Squeeky car brake help
Submitted by mako magic on Wed, 2009-06-03 13:15
Not too long ago i changed the brake pads all round on my patrol, but not long after i changed them they started getting a little squeeky, and its hugely annoying and embarrasing, does any body have any idea's on trying to make the noise stop at all? besides not using brakes at all

Have you checked your brake fluid
There may also be dust on the pads.

The squeek is usually caused
The squeek is usually caused by wear on the disc, usually the center is worn but the edge is not. Machining the disc when changing pads will take care of the problem.
For a quick fix, say if selling the car, pull the pads and put shoe polish on them. this is a short term fix.

Copperslip mate....
It is a copper compound grease that soaks into the pad and lubricates the disk - be careful not to apply too much - take a 1/2 teaspoonful on the end of your finger and smear a line from the inner hub to the outer edge across both sides of your disc. Taking the wheel off makes it easier, but if you have mags you will be able to do the outer disc fairly easily.
Warning - Do 1 wheel at a time and then ride it till it is hot, to soak into the pad - your braking on that wheel will be poor for the first few pumps, so don't hoon around while your heating it up - also don't burn your fingers off when doing the second wheel - the disc will be very hot. Just be sensible when doing this - maybe leave it a day between front and rear application, starting with the noisiest wheel.....
The problem is that the pads in are too hard - will last long, but less efficient....
Get the grease from a autoshop or tool sales place..

Squeeling brakes
I agree with Davebarry most likely cause is you got hard pads. I disagree with putting anything on them to make them quiet, as it can be very dangerous. Best solution is to remove your brake pads again and get a hacksaw and cut some criss cross grooves in them (Making diamond patterns) about 3mm deep. This will get rid of your noise. I am qualified mechanic and have encountered this numerous times.

Patrols are noisy
we have 4 here at work - all have periods of squeaks - paticulary when muddy - and the gearboxes are quite noisy - but good reliable vehicles.

BENDIX
Always machine the rotors and use bendix brake pads and you should be good. I would be very reluctant to put any chemicals or groove the pads as this will cause problems and you wont get the the best braking possible out of the patrol. No short cuts with brakes!

Getting all my brakes done
Getting all my brakes done soon when I get new tyres all the way round on my Outback. Probably get my mobile mechanic to do it as he's the best Suburu mechanic around, used to be a mechanic for the Subaru World Rally Team so he has a fair idea what's going on with them.
Cheers
