Need a new camera

My missus requires a new camera, her old one carked it (again, its now out of warranty)

Was advised by a friend who has a canon 450D, to look at that model.  I have a compact point and shoot model, so we looking at getting one to take some quality photos like some of the FW members post up.

Any advice from knowledgable members would be appreciated

Thanks

I just got a Nikon D3100. Not bad for the price. Also got 2 vr lenses all for under a grand. Only thing this camera doesnt have is exposure bracketing, mainly used for hdr and making sure you get the right expoosure settings, but I can cheat and use raw photos. Otherwise its good. Rated best entry level camera by a heap of camera sites.

Id pm Tailor Marc or Kelvin8r, there pretty clued up.

i have a G9 i am going to sell

Sun, 2011-07-10 08:29

you can have it for $150 if you want. it takes SLR type photos, nearly HD video and is compact (lens goes in itself still).

I just bought the Canon 500D SLR. the difference between a 450D and a 500D is that the 500D and above take video too, but they are not made for video (don't auto focus etc) just capable. the SLR cameras take immediate photos which is why i got it to capture smiles etc on my very young kids.

the SLRs are fantastic but much bulkier and more expensive. You may wish to consider a two lens kit too so you can zoom from a long way away. the nikons are just as good. pick them up and try them out to see if you like the feel and weight.

"not made for video, just capable" ?

Not so sure about that statement...... Many music videos, television commercials and television shows make very good use of HD DSLR cameras, namely the Canon 5Dmk2, 1Dmk4 and 7D models... Sure they are not your point and shoot handycams, but used properly are an awesome tool !

Sun, 2011-07-10 08:47

Nikon DSLR camera's are together with Cannon DSLR camera's the sure way to go.

Sadly Nikon stopped making the D40 as it is a ripper of a camera for the $$ paid.

It pays to do a fair bit of research or talk to someone who has the knowledge.

Full frame DSLR camera's are expensive and 99.9% of the time you do not use al the capabilities.

Thanks guys, it is a difficult situation.  Living in Karratha limits my chance to look at the models and talk to someone with knowledge.

I am hoping to get some great scenery shots, but dont want to have to edit and fudge things on the computer.  I want the photos to be quality from the start.

Also, thinking of action shots eg leaping billfish, it needs to be fast to take the photos instantly

Synthos, the G12 looks ok with a cheaper price.  How fast will it take a shot of a billfish in mid flight

Any of the dslrs are quick. (mine is) most take 3-4 shots a second as well so you can get the good action sequence. Comes down to how much you want to spend, and if you want to take scenery shots and action shots it pays to learn how to use the camera in full manual mode.

Sun, 2011-07-10 09:59

I've got the Canon 7D, it shoots 8fps, perfect for that billy jump shot. If that is what you want to photograph I would consider your lens choices  to be of importance, you either shoot Ultra wide angle for deck/boat shots or use a zoom for fish jumps. Ultimately, to not miss any action, having 2 cameras is the go, one shooting wide deck action (Tokina 11-16mm) the other cam with a zoom (24-70mm) (70-200mm). If you decide on a zoom, having IS (image stabilizer) in the lens will help. Lenses are very important,  stay clear of kit lenses and buy good quality proven primes or zooms

Sun, 2011-07-10 10:35

Pale Ale, go and speak to Viginia at the camera shop in town and get an idea of what you like - if the price is too high, atleast you will have an idea and you can chase one up on the net. Ive got the Canon 450D (or something) and it takes great all round shots without having to know what every acronym in the photography world means! Sports mode, point at Marlin and hold finger down, delete the shit.

The rest of the modes are for the missus and kids to figure out.

Personally I dont think you can go past the "beginner" canon or nikons (very close between them)

I have a D5000 Nikon and love it, got it just before the 5100 was anounced so it was SUPER cheap.

Personally I would be happy to buy online again, was cheap with great service. If you want the shop name PM me.

Many options there guys.  There were a couple 450D on ebay (second hand) went for $550 with lenses, so probably a good deal.  Also found in Hong Kong 550D for $750ish with lens.  Might go for the new one from Hong kong, it has 1 yr Oz warranty.  No need to rush into this, just wanna get it b4 missus drops her bundle.

