unluckiest fishing day ever

hi, today i went fishing with my mate lachieH (fishwrecked member) to the swan river trying for a few bream. lachie said to bring a heavier rod for some mulloway. so when we got there we setup and i cut up mullet pieces and bait and had a couple of bites. the lachie caught a under size bream. then we were trying for about 3 more hours but no luck untill i caught a undersize bream. i then put half a big mullet on the talica hoping for a mulloway then i casted it out and waited hours while me and lachie were fliking out lures. then my mum was about to pick us up so i wanted to prank her so i put a whole mullet on my little lure on my 6lb outfit and casted it 1m away so when my mum came i wanted her to think i caught it.  so i wated and wated but my mum was running late. so i put the fliky in the rod holder and went to see what my mate was catching 20m away. i then heard zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz i ran to the flicky and i striked the filky but then i relized i had just be spooled 120m clean of the spool. it took about 5 seconds to spool all the 6lb of the spool.

would that of been a mulloway or a massive ray?

...perhaps not so far-fetched...there was a story about a big one (50kg+?) caught near South Perth years ago. But yeah, trying to prank his mum and got pranked himself!

Good lesson

Tue, 2014-07-08 22:16

Bad luck mate, but you should take it as a good lesson for fishing the river. I watch people cast out into the middle of the river all the time and catch nothing, i rarely cast out more than 10 metres, and most of the time only half that distance.

If i fish 2 rods ( even on the beach ) One goes out far and one stays in close, i would say the bait not far out usualy gets the most action.

Keep trying and i'm sure you guy's will get that big fish soon .

6lb, little flicky

Thu, 2014-07-10 14:18

what reel and drag setting.

120m in 10 seconds.

It all seem pretty lite and possibilities there would be a Mulla, or shark. Wouldnt need a big Bullie to do that run, and a mulla would do the same.

I have been bumper by a sandpaper feeling solid object that wasnt a logadile setting a net years ago ago in the river at Ashfield. I was one the deep end a and cop and fisheries office mate was on the shallow end. Initially thought nothing of this bump as there is a few washed trees in the water, but when it re-bumbed me I suddenly transformed into a biblical figure and walked on water getting out. It almost certainly was something alive and had a sandpaper skin evident by the rash on My thigh. Certain it was a Bull shark after telling the tale to the fisheries guy and showing him the marks.

Me and the Cop neighbour was helping him research river fish in that area, as the net was right across the river, and covered surface to the bottom. Surprised at what we caught that far up,

Usual Bream, trumpeter, YTgrunters, but also flat head, cobbler, Flounder, tailor, Mullies (soapies), a couple of lost herring, a gaint herring that far up and 2 small shark, one identified as a Bull, the other not but cant remeber what it was> Didnt get any rays.

Needles to say I didnt volunteer to drag the net across for any other sets. It was his project, so he had to go.

Thu, 2014-07-10 18:50

I don't think we had much of a chance. Kingfisha had a 2-4lb graphite and size 1000 fin-nor.

drag setting was at the lightest possible so If you pulled the line on the floor  the rod wouldn't move. This is because a couple weeks ago he left the same combo on the floor with the drag locked up and caught a bream and we had to chase the rod into the water. We were 20m away so if the drag was locked up ther fish would have the whole rod reel and line in its mouth. Mustn't have had the biggest mouth because the mullet was baited with a size 1 hook baited through the mouth so it looked like it we had caught it legit. Maybe it was a 60cm bream or something XD.

It was probably a 40kg+ mulloway. Just think about it, you had your one chance to get that fish of a lifetime and you messed it up.

If you had your Alvey Lauchie

Fri, 2014-07-11 08:14

You would have still had 480M of line on by the time you reached the rod, and more than a fighting chance to land the mystery fish (at least get a look at it)....

You will never know if it was the mulla of a lifetime that got away. Try not to think about it though :P it will only grate on you.

I know i lost my first mulla and haven't hooked one since. Good lesson learned indeed.

Cheers,

D80

Sat, 2014-07-12 14:50

Was heading out for a quick fish in the swan and looked at the rod holder. This is the holder that the flicky was in. This shows the power of the bite. Dad had to try for an hour to finally get the holder back in shape.

BTW these are home made rod holders, that's why they look funny.

Fri, 2014-07-18 23:53

Hey Kingfisha, I fished the river when I was 13 years old back 1980. Used to catch the bus into town, get off on Pier st and buy bait from the fishmonger on Barrack st. Walk down to the Narrows by myself and spend all day there every weekend. I absolutely loved those days, catching Trumpeter, Tailor and Pilch. Not great fish but at that age catching a fish was a thrill. You remind me of all that, enjoy it while you can bud because it soon goes.
