your conscience

been meaning to post this up for a while but only just getting around to it!

I have done my fair share of hunting in my short life (im 21) and have always wondered how others deal with taking an animals life. Ive seen animals suffer before there put out of there misery and to be honest it has kept me awake a couple of nights.

Shooting is fine and i enjoy it as a vermin control method, quick and easy no real suffering. Pigging with dogs and "sticking" pigs would be my most cruel hobby and i still have the belife it is a quick and humane way to go about it.

I will only kill something if im going to eat it or its a vermin that destroys native bushland/cull, what gets me is the noise some animals make when they are going threw there impending doom, weather its a not so flash shot or a dog hanging off pig. I am always in game mode when the hunts on but afterwards it can give me the blues if you think about it to much.

I find people connect with animals that can make noise/comunicate and thus stops them wanting to cull animals due to feeling bad about it, but everyones had a go at fishing, i would be quitley confident that people can kill fish easier because there isnt so much eye contact/comunication.

and all this brings me to the main question, if fish made a noise when you where killing them, how would it influence your fishing/taking fish for the table?

ask yourself, would you rather go out and have the pleasure of catching it and cutting it up yourself etc,

or going to buy the fillets for $80/kilo and feeling better about yourself for not being the one to wield the knife.

I think if fish made a lot

Mon, 2011-08-01 21:07

I think if fish made a lot of noise like a dog or a pig when it was being killed it would affect a lot more people... which is sad, seeing as though it shouldnt matter what animal or noises it makes.

The problem i find is that people seem to have a ranking for animals. Like whales or dogs or tigers. If they die or be killed then everyone makes a huge uproar, but wouldnt think twice with fish or other "lower" animals. But thats just what i reckon..

yeah mate it would definately take a bit of getting used to if fish made noise. i just think if i dont eat this herring or whatever i catch, something else down there is most likely going to eat it anyway. you forget it pretty quickly after opening the al foil to pinky or dhuie coming out of the oven :P

i do get strange pleasure out of dressing an animal, knowing that the animal will fight for its life makes it easier and gives them respect i feel.

Mon, 2011-08-01 21:18

in my opinion i believe that an endothermic's ("warm blooded") nervous system is a lot more developed than a poikilothermic ("cold blooded") nervous system, which would cause a fish a lot less suffering compared to a mamal such as a kangaroo or a rabbit.

so wether or not a fish makes a noise would not be relevant to me, the relevance lays in the degree of pain and suffering the animal endures.

just an opinion

I think if fish made noises

Mon, 2011-08-01 22:49

I think if fish made noises it would be harder but it would not stop me from fishing and dispatching the fish. Although after every fish is dispatched i do thank it for its life and its meat more or less a sign of respect on my behalf. It was a living creature and has been sacrificed to ensure I get fed to live on. But yeh I do think that people are very disconnected from where the meat comes from and the the noises animals make when being slaughtered and think many people would not be able to do the job hearing the noises which come from them which are like you said quite distressing at times.

Some Fish do make noise

Tue, 2011-08-02 07:53

Grunters, trevors and mulla all protest when you bring them onboard. It is funny that I dont take "grunting" or 'croaking" fish, prefering to let them go, but due to taste and with Mulla I just cant kill such a beautiful predator and I dont like the taste much.

I'm a firm believer that if your not willing to do the dirty work yourself then you shouldn't be able to sit at the table and eat your steak guilt free.
How about jacks and big red bass? Their eyes follow you around when they are out of the water. A little disconcerting.

For me  it doesn't matter  what your quarry is  You have the duty to Humanely dispatch it. Weather that be ikijiming (spelling?) a fish or squid. Or Putting an extra shot in don’t let the animal suffer.

I used to run a small hatchery, and its crueler to sell roosters than kill them, so plenty of meals there. If the animal was raised ok, fed well and killed humanely I don't think its bad.

The funny thing was that a few people involved in the project thought we were way nastiser than people that just got their meat on a foam tray at the shops.

i used to hunt a lot too, but it's crossing my mind a lot more since taking up the bow.

killing a fish is a lot more personal than shooting something as it's dying in your hands.

everything deserves a quick humane death if it's life is to be taken. it's how i'd want it.

i think it would make a difference to me if it was squeeling like a stuck pig.

Tue, 2011-08-02 13:24

Very good idea for a thread. I have been meaning to post something like this for a while now.

If and when i decide to take a fish i will first brain spike then cut the throat. Never the other way around. I want the fish dead as quick as possible.

I cant stand seeing people leave a fish in a bucket to die slow. I will often go over and ask if i can kill and bleed  it for them .

I really love all animals and fishing for me is such a catch 22. Im so passionate about fishing but i really dont like killing fish but i get comfort in knowing that i only take what i need. Release everything else as safe and carefull as i can

Tue, 2011-08-02 13:26

One thing  that i really feel bad now doing is live baiting. After getting in the water and seeing how freindly fish are its now dam hard to put a hook throug a fish back and lob it out but unfortunatly its one of the best ways to land a big mulla

Lucky for me the fish that put me off most get put back, billfish with their mouth open in photos just look so stressed.

kill a chicken, or cow or lamb etc then I reckon there would be a few more vegetarians. Its not a nice business, but if you want to eat meat then it is a necessary one.

Watching it on TV is one thing, being up close and personal is toally another - very, very confronting.

Steer

Wed, 2011-08-03 07:13

Did it up here recently with a steer and group of 15-17 year old students. Farmer shot and bleed it, we then did the full butchering, hung it and returned at a later date to cut it and bag it.

They all mucked in and did there bit. The meat tasted sensational on the barbie later on and there was no complaints about eating it.

Good to see where those pretty little meat trays come from.

some hunt with a rifle others

Wed, 2011-08-03 08:57

some hunt with a rifle others with a shopping trolley, either way I do not believe in killing for fun, but only for the pot or for exstermination of vermin. Also no cruelty should be in the issue and the kill be clean & quick.

I was a chairman of a large RSPCA in South Africa some time back and hunted for the pot too, so often had to answer to the bunny-huggers how I could live with myself. Also both my wife and I are of farming family back ground, so the chook for dinner was often as fresh as 3 hours before lunch! and the beef was butchered, hung and cured in the cold shed too.

If you don't like that, tofu and carrots are the next option, then again who says they don't have feelings too.....lol
