Definitely a scam.  I got something similair a few years ago when I was selling my tinny.  Thought it strange that someone in England wanted to buy my 4.2 m tinny and ship it all the way overseas???

Scam report it

Tue, 2014-11-04 20:21

To gumtree. They just want your details and will set up new accounts in your name. He has your address, email, bank details.

If it sounds to good to be true it is. Def report it. You'll find they aren't in aus

Same response I had with a AU falcon just a few weeks ago. It's an identity fraud racket

Bloody hell I have had so many text messages.

Tue, 2014-11-04 21:13

They only got my email, before I saw it was obviously a scam. I quess I can expect more of the same when I put my boat up. Looking at getting a fifth wheeler caravan and becoming an even greyer nomad.

 It starts like that, then

Wed, 2014-11-05 08:30

It starts like that, then they casually mention they will be giving you extra to cover some kind of expense that requires you to forward money somewhere else.

I copied the below from the paypal scampage, which highlights some other common internet scams.

www.paypal.com/webapps/mpp/brc/avoid-popular-scams

What happens?

You receive an order and your customer sends you a PayPal payment or check that is more than the purchase price and then asks you to wire them the difference. They may tell you that they accidentally overpaid you, the extra money is for the shipping costs, they're giving you a bonus for your great service, or the money is for the stress they've caused you. They may even ask you to wire the shipping fees to their shipper.

Real reason they overpaid you

This scammer may have used a stolen credit card, bank account number, or checking account to pay you. Just because a payment has been deposited into your account, doesn't mean the money is yours to keep. If the legitimate account holder reports unauthorized activity, the money can be withdrawn from your account. If that happens, you'll lose the money you wired to the fraudster, the product you shipped, shipping costs, and your payment.

How to avoid this scam

  1. Don't wire money to someone you don't know. A legitimate buyer won't overpay you for an order.
  2. If a customer overpays you and asks you to wire them the difference, consider canceling the order - it's very likely to be fraudulent.
  3. Don't wire money to the bogus shipping company – it's part of their scam to get your money.

Nailed it....

Wed, 2014-11-05 11:07

I reckon the girl that tried giving her library card number, and then her blood BANK card number last week absolutely nailed it.  Kept the scammer going for quite a while before he realised someone was taking the piss out of him.