Canon/Nikon - Alternatives

Sun, 2011-07-10 19:13

Had 2 Panasonics and from the use I have gotten from them I reckon I can highly recommend the brand as an alternative. FT-2 (waterproof compact) which is not really what you are looking for but the GF-1 is a DSLR-like camera that is a lot more discretely sized interchangeable lens camera (no mirror, no viewfinder). Not for everyone but suits some.

For me lugging around an SLR often meant it got left behind because you get tired of looking like a press photographer. Ended up utilising the FT-2 almost all the time.

Mon, 2011-07-11 05:09

I'm thinking the Nikon D3100 will do me?  Might even just stick with the stock standard 18-55mm lense for starters.  I'm thinking it's better to start with something that's easy to use until I learn a bit more.  I just want something that takes a decent pic and easy to use.  The D3100 looks like it should do that at a pretty good price?

Tue, 2011-07-12 17:14

Hey wazzbat, the D3100 is a great camera. Entry level that is. I'm using one myself. But what the other comments about lenses are accurate. in fact, it doesn't really matter which body you get. Lens play a huge role in quality pictures. D5100 is good too but slightly more damage to ya pocket. If you are just starting to pick up SLR photography, I'd suggest buying a Nikon. Canons are a lil more complicated to use in terms of functions and buttons. Nikons are simpler and they have a built in guide which will help you go along as you learn (something which I hardly use though). If you'd like, visit my portfolio and take a look. they are all taken using D3100 and kit lenses. www.flickr.com/photos/shutteringlife/

I still have a heap of photos that I have got no time to process so it's only that few pictures at the moment. I'm adding more during the week as I'm quite free now to do them.

Cheers, hope this helps

Cheers

The Nikon D5100 and D3100 both get good reviews for beginner DSLRs so I'll probably end up with one of the two.  I'm thinking I might spend the extra $150 or so to get the D5100.   I'm a bit funny like that - hate buying the base model???  Anyway - checked out your pics and if I can get a few like that I'd be pretty happy - Good stuff.  That's the main reason I want an SLR.  My boys are 3 and 5 now and I want to start capturing a few memories to keep for the future.

Has anyone done any beginner "courses" in DSLRs?  And is it worth it?  I'm a total newbie when it comes to photography.

I havent coz I dont have the time but there is a wealth of information on the internet. I know people who have done courses and been happy. There are a few available at TAFE. There is a guide mode on the nikons which I found helpful to get you started. There are a few on here that post there photos and are really good to look at. If your budget spreads id definately go the 5100. Sort of wish I had but im definately limited due to fundage.

A Nikon 18-55mm lens is brilliant.

Together with a Nikon55-200 VR is just about all you ever need.

Next step up is a full frame DSLR.

Mon, 2011-07-11 11:05

Hi,

One thing to take note as well is that if you have a nikon and your mate got a canon, you guys cant swap lenses.

I use a Nikon D90 came with a 18-105mm (hardly use ) and owns a 105mm f2.8 macro lens and a 35mm f2.8 lens. It all depends on what type of photography you prefer as well.

I really love my 35mm f2.8 and have been using it for close-up, potrait and low-light situation. To me, i think you need to also know what type of lenses you want. I personally prefer sharp lenses with at least f2.8 or lower but of course they are not cheap.

Good luck and check gumtree, you may pick something up at a good price :)

Thanks again for your help.

I suppose I want to priority take landscape / wilderness photos - to capture the beauty of WA.  But also would like the fast shots for billies / barra when they jump.  And, as we are having a baby soon, we should have some quality photos there too!!  I have a 12megapixel compact which I will use for basic photos.

Missus does not want second hand now, cos she wants at least 12 mths warranty.

Probably will go for the new canons from hong kong.  They have the warranty and about half price of Karratha deals.

Warranty

Mon, 2011-07-11 17:26

I'd be cautious about the "AUS warranty" if purchased from Hong Kong... chances are, should you need warranty service, Canon Australia will not look at the camera... hence one of the reasons why you pay a bit more locally !

It all comes down to if you want to take the gamble and save a couple hundred $$'s......90+% of the time you will be fine...

