Tailor Hunting
Submitted by rickets on Sat, 2007-11-10 08:26Ok, well, i thought it might be a good idea, since tis the season now for it and coming up... to throw it all out there about hunting these fish..
Now I dont mean, knock off from work, its blowing a NW or SW not too strong to battle to cast and not too light for no chop so Ill go fishing and see what happens at sunset...
I mean: OK I am going to hunt tailor, ANYTIME OF THE DAY..
Apart from the usual rigmarole of berleying up bigtime near some whitewashy, reefy sandy gutter or hole, i really want to get a good list of spots that can fire during the day, aswell as early morning and sunset...
Im sure others would be keen on finding out some info on this as I hate it when you got some time up ya sleeve for fishing and you wanna go L/B and you want to try for some tailor but you got no bloody options because its either too sunny, or too flat, or just not right conditions where you usually go....
So I guess what im asking is, does anybody have any standout pointers or qualities that they look for in a spot for fishing for tailor during the day?
Better yet, does anybody know some good stretches known to hold the toothies during the day? Ie, stretches of beach or something that actually have something to hold the fish there...
Or is this a fallicy question and no matter what, unless its just a blue moon thing, the tailor just cant be had during the day because theyre too far out.

Demersal Tagging
Submitted by Dean on Thu, 2007-11-08 17:02After seeing pictures of Andy and Tim tagging a number of different demersal species, We were just wondering how you go about getting the required equipment/permissions to tag Demersal species, would give us a chance to tag many of the undersize fish we catch and release.
Tried a google and didn't come up with anything
Cheers

Reel information required
Submitted by Colin Hay on Wed, 2007-11-07 09:38I know it is probably a question you have discussed countless times, but your assistance would be greatly appreciated.
After cutting back my fishing activity for the past 15 odd years to raise my two daughters on my own, I am now able to get back into my other love, fishing.
While, I have been able to keep my hand in with a very occassional fish using pretty much the same gear I has 20 years ago, it really seems that fishing technology and ideas have really passed me by.
Since I signed up to this great site a few weeks ago I have read the various posts and comments on tackle and technics and it has left my mind awash with fantastic information and great images of where I want to take my fishing to.
The stories I have read about plastics, using braid and other items which are now common place but were never heard of when I was regular angler are just mind boggling.
Unfortunately I now have information overload.
One of the most obvious observations I have made is that I seriously need to upgrade my gear if I want to attempt the level of landbased fishing I would like to reach.
While I am reasonably ok for the moment with the rods I have, I desparately need to find a new spinning reel. My 25 year old Shimano has seen better days, and my newer threadlines just won't hack it if I manage to hook something decent.
I have read about Stradics, Stellas, Sustains, Spinfishers, SOLs, etc and they all sound fantastic.
I am looking to buy myself a new spinning reel for Xmas to fish from rocks, Groynes, beaches etc. for mulloway, tailor, etc.
I fish reasonably light - 15 kg line maximum mostly.
Unfortunatley my budget will only be between $300 and $400 (still putting my daughters through Uni and High School).
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Regards Colin Hay (an old rock fisherman trying to re-invent himself).

Ocean Geographic
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Mon, 2007-11-05 20:23G'day Guys,
Recently I have purchased the first 2 editions of the Ocean Geographic magazine and think they are superb and well worth a look for the $10.95. They release 4 a year and have stunning underwater photography, paintings, articles and environmental information from around the world. It is called the 'Almanac of Our Seas' and is more on the conservative side and only covers a little bit on fishing, more the commercial impact of fishing, but its images are awesome. The latest one has some brilliant sailfish, shark and coral pics too.
If you are in your newsagent, have a look, its pretty good!
Cheers,
Adam

How to work your stickbaits?
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Mon, 2007-11-05 19:57Just wondering what sort of action you guys use for stickbaits. Do you use a different action for a different species of fish and in different areas/conditions? (I would assume so) I have always used poppers and only just started getting into the stickbaits and have been using a flat out retrieve with some interest, but no hookups. I did have a solid coral trout follow it to the boat today, but couldn't get him interested again after then initial chase. :( I've only really used them 3 times and always in ordinary conditions. I've tried to adapt my technique on working them based upon general fishing principles and what I've seen from a few good fishing vids but it hasn't been overly successful to date. (It could always be the spot or fish not biting) Anyway, I thought I'd try and get some tips from those in the know. By the looks of the latest images I should just PM Scuttlebutt, but if anyone else has any handy info it would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Adam

Abrolhos Island charters
Submitted by Colin Hay on Mon, 2007-11-05 08:32My wife has agreed to pay for a fishing charter as a Xmas present. I am going to try and stretch it to a trip to the Abrolhos Islands. Does anyone have any knowledge about the various charters and have any recommendations on who may be good? I believe that most don't leave until after April. I would appreciate any assistance. I want to strike while the irons hot before my missus changes her mind.
Many thanks Colin Hay

Submitted by mike79 on Sun, 2007-11-04 19:56hey all i am a little disheartened in some peoples ethics on the water. I was fishing on my favourite spot at this time of year not another boat for at leasta kilometer. i had two rods going both of which were bent over most the time on sambos from 5 to 10kg. having fun a boat that must have been watching form a distance came right up next to me while im fighting the fish and pinged my sot on his gps. how rude is that. He then said looks like your having fun and i told him to well yeah nicely leave. and go find his own spots. The dude then proceeded to go around the front of my boat where my anchor was and pinged that too. i know the sot is not just mine and its a free world but to come from a distance away right up to me and then ping my spot is just dam right rude. at least i know the anger management courses are wrking because that guy still has his gps onboard his boat. im one for sharing soem spots with others but not in that way.

Starlo Stix 9' Shorespin - Anyone Used One?
Submitted by rickets on Sun, 2007-11-04 09:18Hey guys,
Im umming and ahhing over purchasing a starlo stix 9' shorespin... I know theyre a fantastic rod, so im not gonna ask for feedback of it's performance, rather, I wanna put the thought out there for opinions on what the maximum sized (daiwa or shimano) reel you would use with this rod would be?
A mate of mine uses a Stradic 6000 on his and however, when loadtesting the rod and whathaveyou, I put a 5500 sized daiwa reel on the thing and it felt a bit bottom heavy, but still usable...
Also, what would you say the absolute minimum reelsize would be for this rod? Anyone used 3000 sized reels at all on them? If so, how did it feel?
Im trying to decide whether its worth buying a surfcasting reel or just using my second spool on my TD Sol 3000 for the rod. Im looking for optimum casting distance using 30-40gram poppers using 20lb tuffline
