Sunday jigging report no 15
Headed out super early and we were the 1st boat out as i knew it would be close to mayhem now that the demersal closure is on. We arrived out to the barge and could see fish sitting quite high in the water and quite away from the wreck. Water was quite sloppy as the easterlies were around the 12-15knots, so 1st few drops i was using my bigger outfit with a 340gr jig not knowing if there was anthing big. Took me a few drops but soon was onto an amber soon after John came past and not sure if they saw but a huge whale was right in the middle of us such an amazing site.
As the morning went on the day just got better and the boats were rolling in, i swapped to my lighter gear and as i found i was hooking the fish on a slowish retrieve i switch over to a tecknic kansas 200gr which is a slow fluttery jig seemed to work as from then onwards it was a drop a fish for me. Nothing big but a few of the bigger ambers really gave the pfleuger torsion a great run and am confident that it will do the job for the dhuies and odd sambo for demersal jigging.
Unfortunatley Leah didnt do much jigging as she was a lil sick but she did manage to hook a few ambers but seem to come off half way up, i really wished i got a big skippy as also mentioned by a few others but couldnt complain about the jigging. All up i jigged for about 5hours and raised heaps of ambers and about 5 sambos. On the way home we saw multiple pods of whales with many fully breaching, sometimes it doesnt hit you how lucky we are us boaties to see it as some pay big bucks to see them. Decided to troll after seeing some tuna about and 30mins of trolling included heaps of double hookups and Leah raised her first tuna.
Awesome day and seeing a few familiar faces from here was good especially the huge variety of peoples jigging techniques . Though i notice alot of people throwing the drifty out where as i prefer to have a person on the motor allowing the jig to go straight to the bottom or on the fishes head and get a hookup majorty of the time.
cheers

Ahh I didn't do so well up the front, but at least I didn't fall in! Mightymouse already had three onboard when he invited me, so I made myself scarce up the front for a bit!

great
hey mate, great story and pictures :) sounds like an awesome day and with wind getting better as the day rolled on. One question, I like the comment on keeping the boat in position while jigging.. is that the perferred (ooops sorry the best) method... I have normally only drifted and jogged - cheers

hey Johnno, i only do this
hey Johnno, i only do this when im jigging out real deep. 100m etc, why is because not always the fish are really thick under the boat so by the time you throw the drift anchor out, wait for the boat to be in position the fish are sometimes gone. I find thats common when the fish arent sitting on the wreck itself

If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.
