New funding to protect the Swan River

The State Government has committed another $3.3million on projects that aim to protect and preserve the Swan and Canning rivers.

Environment Minister Donna Faragher said the additional funding was part of the Liberal-National Government’s ongoing determination to improve the health of the Swan and Canning river system.

Mrs Faragher said $1million would be spent on another oxygenation plant for the upper reaches of the Canning River, while $800,000 would be spent on river restoration and erosion control projects as part of the Swan River Trust’s Riverbank program.

A big portion of the funding had gone to local government and community groups.

“This funding has been specifically targeted at projects that we believe can make a significant difference to improving the health of the waterways,” the Minister said.

“The Swan River faces many pressures, many of them historic and many of them induced by human activities. I believe the range of initiatives we are putting in place will help the Swan River to withstand these pressures.”

The funding includes $250,000 to begin to implement the recommendations of Chief Scientist Lyn Beazley’s report into the deaths of dolphins in the Swan River in 2009.

The other initiatives include:

· $300,000 to implement local water quality improvement plans, including projects such as living streams, nutrient stripping wetlands, fertiliser efficiency programs and compliance initiatives to control sediment and erosions. This will be targeted in the Ellen Brook, Bennett Brook and Canning Plains catchments

· $250,000 to undertake 800 audits of small and medium-sized businesses to ensure they are not contributing to the contamination of the river system

· $150,000 to help fund the removal of thousands of tonnes of sediment from the Avon River channel and to restore the foreshore in key river sections (as far east as Beverley)

· $100,000 for the Swan Landcare Program, which funds community projects that contribute to improved water quality, including revegetation and restoration work

· $100,000 to identify sources of non-nutrient contaminants so management responses can be taken

· $50,000 to undertake a weed eradication and planting program at Yule Brook and a riparian restoration program in the Ellen Brook catchment

· $300,000 across two years to run a River Rangers program for primary school students interested in preserving and protecting Perth’s waterways.

Mrs Faragher said the new oxygenation plant would help maintain oxygen concentrations at a level that promoted and maintained a healthy environment for aquatic plants and animals.

It would supplement two existing plants that oxygenate 2.3km of the Canning River, upstream from Kent Street Weir, by treating the area between Mason’s Landing in Cannington and Hester Park in Langford.

The Minister said oxygen levels needed to be above four mg/L, but often dipped to below two mg/L in the Swan and Canning rivers in summer.

“Low oxygen levels in the rivers are caused by a breakdown of organic matter, such as leaves and debris,” she said.

“It is often a problem in the Swan and Canning rivers in summer, due to the warmer conditions.

“By increasing oxygen levels, the health and amenity of the river will improve, providing a better habitat for fish and other aquatic life and assisting in safeguarding the rivers against severe storm events.”

The Swan River Trust will investigate the most appropriate oxygenation technology for the Canning River before choosing a supplier for the third plant.

Mrs Faragher said River Rangers would be a pilot program run through Cadets WA.

“River Rangers will give primary school students a chance to be involved in fun and constructive activities that reinforce the importance of protecting Perth’s waterways,” she said.

“Staff from Cadets WA will work with the Swan River Trust to administer the program.”

The Minister said State Government funding for the Swan and Canning rivers was making a significant difference to improving the health of the waterways.

Other recently announced initiatives included:

· new limits on the amount of phosphorus contained in ‘home garden’ fertiliser

· $3million to install an underground barrier to stop contaminated groundwater entering the Helena River at Bellevue

· $3.19million for the Swan Canning Water Quality Improvement Plan, which aimed to reduce nitrogen and phosphorus input from catchments into the Swan and Canning rivers. This included:

o $1.15million to rehabilitate the degraded Anvil Way drainage basin in Welshpool and create a new wetland

o $180,000 to apply a Western Australian-developed nutrient magnet to parts of the Canning River to block damaging algal blooms

· $600,000 for more than 35 on-the-ground projects to improve the quality of water entering the Swan and Canning rivers.

Possession Limits

Are there different rules re: possession limits in different parts of the state?

I was always under the impression that there's a 20kg possession limit per person except in Exmouth, where it's 10kg's.  Am I right?

Also, do you need a RFBL for each person's possession limit?

Also, where is this stipulated?

Thanks

why do the smaller river fish not get many comments yet you bluewater fisherman get them all the time?

Look im as new as the next bloke but from what ive seen only a small minority actually give a damn about the guys that fish the south metro rivers, would be nice if all of us got some nice comments, it is a forum after all, hate me or like me, im a fisherman and when i post something and get maybe 1 or 2 comments it makes me wonder why i bother posting, be fair people, its like high school again, got the popular guys then the nerds and not forgetting the guys that just want a bit of advice and dont even get a squeek, im not expecting to get any response from this coz im a nobody, im not in the popular group. SO MUCH LIKE HIGH SCHOOL!

