somone else had the esmeraldas for sale would be a good start for you and being the high speed version you could use it for other smaller species as well start off right
You getting trendy Peter , I would've picked you as being ole school I just use a handline still myself lol .. mind you if I did have a dedicated stick for squid I'd use a telescopic jobby so I didn't waste a rodholder lol .. what is a EGI rod anyway ?
Roger that .. forgot you had a crook hand .. personally I'd just use a telescopic rod with any old small reel or my whiting rod . EGI is I think a marketing term for dedicated squid rods they get fairly exy for what they are . I'm not a full bottle on them , plenty are though and I'm sure you'll be advised accordingly .
Yeh i dont undertsnad the hype over egi rods but i am sure they are great ?A lot more useful from shore i imagine.Ive used handline for the last 20 yrs haha
Anyway i use my old breaming combo for squid now( Loomis and sustain)
are great , they load right up without pulling the hooks(so to speak) and have plenty of give. put an al-cheapo reel like a siena 2500 on with 10lb braid, back the drag right off and happy days.
I always use about 1.5m mono leader cause as they say the squid have good eyesight.
Look at the shimano sephia squiding rods around $90 paired with a small shimano eg stradic or similar in 1000 size should be a good starter combo not cheap cheap but wont break the first time you use it.
Also you can get a rovex combo for a round $80 as a combo that is a dedicated squidding outfit look pretty good from what ive seen and a few people ive seen using them have landed some decent squid on them.
Also id be using at least 10lb to 15lb incase the old cuttle fish comes along.
7' graphite rod 2-4kg with a resonably fast action, most brands will have one- anywhere from $50 into the hundreds. The guys at your local should be able to find one in your budget. Match with a 2- 2500 reel, pflugger have some decent reels in the early hundred mark, or Abu would be great. At least 10lb braid, fluoro leader. Will also be great for whiting, bream etc.
Shimano Sepia rod......really disappointed. Braid gets hooked up way too often on top guide (tip) and have to unwrap it by hand. Waste of coin in my view.

Get a Ugly Stick TackleRatz ( kids rod ) relpace the kids reel with somethng like a Shimano Sienna and you will have yourself an excelent squidding combo.

My understanding is that
My understanding is that 'egi' means 'wooden jig' in Japanese. I'm not Japanese so someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

I was out there today
I was out there today catching squid,I drifted over the weed banks with two handlines and one rod out.
All the squid today were caught on the handlines-so I'm also tending towards the handlines.

yeah squid rods are another wanky thing that sucks in people with too much money, a simple handline or cheap spinning outfit will do the job.

I bought
Shimano Sepia rod......really disappointed. Braid gets hooked up way too often on top guide (tip) and have to unwrap it by hand. Waste of coin in my view.
