What 4wd to buy?

 Hi all,

looking for any input on experiences with 4wd as I'm in the market for a new car.

I have had a 200 series petrol Landcruiser for the last couple of years and it has been awesome but before I blindly just replace it with another, would be good to hear people suggestions.

It will need at least a 3 tonne towing rating and will tow the boat anywhere from the metro area and up to Coral Bay. Apart from towing the boat, it will just be on-road driving around the metro area.

availability may be a big factor as I'd like to get a car within the next couple of weeks.

cheers

Maybe check out some of the bigger Yank Trucks, eg. F250, Chev Silverado/GMC Sierra, Dodge Ram?

There were a heap of them at the 4wd show on display. Look very nice. But they are BIG. But if like you were saying its mainly for towing your boat and road driving, you probably dont need a smaller 4wd to get down narrow tracks anyway. Plus they have massive towing capacities.

One of the other guys on here, Feral, got himself an Xtra Cab F250 to tow his tub as it worked out cheaper than a TD 100 or 200 Cruiser, and its a beast of a thing!!!

These were one of the companies showcasing the big Yank Trucks at the show

Think also Barbagallow had them on display too.

I had the same decision to make and ended up buying a 3LTD Jeep Grand Cherokee and love it. Tows the boat like a dream, all the nice extras and good on the sand/offroad.

Tundra in perth oooh yeh, always wanted one myself!!

Yes they are rated to 3.5T and i have no doubt they would do it with ease.

My boat loaded up the other day was close to 3T, so have towed that and a car full of blokes no worries at all. The economy is awesome, i have done 2 trips to rocko and back and they came up as 13.3l/100 and 15.7l/100. Not really long enough hauls for a good reading but it is very good. Unloaded around town 10l/100 and fwy 7l/100.

Its brilliant, lots of comment about them here if your are interested.Feel free to come for a ride oneday if your interested.

Far canal! Nice looking units, would look better with a big set of off roaders. Hmm V8 fuel consumption would be interesting........ but if you can afford one fuel shouldn't be an issue I guess.

Second 3LTR Jeep Cherokee

Fri, 2012-11-23 22:31

Have also found ours to be fantastic at towing. Fully loaded up 24ft Jayco Sterling caravan with all the kids gear comes close to 3 tonne. Towed down to busselton and back, as well as moore river. Towing economy in the 12-13.5/100. Absolutly blown away by the pick-up and performance that we have gotten out it so far. Benefit as well as the pricing of these 4wd is better than you would get from toyotas. More standard equiptment for price that you get in the toyota landcruiser. Definatley worth a look at. The jeep also handles great on road with a fantastic ride.

Cheers OX

Range Rover Sport 2010

Sat, 2012-11-24 10:05

I've got the Range Rover Sport 3.0 twin turbo that was towing a 2052 Trophy and can't rate it high enough. Have sold the Trophy and waiting on new tub but I found a great deal in QLD, flew over and drove back. H/way is returning around 9L and towing 2.7t around 13.5L. Price paid was lower than equivilent Landcruiser and well, it was the most comfortable drive back across the flat bit that I've had. Last service cost me $350 from a mobile, accredited technician so I've been a bit blown away, takes a lot for me to like a car but bloody happy with this.

Bunbury Jeep

Sat, 2012-11-24 18:10

We bought ours from Bunbury Jeep. At that time they were the only guys who had stock. Gave us a great trade in on our old car. Beat anything offered in perth and was a great way to give the jeep a good drive. Worth the trip down as the guys down there were really good with their customer service and assistance.

Sat, 2012-11-24 18:27

Maddington had some Grands last week. I nearly bought one.  $56000 on road with air suspension & tow pack & always hit 'em up for a full tank of fuel.

Sticking with the Wrangler for now though!!

Decision mad- hopefully

Tue, 2012-11-27 21:23

Had a drive of the grand Cherokee on the weekend and yep, they definitely have got some poke for a diesel.

was a tough choice but after having a cruiser, I don't think I can lose the little bit of space if I went with the jeep- so bit the bullet and put an offer on another cruiser today. Think the salesman almost choked on his pen when I gave him my price- but it's the end of the month so tomorrow should see if I get it or not.

new boat turned up yesterday as well so if the car doesn't come off, going to be bloody hard going getting the boat to the ramp on the back of a pushy!!

