfished all natural bait and more durable. Smaller models left the worms alone so selected the kidney slappers.
Have fun mate, and maybe drag the boat up there next time for bloody sure.

All colours mate
The squid was a little funny. They would approach a lure and sometimes back away. After 2 tries with the same colour they wouldnt look at it again. I changed perhaps 10 times but my trusty 2.5 Haramitsu in orange seem to do the damage. 3 and 3.5 didnt seem to work well, and at one stage I even tried a tiny "shrimp" (I think haramitsu) brown/seethrough and they were all over it.
Oh - night time. The Jetty was packed during the day as boats returned/got serviced etc after the cyclone and we didnt want to upset the crews.

I called into the tackle shop for fuel
and a restock of some jigs. The guy behind the counter showed me of a video clip of a huge, 2+metre cod gulping down a metre plus hooked shark in one go. apparently the second shark for the night. This was taken 3 nights ago and the cod was back again the following night.

First day on the water it
First day on the water
it was a bit windy for trolling so the wife and kids chose to go back to camp. that allowed me to go in hunt of some bottom fish. headed out towards the island to a spot known locally and commonly as the second channel. resorted to a handline and bait as nothing was interested in the soft plastic. but it seamed every good bite was paid to the tax man.. Landed some undersize pinks and an undersized blup lined. caught a little butterfish so here was a chance to try out the new live tank. worked well. rigged up the livie on a bridle and sent him down... poor little bugger didn't even make the bottom before it was hammered. set the hook and had a couple of minutes of fun before being sharked again. The next double header of small pinks were followed all the way by a grey coat right to the boat so I thought it was time to move.
headed to a spot closer to monkey mia and the sounder lit up...
and my first cast with a soft plastic resulted in this...
and then second drift, second cast, this...
first one, 60 cm and second 52 cm. being only one on board that was my bag limit. So in i came.
looks like the weather gods are smiling for the next few days, so tight lines I hope.

bloody hell ! thought I would go further afield today.... got to a spot, sounder lit up (will post screen shots later) but nothing... heard lots of chatter on the radio that other boats were seeing the same with no results.... got a couple of small blacks and small pinks. trolled for a while without any luck. Our camp neighbours left at the same time and came back at the same time.... (ie all afternoon) and said all the fish they caught were in one half an hour. water movement here is proving critical. must be in the right spot at the high turn of the tide....
best thing I saw all day was this view!

at least the dockers had a win.

We done well today, denham
We done well today, denham side, got our limit between 3 off us, big cods, blue line empeor and spanish flag.
but like you say when there was no movement it was dead. But it can be one extreme to the other. Yesterday arvo where we we're fishing the current was that strong the drift was all over the shop, we were drifting a different direction every time we tried anchoring and just was nearly in possible task to set our selves up. Ended up pulling the pin and headed home. But today was a good day.
hopfully tommorow is the same.

a (slightly) better day
a (slightly) better day today. went for a morning troll that landed a school mackerel. will use that for bait. came in and waited for the change of tide abd headed out to the second channel. Landed a 60 cm pinkie. wife hooked onto something very big before it busted off, unseen.
was a magnificent day on the water. glassed off almost all day.
kids have used all our wifi data allowance..... preventing me uploading photos.. but when I have that sorted I will post them.
I have landed three pink snapper keepers to date (60, 52, 60 cm), all on soft plastics. All have been hooked by a newly added assist hook working as a stinger in the tail of the SP. In past years I would have lost these fish, and the tail of my soft plastic.
will post photos when I can...

WIFI
Dont you get access there from the office. I think the cost to get some more data is not very pricy. Shikes it still sounds slow after we were up there. Neighbours in the Villas next door gave up on heading to the island side and headed up along Francios Peron to some semi deep water there and fared better. Possibly give that a bash. But as I have never fished this side cant give you any hints about where it was.
Good luck mate. Say high to bloody Nicky for me!!!! (dolphin that is)

We have our own wifi device
We have our own wifi device prepaid, but we're fighting everyone at the park for access to the tower anyway. And at best it's 3G (occasionally....). add to that the kids have used up the prepaid in a matter of days... not happy about that. they're paying for the next lot.
weather is crap here today. overcast, raining and windy. stay at camp day and catch up on chores. boat re-fuelled etc etc....

