Best position on the boat for jigging?
Submitted by Goodz on Fri, 2010-09-17 18:02So when fishing with others who are "BAIT" fishing, where is the best spot on the boat to be jigging from to avoid tangles? Obviously depends on the direction of the drift, but should you be infront or behind the bait fisho's line? Back corner of the boat or forward?
It amazed me when fishing 50ft away up the bow of a charter boat at the Abrolhos I still managed to tangle with the bait fisho 9 people down at the back of the boat!
Any advice?

Too much power?
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Fri, 2010-09-17 12:01Thanks to PeteD for sending me this:
1,050 Horsepower In The Hands Of A Moron!!
I guess being able to buy it, doesn’t mean you can drive it.
37' 2010 Contender
Check out this Contender that "ran aground". Boat was only 6 hours old.
Operator claimed he was doing 28 knots. Both people on board were 100%
sober. Cost him $10,000 to have Tow Boat US pull him back to the water.
4 tow lines parted in the process. MSRP on the boat ranges from $300,000 to
$400,000 depending on options."

No Ban on Demersals This Year.
Submitted by Seaquest on Thu, 2010-09-16 14:45Just rang fisheries to see if I was allowed to target demersals during the ban on a catch and release bases. What a joke. The guy I spoke to wasn't aware of any ban this year or even last year. Thats right he wasn't aware there was a ban in place last year on demersals. So good news guys according to fisheries there isn't going to be a ban this year. If anyone can give me a contact number to speak to someone who knows what going on and not some peanut, would be much appreciated.
Cheers

Platypus mono: Platinum vs Low stretch
Submitted by cuthbad on Wed, 2010-09-15 17:55Anyone used both the platinum and the low stretch?
I have always used the platinum and rate it highly for a mid range mono with a fairly thin diamater. Im using the 50lb and thinking of making the switch to low stretch. the only thing stopping me is that its a little thicker. Platinum is .55 and i think low stretch is .6. Not a big difference but im wondering if it will be any harder to cast because of this.
Also is there any difference in knot strenth, abrasion resistance or anything else that anyone has noticed?
thanks

SA's blue manna crab limits
Submitted by Ben Derecki on Wed, 2010-09-15 14:14
How are these limits for blue mannas in South Oz. Be interesting to know a bit more about the science behind those first two points.
Blue swimmer crab rules at a glance:
• Daily bag limit of 40 per person (combined limits with sand crabs).
• Daily boat limit of 120 (combined limits with sand crabs).
• A minimum size limit of 11cm width measured across the carapace from the base of the largest spines also applies.
• It is illegal to take female crabs with eggs. These must be returned to the water straight away without harm.
• Recreational crab fishers are not permitted to sell or trade their catch.

Mobile patrols give Fisheries staff a colourful presence on State's beaches
Submitted by Colin Hay on Wed, 2010-09-15 09:41Fisheries Minister Norman Moore today unveiled the new 4WD fleet used by mobile compliance patrols that began operating in the middle of this year.
Six new land-based mobile patrol units were deployed in July as part of Western Australia’s revised recreational fishing management arrangements.
“The State Government has effectively quadrupled the number of mobile compliance units available across WA to monitor recreational fishing activity,” Mr Moore said.
“These mobile patrols will now have four-wheel-drives, equipped with high-tech communications equipment, to assist Fisheries and Marine Officers (FMOs) in general monitoring work.
“They will also help officers respond quickly to illegal fishing reports.”
Adding six mobile compliance patrols to the two already operating was a significant step, the Minister said.
“Government funding has enabled us to establish more mobile patrols and also to employ a further 13 FMOs this year,” he said.
“Some of the new FMOs are working on the eight dedicated mobile patrols that will operate across WA, from Kununurra to Esperance.”
In addition to reaching remote locations along WA’s coast or inland fisheries to check on activity, the mobile patrols would have a role in educating fishers about sustainability rules and reinforcing the fish for the future message.
“Both education and enforcement are important to help recreational fishers understand their impact on the marine environment and the balance needed to ensure WA’s fish stocks are protected for the enjoyment of future generations,” Mr Moore said.
“FMOs from the mobile patrols will check fishers have the appropriate licence and that they are fishing safely and not breaking any sustainability rules, like bag and boat limits, closed areas and more.
“About 72,500 new Recreational Fishing from Boat licences have been issued, since they were introduced on March 2 this year - which confirms that rec-fishers are contributing more to recreational fishing initiatives and better management of WA’s precious fish resources.”
Fishing licences are available through Australia Post or from the Department of Fisheries’ website and offices. There is more information at http://www.fishforthefuture.com.au. Details on the fishing rules that apply around the State are also online at http://www.fish.wa.gov.au

Where to fish?
Submitted by Josh on Wed, 2010-09-15 06:55Hi
My mate and I went halves in a old de-havilland Tempest 14 foot runabout and we have just put a 35 on the back. We were just wondering the limits of a boat of that size as we are new to the whole fishing from a boat game. The previous owner said that he had taken it out as far as rotto on numerous occasions, however we do not want to go past the limit and end up in the drink and loose our new pride and joy. We would also love to take it away north/south over summer but once again we do not know where we can take it. Also any tips for the setup of accessories would be sweet,
Cheers,
Josh

Rod for Softies
Submitted by Jody on Tue, 2010-09-14 18:38Alright, time to give it a bash.
I was thinking of trying some 7 & 10 inch McCarthys next weekend up in Jurien.
Unfortunately, I don't think any of my rods are really suitable, can anyone guide me in the right direction, and I definately don't want to spend a heap. Probably the only reel I have suitable would be the Salti z4500.
....and I promised not to buy anymore tackle this year ..... what a joke !!
