Rookie mistake, left the muffs on!

So, took the boat out this afternoon.

All going well, motor running fine; water stream coming out. Went at about 15 knots for about 10 minutes. Put boat in idle and suddenly alarm started sounding. After a minute it stopped. Not sure what the alarm was; so decided to head back to the ramp slowly. Engine seemed to lack power, then suddenly kicked back in again as normal.

I gave it a few mins and then stopped again. Once again alarm sounded so I headed back in slowly at 10-12 knots. No smoke or strange noises or smells.

When I got to the ramp I found that I had somehow left the muffs on!!! (what a pratt). So I had probably run for around 20-30 mins in total with muffs on. Between 8-15 knots.

Got home and let it cool for an hour, then hooked up the muffs and ran it at idle for 10 minutes. Water always coming out and it was not hot.

Could I have potentially done some damage? What should I check before heading out again?

Youve probably done no damage but i would do a few checks.

My mate did a run from peron to rotto with the muffs on and did no damage unbelievably.

As above check impella and check the waterpump housing hasnt distorted  or melted with the heat.is If it's s four stroke check the oil next few trips for any signs of water and pull the plugs also to check it's not burning any water.

I reckon it will be ok

I've done it too...

My motor was less than 20hrs old!

Chugged all the way to straggler without a drama in choppy conditions, weather was better for the return, opened it up and immediately got a high temp alarm in seconds. I felt pig sick!

No damage done, the alarm kicked in way before the motor would/could cook. I dropped the leg and checked the impeller but that was all fine too. I think because it was getting some water it avoided a lot of potential damage. No issues 250hrs later.

Muffs should be painted a bright colour, not black! I keep thinking i should tie a red ribbon or something to them... Still, you'll never do it again!

I've also launched the boat without putting the plug in, thats an exercise you'll only do once also!

Just about to launch my boat

Sun, 2019-11-17 19:12

I raised the motor up to clear the ramp and guess what was sitting on the water intakes of the motor, the muffs, so close to launching with them on one close call.
I have heard of a few people leaving them on and having over heating alarms going off but no long term damage being done.

I have 4 laminated checkists. I have added a muff check before leaving home!!

1. b4 leaving home

2. before launch

3. retrieving boat

4. returning home

The quintrex has level floatation, that means it doesn't need the bungs in right?

My classic

though not an emergency. Headed to West reef of dampier for a bottom bash. It is a few NM out. Got there and forgot all the bait.

Deckie was ropeable as she doesnt use Artificials. But a squid jig or 3, and some plastics soon had it under control. Phew.

Could have ended as Noah bait!!
