Horrocks for Long Weekend
Submitted by Wannafish on Mon, 2014-02-24 18:14Hi all,
We are heading to Horrocks for the long weekend, and am hoping for any hints or tips on where we might be able to get a fish. We will be towing my 5m Quintrex centre console, and be there Fri night - Tues morn. The weather looks good, but the swell appears to be up a bit - I'm unsure how this affects things up there??
Thanks for any info anyone wants to share!!

What have you seen with this warm water?
Submitted by beau on Mon, 2014-02-24 17:08So what have you guys been seeing with this warmer water?
Goodz, hoookt and I got stuck into some shark mackerel yesterday. I had a double hookup on my boat and the amount of other sharkies that followed the hooked fish was incredible, wouldve been well over 50 fish swimming around the back of the boat.
5mins later we came across a nice big Manta Ray just chilling on the surface!
Was getting a reading of 23.5 degrees in that area.
So are you guys seeing anything unusual influenced by the warmer water yet?
Going by the maps looks like SOR is the place to be for our Northern visitors at the moment.

Saturdays effort
Submitted by Josh on Mon, 2014-02-24 15:03Ended up going for it on Saturday
Tookthe new tub out for her maiden salt water voyage, ended up putting in at Hillarys, about 8am, only one other boat launching, no que, went out to back of 3 mile, tried our luck on the troll to no avail due to getting weeded out so started a bit of a search for a lump. Found one and anchored slightly up wind of it. Started berley trail with pollard oil Premix and cubed mulies with a couple of frames in a mesh bag. Berly for about an hour, pull up half a dozen king wrasse and at least that many brownies. As well as a baby bullseye. One Mate's rod goes off then bust , 2 mins later other boys rod goes off and he's on! 10 mins later a dhu is on the surface to calls of 'get the net'. Oops we left the net at home. Ended up landing a 59cm dhu in a milk crate. Fished that spot a bit more and a couple other spots for a few more wrasse. Bait used was a quarter of a mulie. Came in nice and early packed away at home by 330!

Mandurah Prawn Trawler
Submitted by SpotHound on Mon, 2014-02-24 13:59There has been heaps of Mandurah prawns for sale and the fish shop says they get trawled out of the estuary not the sea.
How do they do that without destroying the weed beds and catching every crab insight?

Leader & Rig line size
Submitted by Tradewind on Mon, 2014-02-24 13:01Hoping to get some experienced input about this topic
I'm starting to venture further out with the Boat to FFB & Beyond and i've always favoured 80lb leader and use the same material for making the paternoster rigs when fishing deep
Lets just say while i'm learning to find spots and times I haven't been overly successful even with burleying or a selection of fresh baits.
On Sunday I headed out just before sunrise to the FFB from the southern edge of Garden Island.
I stop and throw the burley bucket over to about halfway down.
Ten minutes later and my deckie was onto a nice Pinkie about 65cm and again onto a smaller undersize model.
I'm using the same bait and hooks but where he's using 20lb i'm using 80lb braid to an 80lb leader with a paternoster rig made out of the same 80lb leader material and the only thing I managed was a skippy.
A little bit later I pulled out my light gear which has 20lb braid & leader and tie on a soft plastic and throw it out the back.
I kept it 3m off the bottom and about 20 mins later a 45cm dhuie gobbled it up
I'm believing it'd be fair to say that the fish can see the 80lb and i've been shooting myself in the foot by going that heavy and should scale back to 20lb or 30lb for bottom bashing.
Thoughts? Comments? Insults?

Boat Worker Recommendation
Submitted by elliotbirch on Mon, 2014-02-24 12:30Hi guys,
Just picked up our new boat and taken it out a few times and am stoked with it. Just a few things that I want to do to it are:
1. Get a few wrap around cushions upholstered for the back
2. Get a stainless steel Bimini made that is framed to the centre console
3. A custom bait board put into the rear
Are any of you guys able to recommend a good place that you think would be able to do all/most of this work? I'm presuming ill be able to get a better price if I can get it all done at one place.
Cheers!

Drum line bait
Submitted by Sand_whiting on Sat, 2014-02-22 19:47Hi guys,
What sort of bait they using? The photos attached looks like three herring or slimy macs threaded on a hook. Isn't that a bit light on for a big white?
Cheers, Charlie.

Hillarys Marina
Submitted by diver on Fri, 2014-02-21 20:15For those of you who use the Hillarys Marina A friend has just told me that due to the Boat show, there is going to be reduced parking for cars & trailers, also possible ristrictions to the launching ramps. If any of you feel strongly enough about this abuse of one of the few public ramps in the near northern suburbs,Yes ,I know we have Ocean Reef, and also Mindarrie, but with Two Rocks out of commissi0on atr the moment, there are a lot of boats using Mindarrie in particular.phone up (a) the Hillarys harbour master, and the Break sea cod aka Premier Barnett and tell them what you think, that is ,if you care enough.

New Navionics map upgrade.
Submitted by Jason P on Fri, 2014-02-21 19:21Just had my Navionics on my phone upgraded to Version 3.1 and then added on a new Advanced maps feature for $4.49 I think.
Anyway its pretty cool with new features designed for fishing in mind, and now can see a weed banks and underwater structure better than before with google. Check it out, might be impressed.
3 mile suggestions for tomorrow
Submitted by Josh on Fri, 2014-02-21 16:11G'day fellas
Toorrow is a green light for the first ocean voyage of the new boat, the rough plan is to launch at Hillarys, after all the rotto swimmers have left, go out, troll up and down the reef for a while, then anchor up and start up a nice berly trail a couple hours before the tide change and see if we can pull something up.
Any advice? All good ideas? For berly I have a couple of frames along with pollard, oil and premix, plus cubed mulies. I don't really have any trolling experience, was thinking of a couple of minnows and a halco twisty? I would love to get onto some of the tuna I've seen in the photos, or are they a long way out?
Cheers, and advice taken on, and a report with photos to come, even if its only photos of wrasse!

drum line capture
Submitted by Sand_whiting on Thu, 2014-02-20 19:28Hi Guys, Head someone today (greenie) saying that they reckon they caught a dolphin on a drum line of perth? I didnt hear it myself but according to my grandad they were reporting that a dolphin had been caught. Is this just some effort by people opposing the drumlines or is it infact true?