Mon, 2011-07-11 18:44

I bought my lenses from Melbourne and I am from Perth btw. So, i do get australian warranty and above that I get very competitive prices as well. ALSO, if you are going hong kong, you can claim TRS within 30 days after purchase so you do plan ahead. I did that and my lens work out to be $10 cheaper than grey import and I still get local warranty.

Pm send regarding where and who to contact ;)

Tue, 2011-07-12 17:17

for landscape, you'd want to get wide angle lens. but 18-105mm is a good lens to start with for that. for wildlife photography, there are quite a few options, but you'd definitely need high zoom lenses. to start with, i reckon the kit 55-200 is good enough.

those nat geo photos you see, they are mostly taken using lenses that cost up to 10grand

If you mean only wildlife

Tue, 2011-07-12 17:46

If you mean only wildlife photos, then sure. But at least sub 200mm, nearly all the lenses are under $3000 at least. Lots of very decent lenses under $1000 (mainly primes) that i'm sure many NG photographers could produce the same photos. You can get some incredibly good photos with lenses under $1000.  On canon, something like the 50 f/1.8 is only $130 and can produce excellent images rivalling the best photos.

But its not necessarily the lens that matters (unless the lens is too slow for the DOF effect you want). The most important part of the camera is the 10cm behind the eyepiece ;)   I wish I could buy a better one of those, lol.

Came second in one of the photography magazines camera of the year 2010 and was half the price of the one that won - I have a 55 - unbelievable 10f a second using an ultra hs card and some of the best and quickest autofocus (on smart auto) - catch some amazing action shots even as a rank bunny using a camera

And Sony's new one (which a mate just bought) is not quite as quick but has 30 X Optical zoom

Looks like a pretty good price delivered.  Could always buy the other bits and pieces as we go.  Extra memory cards, batteries, case, lenses tec tec.

Actually I was thinking of buying a hard case from Bunnings.  They're $89 I think.  Kingchrome.  It would be a bit bulky but would protect the camera well.

Pretty much how much it zooms. higher the number the further it zooms. the f number is also important. the lower the f number the more light the lens lets in so better in darker places.

f stop number is the size of the aperture. besides the amount of light it allows into the sensor, it also controls the depth of field. the wider the aperture (smaller f stop, the shallower the depth)

and for a really versatile lens that will give you bang for your buck and will cover a good range from landscape to Tele the 18-200 VR latest model , that's what I started with on my D80 and it's a great lense . A bit expensive

but you will get some great shots with this lense that the 18-55 won't even get close to .

I was talked into getting a Cannon 60D today.  $1540 with the 18-135mm lense from PRA Imaging on Newcastle Street.  They were very helpful so I think I will go back there.  It looks like a good price anyway.

I think I might just get it and deal with the Mrs after.  Or she might deal with me!!!

Still, will have to study Jays topic on getting another lens for different applications.

Good luck with it Pale Ale.  I'm sure it will be a good camera and I should probably get something in that price range too but what the heck!

I think I have convinced the Mrs into getting a new camera but she hasn't asked how much it will cost yet.  I'm gonna go get it today unless she does end up asking!!!

Good luck with the bubs too!  They are hard work but well worth it and at least you will have a good camera from the start.  We have some pretty crappy pics of our 2 boys.  Not any more though!

Went and bought the 60D yesterday and already regretting not getting a DSLR years ago.  What a difference a half decent camera makes.

And, best part is, the Mrs loves it too.

Now just gotta work out how to use it on the manual settings.

Thanks for all your inputs and thanks Pale Ale for starting the thread.  Sorry for hijacking it too.

Mon, 2011-07-18 18:46

I'm too impatient for too much research - will have to have a look now though.

Just the one lens.  I got the 18 - 135mm.  The guys didn't want to sell me the cheaper lenses.  They swore I'd regret it before too long.  So far, it seems pretty good to me.  Got a pretty good zoom range (x 7.5) me thinks?  I reckon the next lens I'll get will be a wide angle or macro lens so I can take some close up shots.  Might be a while away though.  Maybe Santa will bring me one?

As for pics of fishies, I'm not gonna lie to ya, love fishing but don't get out all that much.  Life/Family/Money gets in the way a bit but hopefully when my boys are a bit older, I'll get into it a bit more.
