Purely from past personal
Purely from past personal experience it was the aerial and connections that died. Replaced aerial and all was good again. ( I was prepared to replace radio if need be.)7
ROUGH RED
One day I hope to replace the boat picture I am using with one of a decent fish...One day...

Yep had a similar problem on my tub. Replaced the aerial and now works like a dream. Easy to install as well.

Logging Off
Does pay to have a phone contact if your in range or back-up radio if possible. This just reminded me to go over all my electrical and aerial connections when I get home. Read a while back that sea rescue protocol is: Sea rescue tries to make contact with you from the ETR when logging on (or up-dated ETR), every 10 minutes for half an hour, then hand over to the water police, for divers its after the first attempt of contact then handed over to water police.

Similar VHF Problem -How do you test cheaply
I have a similar problem.
Happened on Sunday last week - Could transmit but not receive. Did a log in in the morning with Mandurah no probs but sound seemed a bit low. Later in the arvo the Sea Search could receive my VHF transmissions/calls but I could not receive theirs. Throughout the day I realised I was receiving no VHF traffic??
I have a GX548 VHF Radio and fixed antenna on my boat. Any thoughts - do you think it is the antenna. If so Anyway to cheaply test the antenna without replacing??

Trueblue - if they can hear you
It sure as hell isn't the antenna - something electronic on the receive (RX) side of the unit - the TX is working perfectly from what you have said

microphone?
Could be the handpiece, remembering back to my old CB days.
Easy to check if you can borrow someone elses handpiece.
