old reels and old fishos

was just wondering with all the new reels on the market these days

what would be your favorite from more than 10 years ago , do you still have them and do they still get used

i personally still have a reel i bought 20 years ago and after a service it had not long ago it works as good as the day i got it, cant wait to give it a burl on a big fish

sigma shakespeer 080 series . cost me $100 back then, not cheap when you compare todays value for the dollar

Mine would have to be a 12 T penn had it for years would hate to think how many fish its caught .Will be trolling it for mackies again this year, thanks for reminding me it needs new line ,i am going to get it from the shed now .I think i might get it serviced as well, now you made me feel guilty for neglecting it.

Sweet reel.
heaps more smooth and polished than a 8500SS, simple as, strong. still making them with a different spool i think. this reel has smashed almost every type of fish i have. mainly used it in Exxy, but also accounted for some Dhus and Pinkies at home. Love reels that are sinple, strong, reliable, reasonable. For that reason i run mainly Abu6500C4's, BG60, TLD25, old school Pen overhead, and Spheros 14000.

alvey 600 A5 over 35 years

Sat, 2008-11-15 07:04

alvey 600 A5 over 35 years old and was serviced last year. works great but the ratchet is a bit dodgy. many many fish caught on it. best woulda been a 400lb Cobia on moreton island.

Have 4 x Mitchell 499s and a 489,still use them reasonably regularly
2 X Abu 7000s and a 6500 get a workout every time the boat goes .
An Alvey 6501 deepspool gets a run if I head up to Quobba to stick a balloon out,
2 of the 499 ,the 489 and the Alvey are over 30yrs old and have not given an ounce of trouble in all that time.Just do a bit of a service now and then. They have certainly paid for themselves many many times over with the fish they have brought in

I forked out on this beauty after a small insurance payout in the early 90's. I still have it and it works a treat albeit it need a new bail arm. It's a fantastic unit for some serious beach fishing and has handled some nice fish from the boat. I have semi-retired the reel now and use a Shimano 6500 bait runner.

Daiwa 7000c And GS-2

Sat, 2008-11-15 11:02

both were my Old Mans, and i use and service them reguarly, tho the 7000c is certainly feeling dated now. Built to last tho!

I also use a TLD-15 on my Kayak for a heavy outfit with 10kg line, and its faultless, hardy and reliable. Probably my favourite reel at the moment.

I have an old Shimano overhead that I bought at least

Sat, 2008-11-15 12:53

25 years ago. Not as great as it once was but it has helped me catch some great fish over the years and I will never let it go.