May I be rude and ask what u offered.

Only asking cos I bargained them don't to 85k on the road with matts and a tow ball. U shouldn't pay anymore than that as they have sold me and. 2 mates cruisers for the same price. If u want to know who we went through or which dealer pm me.

Wed, 2012-11-28 17:09

Saw this thread and thought I would jump on for some advice as well.

My drive is a 100 series V8 petrol Sahara and I also am looking to make the change to get some better towing capability. I've considered the CRD Jeep but have been a little turned off by rumours of unreliability and plastic bits etc falling off. Not having a go at the Jeep as I reckon the looks are great and the performance is sensational BUT dont fancy making my way home on the back of a tow truck. How are you Jeep owners finding the reliability, how many KMS have you got up so far ?

Also considered the Range Rover but again put off by issues with airbag replacement, I need to dig a bit more.

I love the Sahara as its got all the creature comforts but its a really lazy V8 - Considering a new exhaust and a rechip which should give me 22kw and about and 50nm of torque extra but its a $5k experiment - does anyone have any feedback in this area ?

cheers

Wed, 2012-11-28 19:06

 G'day Sammy,

I offered a little bit more than that but I went for the twin turbo diesel Sahara just for something different.

i had a price of just over $84k for a GXL with towbar so sounds on the money- pardon the pun.

cruise control, I have just sold a 200 series petrol, 4.7 V8, and they have plenty of grunt for towing. I towed about 2.5- 3 tonne with it on Monday and I was quite impressed with it. I think thereis quite a big difference in the performance between to 100 and 200 series.

driving the 4.5 t turbo diesel is Lordy good as well. A little bit sluggish from takeoff, but as soon as the turbo kicks in, hang on!

drove the jeep on the weekend and it def drives very nice but I can't comment on towing. Quite a few good comments on them though.

Reason I won't for the cruiser was mainly due to size and a bit more torque. The $210 fixed price servicing for three years is nice as well :)

cheers

10,000 on my jeep half of which is towing the boat and shes mint. Has been driven pretty hard offroad. I drove a 100 series td and i was turned off it, too slow no grunt haha!

But if you dont mind the smaller car the jeep is wicked, but the 200 series def has more room!

Those Tundras look great, but

Thu, 2012-11-29 08:15

Those Tundras look great, but no diesel ?
I'd never go back to petrol for a vehicle like that with today's Diesels now being so refined, not to mention torquey as hell.

The Land Rover Discovery 4 or Range Rover Sport with the 3.0L sequential turbo engines are awesome.
I'd always go the Disco over the RR sport if planning any REAL off road work, plus the interior room and layout is much more usable.
I've currently got the 2.7l TDV6 Disco 3 and it pulls like a train, but the 3.0L's are on another level again.
(Ideally I'd love a Disco with the RR 3.6L TDV8, but they aren't going to do that any time soon)

For utes, we've used Rodeo / Colorado / DMax 4x4 TD crew cabs for my business since 2004 and they have always been good performers, but I just checked out the new Ford Ranger models last week and they are a game changer for that category of vehicle.
It trumps all competition on every level.

The 3.2l / 147kW / 470Nm engine is a ripper, and so quiet.
3.35 tonne towing capacity.
Nice big tubs. (despite being good vehicles, the D-Max / Rodeo crew cab tubs were always too short for us)

The XL is just the basic "hill-trolley" model
The XLT has plenty of nice upgrades.
The "WildTrak" model has all the gizmos, leather seats & bling items.

And it appears they've seriously rocked hilux's long-term "bench-mark" domination of that market
We've just started involvement a big construction project, and all the big firms are now using them instead of Hiluxes.
For the last 20 yrs+ it's been Hilux city on a job like that, with a few Rodeos, Colorados, Tritons, navaras etc being used by the smaller players, but not now - The proportion of Hiluxes is now much much lower.

I think BHP have just made 5-star safety ratings mandatory for their vehicles too, so The Ranger is their only option until Toyota play catch-up with the Hilux in 2013.

Only problem now is that the Ranger is now more expensive than a Hilux.
