Steep point reds out wide
Submitted by Stimmsy on Wed, 2013-07-10 15:20
Hi Gents,
Heading up to steep point for a 9 dayer at the end of august, taking the 5.4 runabout, had heaps of success in past trips in close to the west cliffs of dirky and the fault line but looking to go out wide this year a couple of times.
Any idea of what depth of water to fish for reds and other species as snapper baldies and macky seems to be the only thing in the engel for the trip home.....not that it is a bad thing
Cheers,
Stu

Broken ground. There weren't even any rises on the sounder but you could see the ground change from sand to flat coral

Good luck mate. If all else fails we caught quite a few mackies to 30kg and a bunch of cobia along the cliffs of Dirk

Reds
Hi Stimmsy, mate when we are chasing the reds we hit the 70metre contour line and follow it slowly (have lures out the back - more fun i reckon). Searching for a bombie or significant structure at this depth is a bloody nightmare. We catch all our reds on large plateaus where the 'structure' is only 1-2 meters different from the normal bottom. For what its worth il give you my 2 cents on locating this ground. I crank the sounders zoom right back to enable you to gauge what the ground is doing over a distance. Having the sounder zoomed in off its face will trick you into thinking you have found mt kosiosko, when its usually the boat rising on a swell at the same time the bottom drops half a meter. Even worse when your crew are all staring at the bloody screen and you end up taking turns at fishing 'sand dunes' till everyone has had their 'quick mark that! moment'
Following the contour lines and watching the sounder you will come accross patches where the ground will rise up from say 68m to 72m over a fairly large distance (300m +) track back accross your line till you work out the extent of the 'lump'. This will seem a little strange as its usually a fair bloody distance from one side of it to another. Once you have worked out the basic layout of the thing, crank the sounder zoom in again and work out which way the current is going. Because in this depth you are likely to pick up rosy snapper and schooling reds such as robinson bream, saddle tails it is important to work out where they are hanging off the plateau. We do this cause even though you might be picking up the target fish hanging in that bees dic# ledge, if you line your drift up to incorporate the other fish schooling up on the leeward side the catch rate is far better.
Hope this helps mate.

Great Advice, Furious! Now I just need to convince the usual skipper to try something he hasnt before, that is going to be the hard part.
