Very Lucky People
Submitted by carnarvonite on Wed, 2015-10-28 08:42Got a phone call at 1930 from Gnaraloo station reporting 2 sixty year old windsurfers had failed to come in as planned at 1600. Rang Water Police for instructions and put our crews on standby, organised extra fuel and food plus relief crew to be taken up to the bay while waiting for the search plane to reach the area. Plan was to head off at 0300 and arrive off the bay at around first light
Got a call confirming our plans and the go ahead about 2100, informed all involved, notified work and went to bed. Woke up to a conversation on the VHF between water police and the dornier search plane that they had located the second bloke on a beach and were directing the shore party to him, the first bloke had got to shore around 2230. So it was back on the phone to confirm with water police, stand down crews, cancel fuel and food and try to get back to sleep.
Two bloody lucky people, there is no way I would like to be in the water at night up there and have to come over the reef anytime is scary.

sorry but its anouther bent st boat ramp
Submitted by petermac on Tue, 2015-10-27 21:05wifey and me were at the bent st boat ramp today to walk our aussie bulldog. trying to pull in to the carpark an officious bloke in a straw hat is trying to wave us away with his fist clenched. backed out ended parking up on the grassy area . Straw hat had both ramps blocked off with a twin trailer semi heaps of vehicles were trying to pull in with there with boats behind them causing a log jam. I walked past him and said " how much longer is this pandemonium going to go on his response " whats your problem you old c*** " I hit the roof and gave him a spray explaining how the 6 week project was now into its 4th week and they hadn't finished the right hand side yet. response " doing our f***g best" me "well your best isn't very good and if you swear at me again I might be pushing 60 but will put you on your arse" about then the bent street brains trust all stood up clapping shouting its about time they were told . I got home rang the bloke at council that is in charge of the job and he was beside himself , seems he is going to give him a have a word with him about dealing with the public , and make sure they double the amount of blokes working on the job

DIY pond!
Submitted by Ashen on Mon, 2015-10-26 16:45Just thought I'd post up some pics of the pond I made. It took me a month from the first shovel of soil to how it is today! First time I've ever done an inground pond! Sorry if it looks dodgy!! Haha
Digging the pond. Took me f#%king 2 full days to dig it!! Measurements are: 2.4m long x 1.2m wide x 60cm deep (deepest section). Theres also a stepped section which is only 20cm deep.
Liner laid. Filled and testing for leaks:

Nearly finished. The "decking" is made from raw pine pallets which I got from work. Will be painting them a grey slate colour to match the Patio.

Waterfall & filter. The filter is a large black tub which sits behind the waterfall. Water is pumped from the pond using 2 pumps. Will be buying a larger pump to increase waterfall flow.

The shallow end. I'll be adding river pebbles to this section to add abit of contrast to the main pond area.

Inhabitants: 4 baby koi and 4 large goldfish.
Plants: Some duckweed and elephant ear plant in the filter box and a Blue money wort in the shallow area. Will be adding water lillies in the main section.
Well, thats it for now! I'll say it again, its my first attempt so please disregard the dodgy look of the pond!! Haha!

Anyone used one of these ?
Submitted by Ericl on Sat, 2015-10-24 07:21Hi
Bought some of these "waterproof" connectors from an auto accesories store. The part number on the Narva packaging is 57522BL.
There are 2 components, the short one on the left which receives the female (short) connectors and the longer one on the right which receives the male connectors.
The short one has a red bit clipped on the front and the long bit has a red bit inserted in the body. From what I can see, it is impossible to insert the short into the long with the red bit in place, so I removed it and it seems to work OK. My question is does anyone know if they are both meant to be used ?
Cheers for any replies
Eric

Rottnest Convoy
Submitted by davidbland50 on Wed, 2015-10-21 22:19Hi All,
Was wondering how many are going or are considering going on next month's Rottnest Convoy held by the BIAWA? I personally have done it several times and am going again. It's not that I don't know how to get to Rottnest, far from it I know how to do it very well. It is the enjoyable time had with other boaties spending a weekend with other mates or family doing what they love the most. Top it off with a very rewarding quiz night and a gastronomic dinner ($35 per head) usually at the Rottnest Lodge and you have probably the best $150 per boat spent on a weekend. Hope to see you all there on the weekend of 7-8th November

Two fishermen swim to shore after vessel sinks
Submitted by bleicester on Wed, 2015-10-14 12:12Just a reminder to stay safe out there lads.
Without any further info it's hard to understand their line of thought to swim over 1km to shore at 3am instead of raising the alarm. Presumably the radio was underwater but why not activate the EPIRB and sit tight on the upturned hull of the boat with para flares ready? I'm not dissing the guys and am glad they got back safe. Just trying to learn from the experience in the off chance I ever find myself in the same situation.

Quick Weekend Exmouth Run
Submitted by carnarvonite on Wed, 2015-10-14 06:30Did a run up to Exmouth to catch up with son Jeff [Deepwater] and his family, left Carnarvon on Thursday and hit the water down the bottom of the Gulf after he knocked off work at the airport around 1100 Friday morning to give the prawns a shot. After much running around and trial tosses with the cast net we finally found a patch of good size banana prawns, finishing up with about 10 litres.
Did a run out to Jeff's goldband spot on the Saturday morning and found things a bit quiet with only a few smaller fish playing the game, we were about to move when along comes a drop in pinger, started his drift about 30 metres behind us so gave him a not so gentle reminder of what I thought of him and his actions before heading well south to try for a red emperor or two.
Travelled some 8-9nm trolling for about half the distance and losing the hook up of a small marlin we arrived at a spot and chatted with one of Jeff's mates and watched his missus pull up a monster Robinson sea bream so drove on another mile or so and dropped the lines over the side. Jeff hooked up straight away and Dazza and I a minute later. Jeff finished up with the red emperor and we both got shark on what we think were reds about the same size. Time to move so headed another mile further south for a good tomato cod, spangly and a couple of honeycomb cod.
Looking at the time we decided it was time to head back to Tantas at a troll as Dazza had to get back to Tom Price that arvo so out go the lures. Got to a mile south of the leads when we get a phone call from home saying the road south is closed due to a truck roll over so its time to fill the quota and no rush.
Head out to another goldy spot , first drop and Dazza pulls in a double header and Jeff follows suit a 3 minutes later. I get a single, Dazza scores a NW blowie and Jeff comes up with our limit for goldies.
Out go the lures yet again, the tail gets snipped off one by a wahoo with no hook up and we spend half an hour circling massive bait schools getting monstered by small striped tuna with no result except for missing the hook up of a big Spaniard.
All up a great day, lot of travelling in excellent conditions and one fish short of our limit but who's complaining.

according to 60 minutes tonight
Submitted by petermac on Sun, 2015-10-11 19:52apparently according to the 60 minutes 23 year old shark expert she says tiger sharks are harmless and there are no recorded attacks by them , here to disagree , a pearl diver in broome 30 years ago was taken by a tiger shark, shot a 12foot tiger shark with a smokie about 27 years ago when it charged me at onslow all I can say is it was a very scary moment I was lucky I knew it was there rather than it just coming at me out or the blue
