There have been too many incidents like this in the last couple of months. People need to take better care when out on the ocean

Not sure what happened
Not sure if they hit something or structural failure. After we received the call from the wife we activated our Radio direction finder in our ops centre at Ocean Reef that can pick up Epirbs and had a strong signal indicating they were not far from Ocean Reef marina. We also had a direction so we had a reasonable idea where they were.
They had not looged on. Our boat was able to speak to him so he could direct them to their location. We also used the FLIR camara on the boat to assist locating them in the dark.
From the time we got the call to picking them up was approx 35 minutes.

Great effort
Great effort again by the sea rescue guys. Good to hear all involved got back home safely to their families. So important for all us boaties to support our local sea rescue.

Well done
All boaties appreciate what service you guys/ladies provide for us recreational boaties, without your dedication and service we would be a poorer society with I fear there would be quite a few fatalities on the water.

Log on
Good job, well done.
Our job would be a lot easier if all boaties logged on and gave regular updates on when they change locations so if something does go wrong we can have some sort of an idea where they are. We don't want 100 metre positions [we have plenty of spots of our own] but within a 1nm radius would save many valuable minutes of searching time.

when you say updates do you
when you say updates do you mean gps co-ords? always wondered how i could explain a spot 20 mile out to sea especially north or south of marina

Rough location
If when you logged on and gave your destination as 20nm from Two Rocks on 240deg, putting you somewhere on top of Direction Bank just add that you have moved 3nm south of your previous location and so on if you move again, that way it gives us your last known position and if a search is going to start that will be its starting point not the original location given when you logged on.

Gps
If you want to give more detail give you gps co ordinates but leave off the last 2 or 3 digits.
Here in Carnarvon they give known locations like east of The Gap, west of the Gap [outside the middle of Bernier and Dorre islands, Koks Island,[north end of Bernier island], Cape St Crique [south end of Dorre Island], the Muck/ Shit hole, [4nm east of Red Cliff bay] and so on.
All are marked on the chart and it gives a starting point but it gives you an idea on what info you need to provide remembering its your and your crews necks that could be at risk if something goes wrong.
