Recommend me a cheap rod and reel (for boat snapper & the likes)

Have been fishing casually and boating pretty much 30 years, but  have never caught anything serious.  Well I have caught some Sambos on a charter, and have hooked a tuna whilst coming home from Rotto, but that's about it.

I want to get a new combo with a very low budget that can motivate me to target snapper/dhu around the Sound or 5 fathom.

What is the absolute minimum (new or used) I should be looking at?  What models and line weight?  I want spinning as I have a couple overheads already.

$99 on special at moment

Tue, 2013-06-18 21:10

BCF stores have a catoluge sale of the Penn650 or 750 or 850 or 950ssm and a marina rod to suit for $99 !

Load it up with 20-30lb braid or mono and bobs your uncle ............. I would put mono on it (perhaps low stretch), easier knot tieing etc.

That must be the best value set up gong eh?

Good luck, drop a post when you get it sorted.

Agree

I agree with petermac, the end of financial year sales are about to kick off, look for up to 50% of sales at local tackle shops. This is the time of year i stock up on hooks , swivells etc . Plus the good cheap combo you cant pass up .

As for a boat combo , i would go a 6500 Fin nor Off Shore ( usualy $150 ) and 10 kg Ugly stick or simular Pen rod. Load it up with 30lb braid and you will catch just about anything .

Put a Penfisher in your hand next to a Fin Nor ( same price ) And tell me which one you would buy ? For me there is no question the Fin Nor would be boxed up and on the way home in a second .

 Wow great help here. Thanks

Wow great help here. Thanks all. It does look like the penn spinfisher and mariner rod is value buy. I am guessing the 750 size for 30lb braid? Only thing about the penn is I reckon they are ugly as! They look very outdated. If there is a shimano equivalent for about the same $$ please let me know.

Oceanside, I would really love to support the smaller shops. Do you have the same as bcf's offering? I'm prepared to drive much further to shop with you guys

I don't understand why

Thu, 2013-06-20 09:57

I don't understand why everyone is recommending 10-15kg rods with 30lb braid....  such massive overkill!!!  you don't need to skull drag the fish out!  How many 20-30lb snapper have you all caught?

seriously, get a lighter outfit with a 4-5000 size spinning reel.  then you can use plastics, baits, heck, what ever you want!!!  and you will actually have fun ANGLING the fish rather than ripping it up from the dark depths with a winch...

MOTackle have catana combo's

Thu, 2013-06-20 10:02

MOTackle have catana combo's for $99 at the moment.  That's for the Sienna 4000 reel and a catana CAT602 spin outfit...  i'm sure one of the local shops could do the same thing...  I've had my catana combo for 2 years now and it's been drenched in salt water, pulled up sambo's (not massive, but still hard running), small sharks, rays, tailor, pinkies, baldies and dhu's...  Until i got my stradic it was my go to outfit for a lot of my fishing.  if I wasn't using that, i'd even go down to my whiting combo.

fishing is more fun when the fish give you a fight.  that's why anglers chase fish like sambo's, AJ's, Marlin etc.

what ever you decide on, good luck to you, and enjoy getting out there on the water!

 damn Justo82 - I think you

Thu, 2013-06-20 13:39

damn Justo82 - I think you have a point.  So, now I ended up spending TWICE as much and getting the Penn 850 with a short Mariner rod, and a Shimano Sedona 4000 with a Sonic Pro 732 Snapper which would probably get more used.  So I guess now I need to decide what lb braid to put on them?  I'm thinking 30lb on the Penn as a skull dragger and 10lb on the Sedona?

 I'd go 15lb on the 4000

Thu, 2013-06-20 16:26

I'd go 15lb on the 4000 reel.  And 30lb on the other sounds pretty good. Get some good flouro leader as well.