Randall have you tried the deep holes around faure island? There are some on the west side the water is beautiful blue green colour then the holes appear deep blue. They are actually scarey cruising across them and didnt actually have time to fish them but they would be worth a go. You can see them on google earth S25.85 E113.83 ish

I want to get over the east
I want to get over the east side and find the channels. that's where people are catching. I am caught between a rock and a hard place at the moment. The family won't travel far on the boat or in anything other than glass offs. The kids don't want to come at all. on the nice days I am obliged to accommodate the wife's fishing close to monkey mia so we're not far from the kids and dog. If I force them all to come I am being nasty. I just want to go fishing and need all day to explore those areas. so it's wait for a day when the wife is happy to stay at the camp all day.....

Been in that situation a few times, my misses plus girls don't fish at all and my boys only half hearted. We have been to shark bay a few times. Usually stay at Denham. Last year we struggled a little and ended up posting on here for some clues. We never clean up but always get something and 80% of the time we have the whole family out with us. But it is always great on those days when the girls go "shopping" in town even though it costs ya a small fortune at least the boys get a good day quenching the thirst.

Bloody hell
The boys in the big boat are still up there. They own those beach shelters and when we were up there had it set up all the time. Staying in the Deluxe oceanside Villas and I think they were staying a month. I think 4 families. 4 dead keen blokes with 2 boats, and one wife that appears more off a fishing fanatic than all the boys added up.
Those sunrises are spectacular for sure.
Oops might be wrong as they had the shelters closer to the charter cats but probably are still there.

went exploring around faure island yesterday and found some of the unmarked channels or gutters that people speak of. again could see fish on the sounder but only undersize blacks and pinks landed.
interpret this as a predetor underneath a bait bail forcing it up in the middle:
and I really expected to land something decent here, but alas nothing but a small black...

I think i must have kicked a black cat...
its been a grey, overcast, humid day here and the wind blowing from the north is never a good thing. went for a troll out the front in the first channel. had three lures out and my purple stripey got smashed in about 5 metres of water. The strike was hard and fast and had the hallmarks of a spanaird. I grabbed the rod, the missus stopped the boat, the fish was still running, the reel was screaming. I tighten the drag to slow him down and.....
ping went the brand new 150 lb Richter wind on leader..... FUCK!!!!
that about sums up my week so far.

why complicate things with wind on leaders!
just tie on flurocarbon direct to your braid via a fg of pr knot, it's a whole lot cheaper and far stronger.

Got out for a quick jig and
Got out for a quick jig and bottom bounce while the birthday boy run amuk around the park with a new mate. :)
set up, for my first drift, first cast of the soft plastic, hooked into a decent size school mackerel. thought I would net this one seeing as I dropped the last one boat side trying to land it. went to grab the net out of its holder and hooked one of my cheap rods in the rocket launcher and flipped it out over the side. luckily it landed horizontal and I was quick enough to grab it before it sank too far. perhaps my luck is changing??? landed the maccie, it gad destroyed the plastic so I baited a bottom rig. Landed a nice sized spanish flag. it was pretty windy and i had promised it was only a short stint so i headed in, a touch happier.
tomorrow is looking good on the fishing calendar but the wind is setting in.

The wind has set in here
The wind has set in here with strong south easterlies forecasted for the rest of our time here. The missus and I just ducked out the front and dropped the crab nets in. That was a waste of time. first two nets we pulled had small sharks tangled in them. Both were untangled and released and swam off after a minute or two of revival.
so we pulled the rest and headed in. saw FW member leesfishin anchored nearby, so went over and said hello to Lee and his lovely wife. had a chat about fishing and camping in monkey mia. sounds like Lee has been doing well at dampier reef and turtle bay over on the other side. A good bloke, and a nice boat.

