Sounder Transducer positioning

Hi Guys,

I have a 19 Ft. fibreglass Guardian half cabin hull and cannot find a decent position to mount my sounder transducer. The boat has a stepped V type hull and to get the transducer into the clear part of the water at speed, it needs to be about 20mm below the hull, as the steps are about 100mm long and 10 mm deep, at a small 15 degree angle. This position works up to about 20 knots, then the display looks like a fish frenzy.....false reading though - also it creates a roostertail about 2 metres high that splashes over my motor and onto the rear seat passenger (wife and boat sponsor...). Any solutions available from similar experiences on this type of hull? Sounder is a 595c GPS/combo. Direct hull mount is not possible without serious mods as the boat has the sealed hull

TUTORIAL-ADDED PIC's make your laptop a powerfull marine chart plotter

I just thought i would post this as 'davey' asked the question the other day...

Making your laptop into a marine chart plotter is easy and cheap heres the steps to getting it all setup.

1. get your hands on a software called oziexplorer. (this is the actual gps software where you can do tracks, waypoints, speed etc.)

2. get your hands on marine charts in electronic format (jpeg,bitmap,...) there are several ways to do this 1) you can scan you marine charts or any maps for that matter and then convert the jpeg,bitmap... to the oziexplore image format using the software tool. 2)you can search for any maps (marine, road, or others) on the web and convert them as above. 3) you can by electronic format marine charts from DPI (what i did)

once you have your maps, if they are not in oziexplorer format simply convert them using the tool provided. once all maps are in oziexplorer format you open oziexplorer and configure them with the lat/long coordinates which are given on the corners of any map/chart (this is very easy to do and youtube has a good tutorial on how to do this)

3. get your hands on a usb gps reciever. i got mine off ebay for $50 its water proof aswell.

plug your gps reciever to your laptop and away you go. I am currently using this setup and it is infact very acurate, and provides details of speed, waypoints, routes and much much more. it is more powerfull then a standard marine gps other then the fact a laptop is not waterproof. with this setup your laptop can be a street plotter, marine plotter....etc

Hope this information can help those intrested in pc chart plotting..

New bottom bouncing rod/reel

Firstly I have to say of all the sites Fishwrecked is No1,congrats to everyone involved.Being a long time reader I thought Id better post something!

Curious to know what everyone is using bottom bouncing the deeper water say 50m to 150m, looking to purchase new rod and reel $$$ not really an

issue.Any input appreciated.

looking for some advice and opinions on rods and reels.

Well ive been saving the pennys and was going to buy a new surf rod but seeing as i dont enjoy that as much as i do rock hopping and fishing off the boat ( as i found out for the first time sunday :P ) ive decided to buy something more suited to a boat. Now im not sure what is better egg beater or overhead i used an overhead for the first time on sunday and didnt find it to hard to grasp but still find the egg beater easier but from what ive gathered overheads much easier for bottom bouncing now im looking at a price range of about 600 dollars wondering what all your opinions are on what i should get just to help out, im looking for a rod and reel that will be able to handle the decent size fish dont know if thats within my budget just one thing i want on an overhead reel is the auto leveler because im hopeless at thumbing line on.

what is your favourite squid jig size?

hey guys... what is your favourite/most used squid jig size?

for me, its 3.0 ( landbased)

A little fun with Carrot stiks and what next.

Reading Colins bit about his new nano fibre Carrot stik I thought what next. Maybe a Celery Stik. Just thought we could have some fun with what next and what we would call it. A Banana Bender etc.

I am sure we could come up with some funny names for nano technology rods.

Some fun because the wind is bloody blowing its box off up here and fishing is not on the cards offshore.

Good morning on the water.

