Winter tailor
Submitted by lachieH on Sat, 2014-06-21 22:21
Just looking at all the posts in tailor fishing over the past month or so and everyone is catching their pb tailor on lures. I was down at trigg last Sunday morning and everyone was using bait and not even a bite! So is it lures or bait for winter beach fishing for tailor? If it's lures are just normal stick baits all right?

DeffinTly lures for the big
DeffinTly lures for the big ones mate Maria bull hops are my favourite although they have been discontinued now should be able to find them still on the shelf though
yoy want to fish reefy country rather than beach gutters as we'll, in my experience the big ones don't hang out in schools and I put in about a hundred casts for one or 2 quality fish above 70 cm, just be persistent and don't stop until it's pitch black they will still hit lures after dark

Swell isn't necessarily a
Swell isn't necessarily a bad thing for tailor. I would say Trigg Isn't a bad place to start but if fishing from the rocks take the necessary safety precautions, heard too many bad stories from there.

I went Friday morning, pretty decent swell, hooked up on two big tailor on a stickbait but lost them both in the waves. Trigg is good if u can avoid the idiots down there.

Last time I was at trigg
Last time I was at trigg beach (was my first time there) the locals said the swell was too low (1.2m) and there was no chance of catching a tailor. What is the minimum swell for for tailor at trigg do u think?

I wouldn't get too hung up on
I wouldn't get too hung up on the specifics of the swell values. Dawn/dusk, a bit of surface chop is preferable and some white water from breaking waves - use the surf cams on seabreeze to check the conditions before going.

Dawn Clear water mate, if its
Dawn Clear water mate, if its sandy n stired up, find clearer area, white wash into deeper water is a winner,
blue holes is good but be prepared to deal with old locals casting over your shoulder,
ricters, metals, smiling jack, three lures is all I use, just pack light and walk ull find a reef wash area that looks fishy, and just commit to it,
you'll soon learn what works and what doesn't in regards to conditions, need swell to create the wash, other factors too play a part but not as much as in the wind and tides
ricter from first cast till just after first light, then metals, til sun hits the back if the reef your fishing, then mr jack with a nice consistent slowish retrieve....let him get his twerk on
good luck mate, once you catch the winter tailor ull not care about the summer tiddlers any more
The art of fishing consists of casting, winding, trolling and jigging
while freezing, sweating, swatting and swearing.
