REGS
Submitted by max199 on Mon, 2007-11-19 20:30 Now that it's the time of year for recreational divers to get some crays, I was wondering what kind of regs do you all own and how easy are they to use, breathe at deeper depths. I bought second hand regs from ebay from a guy in QLD for $550 a couple years back and was the best investment I made regarding diving.
They are MARES proton ice regs and got a alt air source as the same one! They are a great first stage and second stage set up. So when anything goes wrong with the second stage, main reg, I'll just swap it over wuth the alt. air source reg, spare reg.
I had them checked out and they haven't even been adjusted according to my local POM dive shop owner, Dolphin Dive in Welshpool. What do you use?

MUSSELS
Submitted by max199 on Sun, 2007-11-18 11:10 Does any body here know how many muscles can be caught in the metro area. Also is there a size limit? In the past I have dived for them and caught roughly each time around half a cray bag full. They are all of a large size and very tasty. I went yesterday a matter of fact and cleaned them and cook them and then freeze them in containers until I need them. Also I ate a few raw which were awsome. Also the typical chilli muscles dish. Plenty around and I think I do the Marine Dept. a favour by getting them I reckon. Maintenace on there lines, hint!
Any help would be appreciated peoples

My apology FW members!
Submitted by SPESS on Fri, 2007-11-16 14:22It seems that i have heard of a few people not happy with me cancelling the landbased trip. I truely apologize for any inconvienence i have caused but i had something major like "buying a new buisness" to consider at the time and i had to pull out due to finalizing exsisting client deals and contracts at my old company so i could move foward into my own.
I will promise to get another trip on the way as soon as i can and "WILL" make it a goer :) However the new job is going to keep me away for a while and ill get onto it when i return.
PS: Make sure its still the best site around when i get back, see you guys in a couple of months...........
Cheers SPESS!

Weekend fishing
Submitted by jay_burgess on Fri, 2007-11-16 14:22Well the weekend is almost here. We've got most of the gear packed and the clock is ticking down to our trip. We're heading off this afternoon to a river up the coast for 2 days barra fishing. Tides are right, weather has been good (and hot!). Great conditions for barra fishing. Should get plenty of pics and I will report when we get home.
So what has everone else got planned for this weekend?

tinnie fuel tank leaking
Submitted by scano on Fri, 2007-11-16 06:46hi guys
i just want to put it out there and ask the question of what you all do for storage of tinny / small runabout fuel tanks. i have the usual 22ltr red plastic tanks and i keep them stored in my tinnie in the carport. I have found that when it gets anthing above about 25 degrees the fuel and fuel vapour expands. When the tank is pressurised due to warm weather the fuel leaks out of the brass fuel line connector.I come home and the carport skinks of fuel.
Is it best to leave the ventilation bung on top of the vank unscrewed so it can breathe? the only concern i could see with this would be the fuel evaporating and then the oil / fuel mix would be way too oily cos half of the fuel has dissapeared?
any idea's or suggestions of how you normally store yours and what you do to prevent this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Adam
Submitted by Simon C on Wed, 2007-11-14 21:37Just got back from two weeks in exmouth, will post a bit of a report with pics once various fishing partners send them through. Wanted to give a big shout out to Adam for the tips and for coming fishing and catching every single fish for the day trolling (I have since added an orange cd18 to my collection). Also a big thanks to Ant from Bluewater who was forthcoming with info and tips. To any newbie to Exmouth go with low expectations and an open mind and set of ears. I consider myself to be a reasonably proficient fisherman, but local knowledge cannot be beaten, especially in a place with such variable weather and tides. It really was two weeks of learning, of which the biggest lesson is "don't go in November". Seriously fishy spot, and can't wait to get back and hopefully get at least a couple of days to get out wide.

That time of year again!
Submitted by Anonymous on Tue, 2007-11-13 15:58The blessings of the fleets have been held, licences are being renewed and fishers, both recreational and commercial, are preparing for another season of catching and enjoying one of our State’s most popular seafoods.
Recreational fishers and commercial operators in Zone B can begin catching Western Rock Lobster from 5.30am this Thursday 15 November. Zone B stretches from north of Jurien to near Exmouth and includes the major fishing ports of Dongara, Geraldton and Kalbarri. Commercial rock lobster fishers in Zone C (which includes Jurien, the Perth metropolitan coast and South West waters to Cape Leeuwin) will begin their season on Sunday 25 November.
Department of Fisheries Principal Management Officer Kevin Donohue said Western Australia’s rock lobster fishery had a worldwide reputation for being a well-managed and sustainable fishery, which had a catch value of around $245 million last year.
“The commercial fishers have shown an ongoing commitment to sustainability principles and embracing strategies to avoid negative environmental impacts as shown through the industry’s work on avoiding potential whale entanglements in pot lines and the use of sea lion exclusion devices in specified zones,” he said.
“For recreational fishers, the rock lobster season often meant the opportunity to enjoy WA’s marine experience and the chance to bring back a tasty catch for Christmas and holiday meals.
“What we would ask is that recreational fishers give themselves a refresher on all the rules that apply - including fishing times, bag and possession limits, minimum size restrictions.
“This season we especially remind recreational fishers of their responsibility to clip or punch the central flap of the tail fan of any lobsters that they keep and that they must do that within 5 minutes of taking them out of the water. The lobsters must also be kept whole until they are prepared for consumption.”
Department of Fisheries Supervising Scientist Dr Nick Caputi said catches were expected to remain below average this season, due to weak Leeuwin Currents 3 and 4 years ago that led to low puerulus (juvenile lobster) settlement in coastal reefs.
“The last strong Leeuwin Current was in 2000, but, the commencement of a La Nina cycle may see a strong current return next year,” Dr Caputi said.
Details about recreational rock lobster fishing rules, including the zone where sea lion exclusion devices must be used in pots, can be found on the Department’s website at www.fish.wa.gov.au.

Abu 5600 vs Abu 6500
Submitted by rickets on Tue, 2007-11-13 09:09Right, this is more of a troubleshooting thread regarding the Abu c4 5600.
I use this reel on a Abu Morrum 5-6KG stick, and for some reason, everytime I cast this thing, it fails.. either in a birdsnest hardc0re or the lure/jighead flies out and just goes straight down into the water/sand below me rather than out into the blue yonder...
I have an Abu c3 6500 which is on a Morrum 6-8KG stick and this reel absolutely pwns, it casts mega far using a 40 gram metal and I have no problems using this thing with little or no brakes.
However, for some stupid reason, I just cant cast the 5600!
the 5600 has 14lb suffix on it and the 6500 has 20lb fireline.
Any ideas why?
Does anyone else have experience with these two reels and find there is a massive casting difference and technique between them or should it be pretty straight forward... if you can cast one, you should be able to cast the other???
Maybe its the Rod? Or Lurweight to line ratio?
I was casting the 6500 flat out with over the shoulder casts, nothing small like under or side arm so yeah, just so dumbfounded as to why this 5600 doesnt like me.

Heating and bending chemically sharpened hooks
Submitted by Jim on Mon, 2007-11-12 15:50DO any of you guys heat and bend chemically sharpened hooks?
Ive just started doing it to heavy duty livebait hooks (hoodlums) to make them octopus style.
They seem strong enough but am worried when they are under load the heating and bending may have made the hooks brittle causing them to snap. Anyone had problems with snapping them?

One guy was using metals and only managed the one, and another guy got nothing on roosta 80s. Seemed to take a liking to bait this morn!
good fun though, got soaked by the waves but it was worth it..
