Painting aluminum window frames
Submitted by wayneleech on Sat, 2011-03-12 20:36
hi all,
We're doing a few renos on our house and we want to change the colour of our window frames. I was going to paint them though because they are aluminum frames I’m reluctant to do so. I suspect the paint will peal and flake off...
Is there anyone here in the window business? Are their professionals out there that specialise in re-painting ali frames or should we look at getting the frames replaced?
If we replace the frames does anyone know if we can reuse the existing glass?
cheers

you can paint the frames.
you can paint the frames. slightly roughen up the surface , put on an undercoat and paint with enamel paint.best result with enamel paint is when it is warm, so just leave it out in the sum for a while before you use it and then you will end up with a much smoother finnish or you can spray it on

Painting ali
You should be able to paint the frames if you use something to take the smooth surface off the ali. The pro fishermen use ALIBRITE to clean ali boats, I suspect its an acid that just removes the top surface. Once that is removed the paint should stick the same as the chocolate coloured ali frames compared to the anodised ones

I am thinking about doing the same thing. There is a company called "The Manor Group" that do it. I was going to give them a call to get a quote but haven't got around to doing it yet. I'm sure there are other companies that do it though. Good Luck and let us know how you go.

Ali Frames
You made mention the frames were aluminium frames so I take it they are not painted, anodised maybe?. If this is the case then you will have to use an ETCH primer as well as giving he frames a very light sand then taking advantage of the suns warmth paint them. They may be the type of frame that allows the sash and fixed panes to be removed which will make the task a lot easier.
Good luck.

Frames
Ali commercial and residential frames are powdercoated, and you can paint them, but it never lasts long. The paint doesnt adhere to a powdercoated surface. Your best bet is to do what holth did, and get someone to come through and retro-fit new frames. Painting them looks like crap.

Painting a pain in the ass.
Painting a pain in the ass. We have an old house and replaced them all looks a million bucks. Company in Malga can't remember the name but a very competitive price.
