Restricted Coxswains?
Submitted by Versus on Mon, 2014-06-16 21:28
Gday all,
interested in doing Restricted Coxswains (aka grade 2). Challenger TAFE doesn't even run the course as far as I can tell, and Perth Boat School (formerly Swan Maritime?) don't have anything till after July (was hoping to do during July...). Just wondering if anyone knows somewhere else that does it as this is all i can find on google, in perth anyway.

isnt Swan Maritime now
isnt Swan Maritime now Australasian Maritime Institute?
Might be a silly question but why not do an unrestricted?

Sea Time
Correct me if I'm wrong but I think you need 3 months sea time to do the coxswains and none for the restricted ticket.
Check up and see if you can do it by correspondence so that all you have to do is sit the exams to finalize it

Id say your right, but even
Id say your right, but even with the restricted you wouldnt be able to use it to get unrestricted as the inland seatime likely doesnt count?

Restricted
Think the restricted coxswain allows you to go up to 5nm offshore and no bigger than 7 metres in length.
Coxswain is 15nm from nearest land and up to 39 foot boat if I remember correctly

I think its 15 from a port
I think its 15 from a port but not certain-very little navigation training is involved if my memory serves me?
But still, if thats the case you could acquire seatime toward unrestricted with a Restricted one Im guessing.
At one time there was a general exemption for Coxswains at the Abrolhos as its 31nm from Gtn to nearest sthn group.

lol.
From perthboatschool.com.au
Everyone who skippers a vessel for commercial purposes needs commercial qualifications. This includes Environmental workers, research scientists, even Monitoring staff in a dinghy checking a drain, Main Roads workers in their barge working in a creek under a bridge or doing jetty work or any commercial work carried out in a boat. More info can be found on AMSA site.
Coxswains Grade 2 may command a Class 2,3 or Survey Exempt vessel of less than 12 meters in length, less than 3 nautical miles from the ‘shore’ without passengers. ("without passengers" - means paying passengers, so you can carry people on board if they are all "crew".). Also you dont need to be 3nm from Mainland - it can be 3nm from a mother ship, from protected waters, or from point of departure. The WA Coxswains Restricted "course" is a small part of the full Coxswains course, it is 3 of the 14 units that used to make up the full 'unrestricted' Coxswain, so it is a start at the bottom of the ladder of commercial qualifications. You also need a little sea time to get any commercial qualification now, and this varies, so check with AMSA paperwork (see Download links above). At the time of writing this - you could do 60 days Recreational 'sea time' and that was sufficient for the Coxswain Grade 2 (ie the replacement for the old Coxswains Restricted qualification). You will also need to do some basic engineering, as well as pass an easy written test at Dept of Transport offices.

Years ago I did my unrestricted (12 mths sea time) by correspondence through challenger tafe. I think I needed to do a final assessment including colour blindness, with what was then DoT.

Colour blindness
You can still get a commercial ticket if you are colour blind, it will stipulate that it is daylight hours only stamped in your book. One of the chaps who did his ticket when I did mine found out the hard way, did his colour blindness test when we only had days left to complete the course.

Sea time can be done on a recreational vessel nowadays, there is size restrictions, speak to DPI. Challenger should still offer courses. Yachting wa might also be able to help out, they were looking at getting in their scope of training Dont know if they did

commercial qual=commercial sea time
but you can do 60 days sea time on rec boat, but if it is outboard powered you will only get outboard powered certification. and it is 15Nm from the nearest land mass.
