Shark bay Boat fishing
Submitted by crasny1 on Thu, 2015-08-27 11:19
Hi all
Heading to Shark bay/Denham and despite having fished up and down the coast in a boat all the way up to Broome never hit these waters. Will be Denham side. RandallDF has already given me a general pointer mostly Monkey Mia and squid sites but if anyone is willing to give some broad heading, direction to some ground.
Not realy fussed with freezer filling as we eat the YF whiting up there in preference. Just out for a little R&R and C&R fun, and if we get a good tably all the better.
Boat is a Traily 5.4 with 120l so could head to steep side if the weather permits.
Cheers
Neels

The trolling along the sw
The trolling along the sw corner of DHI is also excellent. Pick you day and the trip across can be about an hour... or three hours and uncomfortable on a crappy day...
Head out of the passage (pick the deepest part of the channel) and then turn right. Troll along the 20 m line if the swell will allow. If the swell is up you wont get that close. We've gone north for a few miles, but always seem to get hit most either side of black rock (a headland that juts out just past the end of the first beach).

Keep the whiting heads for
Keep the whiting heads for bait & if you get a chance to rip over to steep, fish the fault line. (a line between the point & the southern end of DHI that will show up on your sounder). North of Monkey Rock...
Try to get the incoming tide but when it is done head back to Denham before the outgoing tide starts to pick up pace. This just makes for an easier return especially if a East or South East wind picks up.
Good luck & enjoy the trip.

mate forget the bent pin,
mate forget the bent pin, only ever caught a couple of good snapper here, fed plenty of undersize fish though. Don't be afraid to fish shallow water, you will be surprised at how good the fishing can be. I have fished Steep and both bays, the wind will really determine if you are fishing Denham or Monkey Mia. Finding ground is pretty difficult, there are a few spots over near useless loop and in the South Passage that you can fill your esky pretty quickly. Faure Island on Monkey Mia side has some great fishing. Not going to tell you exact spots but will say again look for the right ground.

Spot on clogwog
The best fish I have caught around sharkbay are in less than 10meters of water.

Blue bone in the shallows
Any of the shallows that have rock in them you can find BLue Bone and Black Snapper. Try both western and eastern shore of Peron point and also a place called snapper flats approx 5k west of the Monkey Mia boat ramp you will see other boats there. Gees I love that place

Tah Guys
As usual any info appreciated. For eating up there I would just chase YFW. And I know how to do that shore based at a few locations, including in town itself. That will be the plate target as both of us love whiting.
The rest will be fun, and if we happen to score a size snap etc OK, but no brooms are coming up other than a couple off trolling outfits. Going to fish light and fly from the boat with snapper the target on fly. Also squid but I have a rough idea where to get them, and then use the tentacles as bait for the whiting.
Whether we get a size fish or not isnt realy an issue for us because undersize snaps etc on light tackle is as much fun as bream. And into C&R anyway, not freezer fillers.
Cheers

You boys are right the other
You boys are right the other west.... I meant east. But definatetly check the shallow water for bluebone. My 17 year old was hooking them then getting me to hold the rod while he went in and pulled them out from under the rocks. Great laugh when the little lemon sharks turn up.

Shark bay
Currently fishing at Shark Bay. Found a great spot thanks to the local professionals. Try fishing the 70 m contour line straight out of Steep point. Its only choppy for a few km thanks to the rebound of the swell.

Cheers Guys
Times getting closer and also stopping off in Kalbarri for 3 days on the way up.
Should be a blast. In Kalbarri might just target bream and soapies upriver, and maybe some crabs.