Mate if the wind blows a gale
just head towards the red cliffs behind the pearl farm (access should be open now) and fish in close to shore landbased on an incoming tide with red gulp worm or bait worms or squid. Should at least get a sweet feed of fat as KGs YFwhiting. I have never been up to Denham (with or without boat) without targetting these delish whopper whiting at least a few days. Not to far to travel and you can access the beach from there if the cyclone hasnt caused havoc with the track from the top of the cliffs down to the beach.
Im sure you know where I mean, but the turnoffs to the cliffs is the first sign after going over the hill after Monkey Mia. There is two tracks heading towards the sea about 200m apart. The second is the best. Just Google earth if you are not aware. Love sitting on the chairs, chilling with a few beers, spotting the schools and sight casting to them, or even more lazy let a worm just soak out there.
At least it is better than sitting at home watching TV.

Had a lovely day on the water with my best fishing buddy (my wif). started with a decent size squid :) into the new live bait tank at about 11:00 am, still very healthy at 4:00 pm when I took it out to kill and clean it. didn't use it as a live bait as it was on the large size, and it will go well in a marinara!
the wind didnt eventuate so we went out to the second channel and got a nice black spot tusk fish (blue bone) on crab legs, but it only measured about 40.2 cm (the .2 were the teeth). so back it went.
then karin pulled in a blue lined emporer that measured 31.5 cm..... back that went.
then I picked up a bigger black spot tusk fish on 9 kg mono. at 49cm it was a good battle. but I won and in the esky it went
lost a couple of live butteries, either to spanairds or sharks, i like to think spanairds...
but at last we didn't come home with an empty esky. very happy to have found grounds were I can catch squid at monkey mia!!! and very happy to see a live squid in the bait tank!

Well. yesterday was pack up day and this morning we head south on out way home. It's been great to get away for a break but jeez the fishing has been hard work. Not through lack of trying that's for sure. Some days I have traveled 40+ miles looking for fish. anyway I had to empty the deep freeze to lift it up into the boat. it didn't take long.... Two pink snapper, a blue bone, a spanish flag and a couple of school mackerel..... and we ate a pink snapper and half a school mackerel while we were here.
speaking with people around the resort, it's been an all too familiar story.
Would love to have had more fishing posts and photos for you all, but I suppose you'll have to wait until I go to Steep Point in 28 days!

Dont feel alone
When we were up there just recently all the fish was shut down. I was going to tow the Traily up, but checked the hubs (all good) but problems with trailer brakes caused me to think twice.
My prefered fish is shark bay whiting so decided to target that from shore, but Monkey Mia side even that was shut down. As mentioned the boaties next door didnt fare well offshore either, and another mate is up there ATM and calls it so far AWOFF (a waste of Fn Fuel). I suspect the cyclone had something to do with it. Be interesting to see when it returns to normal. Client of mine heading up in 2 weeks and promised to keep me updated. As a matter of fact promised to show brag pictures as they hope it improve by then.
But as mentioned better to fish and get nothing, than to not fish and work!!!
Safe travelling mate and thanks for a great post. There should be more off these types as they are very interesting.
Sorry about Sunday, because we are due to flog you. But then as Two Team I cant realy loose can I!!!

Geez Randall,
could be time to find a new fishing destination. Further north say Coral Bay of Exmouth?
Not much reward for alot of hard work, barely one days limit from what I can tell.
Perhaps chuck the boat in back in Perth and catch a few salmon

I suppose when you go to a place year after year you have to take the good with the bad. about 3 years ago we bought back 38 kilos of fillet! it is a family holiday primarily and a lovely place to be, fish or no fish.
home now and doing the depressing unpack
I'll just hope to fare better at steep point in 28 days time with the boys
that's the fishing trip!
