opinions on a fishwrecked.com record holder board

hi guys

in chatting with adam in regards to improvement ideas, how would you guys feel about having a permanent record holders board?

THIS IS NOT A COMP, nothing to win, it could be your name on the board for many years to come!! thats it.

remembering this is an online thing, it would have to be done on length only with pics submitted to prove the length, similar to the photo comps we have held previously.

this can be for any fish, any where as long as you are a member, you can submit any pics from anyone, but the person submitting the pic is the record holder.

there would be a record board set up and it would be added to/updated as the pics come in, we need to keep it as simple as possible, with only the basic info submitted and only your user name as the record holder.

there can be a pic of the record holder and the catch so there is something visual to see as well, or maybe no pics and just the details on the board????

below is a sample and I would like to get some input from members, it would of course be prettied up to look a lot better, like in a spread sheet or something, but that would need some one with pc skills and thats not me...lol

                        FISHWRECKED.COM  RECORD  HOLDERS

SPECIES               LENGTH                LOCATION               LURE/BAIT           ANGLER             DATE

pink snapper            70cm                Rottnest                    squid                fisho-ron            17/8/2001

samson                   110cm               Jurien Bay                  jig                   Adam Gallash      23/12/2012

squid (hood)             30cm                Cockburn Sound        $2 jig                star304               8/8/2009

this is one i did on the pc, tried to upload it but it went haywire and the top of this post is the result.

it would be nice to get some feed back on this so adam can decide if its worth while or not.

any ideas to add or change will be great, but keep it simple so any dummy can do it.

cheers ron

great mate,

could add another colum in for such a thing!!

but the biggest would still be the record, other wise we could end up with mutilple boards

edit: with some more thought 2 boards would prob be ok...

1 for bait and 1 for lures/jigs/plastics

see what people say??? would be hard to police???

Yes from me! I'd like to see pictures too. I'd like to see photos of fish with the angler and not just fish on a brag mat though. Maybe the photos on the brag mat can be just proof for the admins but the angler has a choice of which photo to be displayed on the site?? Sounds like it could complicate things but yeh i'd rather see the fish with the angler rather than just a whole heap of photos of fish on brag mats.

Good idea

Wed, 2012-10-17 22:43

Good idea ron. I too would like to see a good pic of the fish with the angler. ( It is a public site ) But if angler submited two photos, 1 on a brag mat and 1 with the angler ( like the comps ) and state they would not like their face published , the moderators could verify the capture and post the measured fish picture only.

Awesome idea. To often records books are just books with a bunch of names and numbers. Would be great to have an accompanying pic with them. Funnily i have taken a pic of every worthy fish i have ever caught on a brag mat/ruler as well as a happy snap, just to keep my own records of fish length and weights.

Dont know if this is now throwing to many catagories out there but maybe a Landbased Catagory like in GFAA?

I could content for LB Dhui :)

Thu, 2012-10-18 05:31

Great idea.  What about line weight and / or outfit details (rod, reel) as well as jig / lure / plastic / bait details?

Here's a question for the tech heads (not me), can an input page be established (similar to when you register or change your profile) where people can enter the details in a consistent format.  And the record board page is populated from there, only becoming visible after the size is verified?  Save the administrator having to muck around too much? Perhaps only to verify the size and then 'approve' and upload?

Good thinking Ron.

Simple to start with, we can add a method of capture column to the record holder spreadsheet.

I have changed the fishwrecked competitions image gallery to, fishwrecked competitions - record holders - so please submit any photos there.

We will start a new thread on it and I will place it in the side menus for easy access.

Biggest thing to remember is to get your fish's lengths if you get a monster and want to have your name immortalised. :)

Brag mats shrink in the Pilbara heat.  A 100cm fish on  a brag mat is probably only 96 in reality!

Nickol Bay fishing club has aluminium measuring boards for accuracy.

Might be hard to start it from today, the proof of when it was caught unless dated on the camera will always be a subjective one.  Maybe it just needs a second photo, one on the brag mat and one of the person holding it?

some good ideas fellas.in

Thu, 2012-10-18 18:34

some good ideas fellas.

in regards to the pic,s,

1st pic would have to be of the fish on some sort of measuring device, be it a brag matt or tape measure or what have you, so we can see the lenght you are entering matches the pic.

we are not playing for sheep stations,  so as long as its as close as you can get it would be ok.....if you need to cheat then you have a problem!!

