Wow is right...

Thu, 2014-11-20 20:10

...as in the mechanic saying "WOW, now I can put another coat of wax on the Ferrari!"

Ok, can-of-worms time. People like to come on here and mouth off about etecs but one clear advantage is no servicing required for 300 hours and, contrary to popular belief, that initial service is no dearer than any other motor. So by selecting any other outboard, the consumer is literally thousands of dollars down before even getting the prop wet.

Let the fireworks begin!

what size motor what he service.  new water pump impeelar new leg oils new fuel filters.  power steering fluid etc etc.  I have a 250 verado and my 100 hr service was about that a little more. included those items and also 3 hrs fault finding mission for an intermitent alarmthrottle sensor.

its a 4 stroke 80hp Yamaha and didn't need any fault finding done on it, I would do the service myself but it is still under warranty

At a guess without parts that equates to mybe 6hrs labour

Thu, 2014-11-20 21:25

Not knowing what parts (if any) were used that seems to be quite a bit over the top for a first service.

I was quite annoyed some time back about the amount I was being charged for servicing my 115 Yamaha 4 stroke. So I said to myself lets get a workshop manual and just see how hard it is to service this thing. I brought a Seloc manual of eBay for something like $20.00 aud and took it really slow doing the work for the first couple of times, now I think I have saved a heap and if anything goes wrong (which it hasn't touch wood) the only person to blame is myself and I feel a whole lot better about the service the motor has got.
It is not that hard the hardest part and the biggest learning curve was the electronic side of things.

Fri, 2014-11-21 05:48

Just cost me 2500 for a 100 hour service on a couple of 350 yamaha. One impeller bowl replaced was the only thing out of the norm.

$250 for 16 spark plugs.

Struth, I don't know how they justify the costs. I had my ute serviced yesterday. Everything you would expect done, plus a brake fluid change, tyres rotated and balanced and synthetic engine oil for $440.00. Go figure.

Yamaha service

Sat, 2014-11-22 07:14

i think log book services by dealers are a fixed price set by yamaha as I was told what the cost would be before I even dropped the boat off. Don't know if an hourly rate comes into it.

Mine's usually $500-$600 The guys I go to give the whole boat a once over and change filters, oils and impellor also minor tweaks to the trailer. I reckon a fair deal as they are running a business they are providing you a service as well. Good dte blokes not like those up Waneroo rd way.

Ask for an itemized bill.

Sat, 2014-11-29 20:51

Ask for an itemized bill with your service. All parts used and all things checked  or adjusted.  If they wont do that  I would go somewhwere else.  At least  that way you know what they have actually done and if they have charged you fairly for parts used.  Its pretty easy to find the price of parts if you have the number. Ask for your old water pump impeller back  and old spark plugs  and any other parts replaced.  That way you are pretty sure they replaced them.  One thing that costs lots that you dont think of is fuel filters. Racor seperator around $70 and one in motor around $30.
