Wind on Leaders slipping? your experiences

has one out there had wind on leaders slipping out of the dacron using mono main line
i know alot of people who have lost good fish to wind ons slipping and bringing back in only the dacron loop attacted to their plait/bimini etc.
i have had a couple 150lb leaders slip aswell brand new out of the packet.
have many of you experienced this before ?
i have heard and seen myself a few brands where is starts to slide down the dacron and also slipped completely out of the dacron.
i was told by many charter operators who chase big barel tuna and marlin that they dont use wind ons its to risky
whats your thoughts and do you trust them?
if your chasing that fish of a life time using mono main line would you use one ?

PR knot
Mate I use the PR bobbin to tie on a length of Jinkai or Black Magic in the required breaking strain and I use it for every type of fishing I do. I have never had that knot slip.

FG for all braid to mono but
FG for all braid to mono but mono to mono i use wind on's but ill only use my own now after having one slip. I go overboard with the length of mono in the dacron but gives me more confidence. Also its important the dacron is the right thickness for the given leader.

depends what he's using it
depends what he's using it for.
If he's using the wind on onto mono for trolling - then isn't so easy to do a PR or FG on mono mainline to leader!
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Like anything really, quality
Like anything really, quality is the issue & those o/s ones are shithouse
Never had any issue with an Oz made Richter, even ran one on the pe 6 jigger for a whole season & only then there was some fray

ive been using the rovex
ive been using the rovex wind on leaders for years and have pushed them to absolute limits on huge sharks and all my helium ballooning, never had one slip and they have a lot of mono inside the dacron compared to a lot of other brands.
always looking for a new challenge!!

I use the Aussie made Shane
I use the Aussie made Shane Doevy wind ons. Been using them since he was working on the prototypes. Caught countless marlin and never had one slip. I use them in every line class up to 37kg. Only ones I would ever trust in the tournaments I fish.

tie my own
I use tennis racket string, lightly scuff about 2 metres (sand paper lightly), thread the 130lb dacron over the mono, a 2 inch weave with a whip finish does the trick at one end.
The loop is threaded back on its self and the stiched. Never had one come undone.
They slip when the mono instert is short and too shiny.

Alot of wind ons slip
because they are not made properly. I use MJ's Custom tackle wind on's and have not had a problem. They are available on eBay. They have a generous amount of dacron/spectra for the length of the leader and are made properly. If you read the blurb you will see what I mean. They are a decent price as well. In saying that, they can move on stretchy mono. The mono will catapillar out of the dacron. They can also get knocked off by the tip of your rod on the way in if they are not made properly as well. If you buy a decent wind on and maintain it you shouldn't have a prob.

I've tried one of MJ's when
I've tried one of MJ's when fishing heavy tackle in exmouth and had the Dacron split and the whole thing frayed and fell apart. I was going to save it and send it back but ended up just ditching it at the end of the trip.
Was a 300lber from memory.

Mono to mono, I am too cheap
Mono to mono, I am too cheap to use wind on and found the GT knot reasonably reliable. Not as good as a good wind on but cheap.
I prefer FG for braid to mono.

Wind on leaders
Yep the Richter Australian hand made wind on leaders are the best by far. Used these for years from Barramundi to Marlin and never had one slip. Hand tied and quality checked before being sent out to the shops. 100% confidence. Have heard of others being an issue.

A bit confused here
When you mean wind on leaders are you talking about the ones with the "sock" of dacron you slip the leade into it, ie like some fly fishing leaders to fly line?
For fly line to leader with a dacron loop to tippets I do use them but have a huge lenght inserted, and then use Histacryl ( the medical stitch glue) to add security.
With wind on anything else no way, tie my own. Even thought and used a bimini to bimini and cats paw the braid to the leader Bimini and have been impressed, but it is extra work and Im not sure it is worth it.
Am I hearing and interpreting the correct thing here.
Dont like pre-manufactured anything that I might be able to make myself.

Thats the one
I use a windon when I need a strong, long leader and (9 metres). It makes it easier to cast as the Knot to the main line is small enough to pass easily through the eyes.

When making wind ons it is
When making wind ons it is important the dacron fits like a chinese finger trap. Some manufacturers may have just relied on glue, hence the failure.
Mine hold without the glue but I also bind and use a special glue to back it up HTH
