Where have all the fish gone?...

 Hi All

Just joined and hope to learn a few tricks.

bought a Baron Sportsman about 6 months ago, and refitted it with a Suzuki DF140. Have been out with it almost every second week, but you think I was able to catch any thing other than a dozen Wrass.

My deckie was given a list of co ordinates that encompassed the 5 fathom bank, Carnac, GI, west, south and se of Rotto. We must have fished at about 20 of the 35 given, and the only area we got any fish was on the 5 fathom bank WRASS and WRASS. We have used squid, ockki and mulies on our trips as bait.

Frustrated I have not gone out with the boat for 5 weeks now. Would appreciate any pointers as to how to catch a descent feed, squid or any thing else but Wrass.

cheers

It is likely that the places

It is likely that the places you are fishing dont hold fish, keep looking for other locations, use your sounder to find the fish then drop your baits down. Many fish the sound for snapper this time of year. Other boats will indicate what areas produce fish. Maybe try there.

Its not easy to catch fish regularly in inshore locations like Perth, you have to do the time, and learn what you need to learn... then the results will come. That whats makes it all the more rewarding. Going out once every second week is not the way to learn quickly... I would be going out every day for a week in locations I know produce fish for others..eg cockburn sound. After a week you should have some squidding locations sussed drifting over weed beds, caught some herring and whiting  and at least seen or heard others catching a few snapper and maybe even got lucky yourself .... that is how fishing is.

Having travelled most of OZ fishing myself, I have had to do this many times. nothing is for free, put in the time on the water.... if you know someone who catches fish regularly see if you can go out with them to get some pointers.

A a teenager I spent many hours chasing the "secrets" of fishing , the thing is there wasnt any. You just need to learn what you need to lear,n to catch fish regularly.  Then it gets easy, others will be asking you how you do it. Stick at it mate !! I will be going through the same learning curves again when I get all "boated up" again in the coming year. This website has lots of advice as well that will speed up the learning curve. !

Thanks for the sound advise. I guess I just have to stick with it to get the results.

I would love to go out every day, but work commitments hampers it. However I will definitely be Putting the hours at every opportunity I get

Follow the lines of pro's cray pots and when you find a spot with 3-4 pots with in 20m there's a very good chance that there is a very nice coral lump or ledge there

When you go to the marks how do you fish them? Straight onto it or sound around & if so how far out do you sound around the mark?

 Hi Lamby

I move over the spot, the scout around it in a 1nm radius and if there is any activity and depending on the wind and swell, I position at the top of the circle and drift over the spot, using a combination of occy and mulies.

 Hi vinesh87

Well the co ordinates were given by a ex cray boat operater. How good they are he didn't say except that he has fished them a few years ago and always came back with a feed. Did not mention any special way to fish other than bottom bouncing.

cheers

Mon, 2013-07-15 21:35

It took me almost a year to get my first size dhu after buying my boat, and a further year before I regularly caught the target species I was after. I still have the odd fishless day, but also have the odd day where I catch a few.

Put the time in, and perfect your sounder.

 Hi Pale Ale

I use a navionics platinum plus card in my Lowrance HDS Gen2 and took for granted that the datum would be preset. Could you advise me what the datum should be?

Cheers

Learning

Target a particular species. Generally everyone want Dhuies and Snapper. If these are your only target species then it will probably be a long time between meals and plenty of boring fishless days out on the water. if this is what you want then keep at it and eventually you will get one but if you want a feed of fantastic eating fish that are super easy to catch, go out and target big sand Whiting and King George Whiting.

Freedivaspida has the right idea for these as well. we bagged out in no time at all last year drifting along beside cray pots in Cockburn Sound behind naval base. once we got onto a couple of whiting we dropped the pick and we were into it.

If this sounds like what you might like then: liberal use of berley, long shanked hook, 750mm leader, swivel and appropriate (as light as possible) ball sinker. Squid for bait (fresh is best - catch your own if possible) and prawns work well too. Don't over do the bait with prawn as they will pick it off too easliy and make sure you peel it. Squid stays on better but if it is not fresh you are better using prawn.

After you have your feed you can go and get bored silly chasing dhuies, or you can drift over the ribbon weed beds and score squid enough to eat and use as bait tomorrow. use the little whiting on a spike and the squid will be lining up to get on ya boat.

Hope it helps. If it's any consolation, we never have returned without fish. if you want a spot or two around Bunno, pm me.