Was lucky enough to get  to go out with bj and garbo on bjs boat (my first time on a boat) , was a productive morning with a steady catch of skippy and seargeant bakers nothing to impressive till bj landed what we assume to be a 30kg sambo was a big prick  thats for sure! afternoon was pretty unprodactive few skippy here and there i nabbed a small dhu fish and a blue devil fish and the garbo hooked onto an average dhu fish and brought it in overall had a great time and a lot of fun cheers bj and garbo!

Good morning at Hillarys

I took Doug and his son Stephen down to one of my favourite spots at Hillarys Marina this morning. What a cracker of a morning. Hardly any wind and blue skies - and the water looked perfect.

We arrived at about 5.45 am to find the Hillarys north wall pretty deserted apart from one guy fishing on the the disabled platform.

We headed out to my spot and soon started tossing chunks of mulie out in the hope that the skippy were around.

As per normal the action came on just as the sun was coming up and Stephen hooked a nice little pinky.

He was on fire after that and proceeded to land at least half a dozen small pinkies and twice that number in skippys - some of them a pretty decent size.

Doug did alright as well, landing a few small pinkies and three of or four skippy - all great fun on really light gear.

My normal, unweighted skipper killer rig was letting me down as it appeared that the fish were all feeding on the bottom, so once I twigged onto that and swapped to a running sinker rig I finally managed to land three skippy and a tarwhine.
None of them were all that big, but they were good fun on the new Carrot Stix I was testing for the first time.

What an awesome rod. It is so light, but can it throw a small bait a long way. Nice and strong for its size it is also extremely flexible and allows you to feel even the tiniest nudge from the fish.

We saw a number of interesting sites during the morning as well, including a sizeable seal which came straight up to the rocks we were fishing on and just sat offshore hoping we would throw it some fish. A resident Osprey also managed to grab one of the small pinkies Stephen had returned to the water before it could swim away.

There were heaps of boats heading out, including one poor bunch that didn't even make it of the harbour before having to be towed back.

All in all, a great morning. I can't wait to do it again.

All the best, Colin Hay

Has anyone tried a Carrot Stik rod?

They are made from 30% graphite and 70% nano carrot fibre.

I picked one up at the Tackle Shack today. It is one serious rod

I know it sounds crazy, but these rods have won numerous awards, including one at Icast.

I am going to give it a twirl tomorrow. I can't wait.

What should I save up for?

I have finally given up the “durries”, also known as the “coffin nails”, “oily rags”, “smokes”, etc.

So I am looking forward to having a bit of extra cash (At $12 a pack it should add up to a bit of extra cash).

I am putting the money I am saving into a special (aka secret, not known to the better half) account. What do you think I should save up for fishing gear wise.

All input would be apreciated, Colin Hay

Do Fish have colour vision

I looked at the bright pakula pusher Adam had with his blackie and it made me think. I am a science type person but with humans and i know that most animals apart from Primates dont see colours. I was wondering if anybody know if fish see colours or just patterns. Maybe the colour of lures is designed to catch us and not the Fish. I hope someone can answer this.

Alutecnos Jigging Rods... Which one ... and what reel?

I'm looking at buying another Jigging outfit. At the moment I have a Ryobi Metaroyal 5000A Safari spooled with 50lb braid on a Shimano Jigwrex S526. Absolutely awesome outfit but I want something lighter as well.
I have been looking at the Alutecnos jigging rods and see they have the FRJ006LG (6/12lb) that supports a spinfisher type reel and handles 80/170g jigs. They also have mainly overhead jigging sticks and if I was to go there the FRJ015SP (15/30lb) that handles 150/270g jigs looks ok as well.

My questions are:
1. Are the overhead jigging sticks (in this case the FRJ015SP (supports 150/270g jigs)as good as the ones designed for spinfisher reels? (eggbeater reels) If so, what would be a good reel to match to this stick? And where is my best place to buy this stick?

2.If I was to go with the FRJ006LG stick, (Supports 80/170g jigs) What would be the best reel to match this outfit and again, where would my best bet be in purchasing this rod? I'm rather inclined to go with this outfit but await members comments.
