What to do - pulling an anchor

 Hi all

Getting to old (and lazy) to climb up front and pulling the anchor.

What do you suggest to help my aging back?

Have a 5.4m Trailcraft and wondering about a drum winch or windlass (or other suggestions). Just hitting a button and up comes the anchor is so appealing.

Any suggestions welcome as I have always just pulled them??

Cheers

Neels

The other option which I would love to do if I didn't have bow rails is install a Minn Kota iPilot linked to my GPS so I can spot lock over good ground rather than anchor as well as setup customised drift over good ground and customised tracks along riverbanks and reefs etc

A drum winch is on my list

Fri, 2016-07-15 18:50

A drum winch is on my list of things to buy when I have some spare cash that's for sure.

From what I have read on here they are for some people almost a necessity....and the older I get the more I believe in this.

Do a search for "drum winch" and there is some very good threads to be found.I am still undecided which one I will get when the time comes and will do a little more reseaarch when I am ready to purchase one.

But, definitely would be worth the money I recon

Anchor Puller.

A large float with a clip on it.  Attach it to the anchor rope & slide it down to the anchor.

Much easier than pulling it & a lot cheaper than a winch.

The float will slide down over the chain to the anchor & lift it to the surface.

Just a matter of driving down the line & gathering the rope as you go.

We anchored a Trailcraft in 60 meters at Gnaraloo & no probs

Worth a try IMO......

Get a big muscular decky

Take a big muscular deckie out with you, to be serious now using a big polystyrene ball and loop it's cheap and effective. You can buy a set up with a spring loaded clip etc, or just make up a big (150 - 200mm diam) steel loop and attach it to a big poly ball hook the loop over the anchor rope, drive away and up comes the pick.

Very simple to use, no motors or moving parts to maintain.

Go the drum style. I have the Lewmar and spend a lot of time up front putting the rope back in the spool. It can be a real pain in the ass!
