Two weeks in Exmouth
Just got back from two weeks in Exmouth, the weather wasn’t very kind and a week into the trip if you had asked me what I thought of Exmouth, I would have told you in no uncertain terms where you could stick Exmouth. My wife was going to send me home early because she couldn’t put up with all the complaints. But finally the weather cleared a little and we managed to find some fish.
A quick call to friend a in Perth to get some help with sounder settings so we could find fish in the deeper water helped too. As other people have commented there are a lot of sharks out there. We found closer to the back of the reef line they seem worse than when we were fishing in the deeper water. We made a point of moving once one of us hooked up a shark.
But by far the highlight of our trip was on the last day of fishing, my wife and I had caught a couple of nice reef fish and decided to troll back to the boat ramp in the deeper water hoping for a tuna or a wahoo. All of a sudden Alison’s rod started screaming, she jumped straight up and grabbed the rod as I put the boat in neutral and grabbed the other rod to get it out of her way. As I was bringing in the small skirted lure, Alison’s fish dropped off but I kept winding my line in and as it reached the back of the boat I saw what I thought was a wahoo coming up towards my skirt, just as the lure got to the back of the boat a striped marlin appeared and smashed the lure right in front of us, it took off away from the boat and line was peeling off my reel very quickly. We were both yelling at each other trying to get rods and lines out of the way when the marlin turned and came straight back at the boat jumping out of the water almost landing in the boat.
It then headed around to the front of the boat, but as I got to the bow the marlin turned again and went under the boat which meant the line when slack as the marlin jumped out of the water at the other side of the boat and won its freedom. Only other fishermen would understand, but that 60 seconds of excitement made up for the 16 hour drive up to Exmouth and all the bad weather. Unfortunately we don’t have any pics or footage of the marlin, but its burned in our minds and something we will never forget. I am already looking at making another trip up there to try and catch the one that got away.

Some great reds indeed
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Some nice reds there.
Some nice reds there. Unlucky about the marlin. Billfish are addictive once you have had a small taste.