2nd pic would be of the angler holding the catch to go along the record board, if you dont want your mug on the board just submit the 1 pic.

if possible, i think not having to take pics with cards and so on will make it way more easier for the people to play the game,  when the pic is emailed......this can be when all other details are sent along with the pic.

in regards to differant boards for landbased and so on..i think it will be too hard to police...

lets use the mulloway for an example..

landbased guy has his mulla on the board at 90cm, boat guy has his on the board at 99cm,  boat guy gets another mulla at 95cm and submits it as a landbased record and knocks the guy doing the righty off the board, this would work with many other fish as well and could become an issuse.

so i think there should only be one record board and it dosent matter weather you get it boating, landbased, diving, spearing or pinching it of your deckie....biggest is the biggest!!

there are many species the landbased guys can go for that boaters prob wont and vice versa.

i think some added info into the record board will be a good idea, but there has to be a limit that makes it user freindly and not a mission to enter, remembering when you email the pics you need to supply all this info as well.

so we start of with

species

lenght

bait/lure

location

angler(your user name)

date

i think it needs to start from now, but without cards its too hard to police, so some honesty would be needed from members.

again if you want your name up in lights that much and have a old pic on a matt and know all the details the go for it...your special!!

will keep thinking for a bit

cheers

also guys

also guys

because this is a new thing, it would take time to get the board looking good with a few entrys, it will be an ongoing thing and you can submit new entrys when ever, there is no time limits for how long your name stays there, if its a monster it could stay ther forever!!

its probably the wrong time of year to start this with the ban on, but least it gets a chance for alot of other smaller species up on the board with everyone targeting other fish.

sambos could of been up today for sure.

cheers

ok guys

there was many good ideas, but to keep it as simple as possible it has been made with the basics.

after all it is about the biggest fish only, all other info is just to make it look better, so no matter how, where and what it was caught with biggest is the biggest!!

we are not playing for sheep stations  after all and it just gives F/W something else other sites do not have and something more members can contribute to,

with your name and pic up in lights for years to come as a all time record holder.

but most important is.... for the fun of it

 Length only mate, fish

Sun, 2012-10-21 18:02

Length only mate, fish filled with sinkers don't count.

only my opinion but I don't think the spearing brigade should be able to post records against line fishermen. Line fisherman don't usually get to pick & choose their targets by sight & I reckon that gives the spears a massive advantage on most species. Give the straight hooks their own board if possible but keep it totally separate from line captures.

Cant wait for the weekend, I'll be out there chasing the flatly record & come next winter I'll be gunning for a tailor or two.

Sun, 2012-10-21 19:28

Good work Ron.

Just think it should be made a fork length measurement as some are pretty good at straightning tails out etc.

Will make it a consistent mearsurement as well not relying on how you lay the fish on the ruler.

No Fork

Sun, 2012-10-21 21:14

Yep fish like Dhu or Barra like in the pic above dont have a forked tail so its just measured normally.

Dont think it will confuse anyone and it will save heaps of issues later as total length is very subjective.

Agree need to make a decision now before it really gets going.

Decision

Mon, 2012-10-22 13:37

Any final decisions will be made by Ron and myself in consultation to determine the leader, if Ron is the involved party then I will make that decision with a moderator.  All suspect measurements of stretched tails will then go back to a countback situation of the fork length if distinguishable, if not distinguishable, then the fork length fish will take the lead.  It's all a bit subjective, when we get to that bridge we will deal with it more in depth.

Not wanting to sound too anal & I dont expect to have my name on it any time soon but.......

...... you may want to check the way the word species & speices are spelt or spelled.

There could be a problem with length & lenght as well.

Tue, 2012-10-23 17:05

No sizes. What's going to happen there? Does a smaller fish that's got the measure in the photo get the nod over one that's obviously bigger but has no measure? Or do we estimate the size of those fish (No offence but I'm not just going to take someones word for how big they are) & wait until someone can knock them off? I don't think either solution is fair to one side or the other. If there's no measure I don't think they should be up there, period.

Congrats to the guys that got those fish though. All top catches.

You send in two photos if you want, one for proof of measurement and one to be displayed on the site, if thats what you want. I'm sure admin has sighted the photos of the fish on a brag mat before adding them to the thread

An entry won't be counted as valid unless we can see two versions of proof showing how big the fish is (one holding, one on brag mat).  We can then compare it to the other photo of the current leader and see if it beats it.  This will also eliminate a lot of older entries as most people just go the grab shot but don't get a measure shot.  Remember its not sheep stations, just for fun and a bit of bragging rights.

Fair enough if the size has been confirmed by you guys. Might be a good idea to include the size in the caption for each photo as well as the record board. Easier to see than having to move up & down the page to match a size to a fish. It's not bad now but I reckon it'll become a bit of a hassle as more species get added.

yes mate all entrys so far have included the fish on a measruring device, if the pic is not sent with it on a measuring device of some sort it will not be entered.

i can add the size no probs if you think it helps.