Metro Whiting and a Trawler

On the Sunday 25th April coming back from Rottnest I saw a Pro trawler with his booms out around the 32 mts contour line,I saw a mate who had been out the Saturday and saw the same boat operating in much the same area,West of Double view water tank.I went out on Friday last week and tried for some whiting on the grounds were I have caught them in the past,I got 5 and that was after trying several spots (at least )7I did get several very small Flat head some about 6"inches long and some 2inches long, the smallest I have ever got, but,I saw the same Pro Trawler ,,with its booms out doing runs from South too North and back and although I did not go all that close by using the Cmap on my gps I saw he was working the sand. Now I do not know if it is just me but it seems strange that the whiting seem to have almost dis appeared? I asked my mate who had been out the previous Saturday, they got 12 between three fishermen Is it possible that the trawler is netting up the whiting on Perths recreational fishing doorstep I know for a fact that they used to 5/10 years ago,but I thought the netting had been banned in this area.My question is,Has any one else seen this trawler,in the area from Scarborough Observation city building to North of Hillarys marina working in the 30/35 contour line.Has anyone else noticed a sudden decrease in the whiting and the size of them?or is it just me who is not able to find fish that I could a few weeks back guarantee catching?jerseySurprised

Fishing over night

Hi All

been getting different reports about staying out over night in regards to bag limits.

some people telling me that you are allowed 2 because daily limits are from midnight to midnight.

others are telling me you are allowed 1 unless you are camping over night on an island.

both groups of people have claimed to talked to fisheries directly.

can any one shed any light on the subject.

Leeman crayfishing industry

Someone asked about the cray fishing situation in Leeman a few weeks back and after chatting to a few people I can advise (sorry I forget who it was).

There are still about a dozen active boats out there and this year has been a great year. There are heaps of good sized adult crays but there are big concerns as there are not many juveniles around so they are expecting slim pickings in the future.

I saw two boats come in at Coolimba - the first one had 4 crates and the second 8 crates.

Speaking to the lady helping to unload - the bloke with 8 crates had the same the day before. Those 8 crates produced 243kg of Cray @ $42 per kilo.

Not bad for a days work - but I guess you have to consider a limited season and big expenses.

Anyhow, things are good up that way...for now.

Contender or Pretender? Omoto Severo 5000

Some of you guys would have heard of Alan Hawk...  Hmm Alan Tani too, what is it with reel guys all being called Alan?

Here it is anyway; Omoto Severo 5000: The Review.

Not all of us need, or can afford Saltigas or Stellas, and this is a fairly critical, but not necessarily negative, review of one of the cheaper alternatives. Certainly sounds like a much better alternative than some of those other awful overpriced alternatives available from a certain Australian manufacturer^H^H^H^Hrelabeler.

I certainly like the special ops colour scheme although if it was that parkerised finish that Accurate were using, now that really would be something!

LOST MY ANCHOR

only been out in my new boat about 10 times.snapped anchor rope trying to drive it off(stupid!)last time was out. was going to try the method of attaching chain via bow shackle to prong end of reef anchor then attaching chain via cable tie to top eye of anchor.Has anyone had any experience with this method or is it a waste of time? thanks

Fishin was very slow today

Fished out of Rockingham - Point Peron

What a top day!!!

Went for a fish out off bunbury today while all the good people were working.

Searched for some new ground to the north. Found a few lumps and bumps. It didnt really look like much on the sounder but it must have been enough.

2 personal bests. a Dhu and a SBT. Got a squid and a good size cuttlefish and a few other small reef fish.

Hooked up big time on the 30lb spin gear and lost 100 metres of line in no time. Was on for a good 10minutes and the leader rubbed through. was obviously a shark. I was no where near in control of the fight and Iam guessing it was a big fish.

Yeh I know they are dead fish photos but only because I forgot to take the camera..

Did a 40 Nm round trip and the new/old rebuilt boat went beautifully!!

And to top it off I get home early and the missus has scored some Metallica tickets for October!!!!!signed sealed but not quite delivered. F@#k yeh!! Iam so extatic to be going to see the best band in the world do their thing!!

So yeh a top day

Salmon

hey everyone. im going to be in Bunbury in about 30 days for SYG and i have the opportunity to do a few hours of fishing. im not sure were (town jetty i hear?)and ive never fished bunbury before, so what could i expect to catch? will salmon still be around?

What rod?

HI Guys & Girls

I recently got myself a Saltist 6500 and filled with 50lb braid now I am on the lookout for a rod, I intend for this outfit to be a bit multipurpose from trolling to poppering. I have only really looked at a monster mesh 8ft and a shimano GT Tcurve 8ft, I am fairly new to this heavy kind of fishing as prev I was mostly lure fishing for Bream with 1-2lb rods and 2-4lb line

Budget would be upto price of GT Tcurve, any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I know this is a fishing forum but unfotunately my last beach bash I got skunked and had no story to tell.   So I will have a go at all tha W.A. soft cock dudes in this state.

Channel 9 figures that you would all prefer watching a stupid movie about two chicks playing fags playin drag queens.   Than televise a NATIONAL I repeat NATIONAL game of league rugby!    This is sad!!! VERY VERY SAD!!!!   I can't believe this is happening.   I being a foreigner to this country has to fight for tha right to watch a NATIONAL team game. I think any dudes who would rather watch a shit movie over a live NATIONAL game should go hand their dude card in at tha dude centre and pick up yer lifetime membership to tha soft cock society!!!!   This game is being showed live in all other states.

GO THA KANGAROOS!!!! Sorry I can't support you in your win!!!

Now, this is fishing, or is it?
