New Boat Build - Genesis 730xl transducer time ..

G'day everyone,

I dont normally write too much on here but I will give it a crack. After much procrastinating and a lot of indecision I have recently ordered a custom boat to be built by GenesisCraft and am hoping to document the build on here for all to enjoy.

After initial consultation with numerous boat builders I felt immediately comfortable dealing with Matt at Genesis, nothing has been a drama or too much of a hassell. He was only too happy to get a quote out to me late on christmas eve and even said to call over the chrissy break if needed. Fast forward six months and this great customer service has not waivered at all. Another selling point to me was the quality of work which was second to none - I could not fault a thing (myself being a welder trust me I looked hard).

Boat overview:

730xl Hard top with custom ally Genesis trailer

250 Yamaha - will be fitted further down the track

sounders - two 12 in  simrads  ..transducers

Anyway pics of work to date and will post updates as I get them. Cheers

I'll be watching this with great interest, it's good to see things start from scratch and then watch it go through the process of growing to become the finished item. I like the lateral bracing between ribs I have a pressed alli boat and there is none of the strengthening like plate boats.

Enjoy watching a boat come together, a good mate builds the best ally crayboats in WA and Ive been contemplating putting up a thread showing one coming together.

Do it Rob, my old boss had a mate in Freo building them quite a few years ago. He took me down there one day and I watched them lay a keel and I was in awe. I loved the smell of that place.

A mate of ours bought a genesis tinnie

Wed, 2017-06-28 04:59

Had it custom built from 4mm plate Ali and 4.6m long. It's a beast of a tinnie! Goes like the clappers with the big tiller steer donk he put on the back too. Very good build quality and service also

Sure Scanno, that 4.6 tinnie is nice and all, but I thought it would have been better at 30 knots over the rocky outcrops up at the top of the gulf..... :)

I have a 5.8 xl sports 2009, my brother in law next size down and a mate has the same. The only fault we have with them is for a self draining deck that they all leak. The only advice I can give you would be to flood the deck at that stage.to check for leaks. Apart from that i am very happy.if you're painting your boat make sure you have a couple of anodes fitted .

Oldman I recently had an assassin that did the same thing, ended up finding that it was leaking through the fuel tank access floor panel but will take your advice on board.

Similar to mine

Thu, 2017-06-29 09:28

I have the same boat.....now 13 years old. I stretched mine to 7.5m as the old owner (Paul Wagenar, if I remember) asked if I wanted to cut the 9m side sheets cut down and I said no, leave them. Repowered with twin 150hp 4 stroke Yamahas...gets 42 knots. It might be too late for you, but I asked for lots of mods, some of which I'd recommend. One that comes to mind is I built my side rails into the gunwale, so the gunwale is flat. The sides of these boats are huge, so height can be an issue for shorter people. I know I'm biased, but mine is the best fishing boat I have been on. It is not, however, the best riding. I have had mine weighed at 3357kg wet, before I put the 4 strokes on but with steel trailer, so it will round out to around 3.5T. I now have an awesome Ace aluminium trailer. Yours with a single donk and ali trailer will still be over 3T I reckon. Unless they build them different now, yours will come out 2.7m wide, with bow rails stretching this out to 3m. I have oversize permit for mine. Welcome to see mine if it helps your build decisions.

Hi mate yes they do a reverse chine. I had them on my old 660 an just decided  on something  different , my mate had a genesis 7.3 an now a 7.6 dive series with spray rails an it sits really nice so that's the reason  for me to go that way.they do both reverse chine or  spray rails ..it's up to the person...

Just a quick update on this week's progress .Flooring and foam filling currently underway, foam is compliant to commercial/survey vessel aussie standards so more than adequate for the job. Also happy to see the boxes in the transom for the trim tabs to be recessed into - I think this is such an awesome idea!

edit: not sure how to add images other than on the original post?? Pics 6 through to 10 are the updated ones.

foam fill

Sun, 2017-07-16 12:17

this is my second one foam filled. I guess it's just a bit of peace of mind. It provides level flotation which means if the boat gets swamped and totally fills with water it will still float upright and god forbid it flips it will then at least provide something to cling to. an wont go down.  also it quietens  it down alot  ....

Fri, 2017-07-28 19:50

 G'day

Nice boat, all the best with it

Just for clarity, just putting foam in doesn't make a boat float upright, it can but takes sealed up gunnels, not just under the floor, that will just keep water out if there's an opening

Cheers

trailer

Thu, 2017-07-20 19:08

lets just say it was a friday trailer and I truely didnt realise how bad it was until I started looking around at new ones whilst  doing my homework for this boat. It continually crabwalked, wearing the inside of the right rear tyre and heating up the bearings. After much investigation we found the leaf spring on either side were of differing sizes and the axles were 15mm out - absolutley no care had been put into building it that is for sure!  I will not name names but I will not bye 1 of those again. my new  one already looks better  even without wheels haha .....

Shed clearance

Fri, 2017-08-04 12:53

I gather you've checked the height clearance you need for your shed. I brought my Genesis home on the trailer before the hardtop rails and rocket launchers were fitted. Had to drop the rocket launcher down the back edge of the hardtop a bit to get it into my shed (3.4m clearance). I also had to extend my garage a bit because these things end up long on the trailer. Mine shed is 11m long and it just fits

Great lines and extended top

If the Boat is going to weigh greater than 3ton I would go with 300hp. I went trough building a custom sailfish S9, took 18months from time of order. My regrets on build were,

not insulating the kill tanks, going for 2.5 beam and not 2.8, Built in sydney so had to travel and rely on pictures other than that was great fun and I would do it again.

Like your desiion on twin 12" MFD's you wont regret it. Great trailer and fantastic looking build. Enjoy.....

The best thing about the

The best thing about the larger screens is that its a bit easier to see when you are doing km/h (kh) and knots (kn). Even then some folks can still get it wrong!
Great looking boat too by the way, I had one similar (Preston Craft) and loved it - should never have sold it..........

Cheap night vision

Sun, 2017-10-22 19:07

With the dual screens you should be able to port a night vision monocular to the screen. good for night travelling if no radar. I put a post on it some time ago...

Taken delivery

Fri, 2017-11-24 21:01

Yeah mate that was us towing the big girl home the other day.

Still a work in progress as no motor just yet. I am recovering from surgery which has rendered me unseaworthy for a while and cant justify the warranty on one just ticking away with zero hours on it.

Still super happy to finally have it home and in the shed. The genesis guys have done an awesome job and hopefully it will be back in their hands sooner rather than later to get completed.

Comes to mind when I look at your boat, she is certainly a dream come true. Well done may you have a long long life of enjoyment to come.
