Downriggers

Who has one and who uses them.

I know they are very popular for the freshwater guys but not as popluar on the salt.

I have one for my boat  a Canon, still to fit, but am looking at using it for some experimenting this year and especially in exmouth next year.

Any tips ideas etc?

Personally i think it could open up so many  new areas of fishing, and the possibilites endless.

Buffalo Beach Whale Guts

yesterday morning while driving about 1km north of Buffalo Beach(North of Bunbury) their was the remains of a whale, just keeping you guys informed. No swimming for me.

Wilbidanga

Wondering if anyone can help me with a couple of questions about that place Nth of Two Rocks, firstly,

A. Am I gonna have a reasonable chance of getting a decent tailor or mulla there? and

B. Is it okay to camp along there for the night with a fire?

Weather looks good for the weekend so it's either here or back up past Lancelin.

Broome does backflip

BROOME BACKFLIP ON DOLPHIN CULL CITY

BEATRICE THOMAS, The West Australian October 13, 2009, 2:25 am

Broome Shire Council is today poised to reverse a decision to sever ties with the Japanese town responsible for an annual dolphin cull, instead apologising for its actions and organising visits between the towns to "reinforce the relationship". Less than two months after resolving to end its sister city association with Taiji until it stopped the cull, a backlash from the local Japanese community has led three Broome councillors to support a new motion to be discussed at a special meeting this afternoon. The motion, signed by councillors Michael Albert, Nik Wevers and Chris Mitchell, "unreservedly apologises" to the Japanese community in Broome and Taiji for any disrespect caused by its hasty decision and lack of consultation. The motion also recommends inviting the WA Japanese consul- general to Broome, planning a delegation to Taiji to "reinforce the relationship" and investigating exchanges between the two towns in 2011 to mark the 30th anniversary of the agreement. The proposed new resolution, which reiterates the council does not condone the dolphin killings, was yesterday criticised by conservationists who said the council should stand by its first decision. But Cr Albert rejected suggestions it was a backdown. He said the council had failed to get the full story from the entire Broome community and rushed its original decision. Broome shire president Graeme Campbell would not comment other than to say "there's a strong chance" of the new motion being passed by the council.

Shark and whale off Floreat

The ABC is reporting that a 4 m plus White Pointer is chewing on a dead whale off Floreat right now.

My nightmare has come true

Well after six and a half months in the caravan in Exmouth, Karratha and Broome, the day I've been dreading has arrived....we've come back to Perth. What's with this weather? It's freezing. If there's a silver lining I have to go back to Exmouth in November to get or sell my boat so I'm sure there will be a day or two set aside for some more fishing.

Here's a photo of me offering my opinion on the first set of traffic lights I've seen since April.

I have to send out a huge thanks to Adam and Renae for all their help and company in Exmouth, and to Brad, Nicky and the girls who helped heaps in Karratha. The trip wouldn't have been half as long or anywhere near as much fun without them. There are heaps of other people- Jeffo, Joel, Gribbo, Gully, Ewan, Ozzy, DanW plus others who were great to fish and hang out with and made the trip as well.

Highlights of my trip were all the marlin and sailfish with Adam in Exmouth and my week at the Monties with Brad. I've got thousands of photos to sort through so will post a few of the unseen ones up in the future.

If anyone is thinking of doing a similar trip it is the best thing we've ever done. Hayley and I are both lucky we have jobs that let us travel but it's worth all the effort/saving/planning/dreaming for the reward of spending quality time in places most people only get to visit quickly.

Now that we're back in Perth, if anyone needs a decky or wants to collect a few crays soon just let me know. I'm always up for a fish or dive when I'm home and am pretty keen to have a spear off Perth too.

Fingers crossed that we can do it all again someday.

jigging and rovex

Alright peeps

Now a couple more questions.  Firstly jigging

I have aquired my self a few knife/butterfly jigs and am gonna use them in  couple of weeks when I go wreck fishing for pollack and cod, just wondered on the best way to 'work' them in the water, i know roughly but want some tips from the experts.

secondly rovex big boss 7500 reel.  It is available in my local shop and I am thinking about getting one for the said jigging to use with a specialist rod, I know they are made by jarvis walker and that they are not shimano or accurate etc.  But bear in mind i probably wont hook a sambo in the english channel and the worst it will come up against is a cod or pollack in the 5 to 15kg bracket.  So are they any good and will it cope.  The depth is up to 100 metres ish.

Cheers Rog

Hooked - dog fin tuna barotrauma?

Ok, So im watching some tv and theres a show called hooked and they were with some nz Boat designer and celeb fisherman in Aus I think in the coral sea. They were trolling lures and cameras going for dogfin tuna, some great shots but when they finally boated a est 1.5 mt 70kg tuna and went to release it, it was knackered with "a problem with its swim bladder from pressure differential after being brought up" isnt that barotrauma? So they haul the fish back on board after watching it flounder around on the surface in shark infested water (the other hookup got sharked). Their remedy? A release weight? No, They knife the swim bladder and let it go.  Is this a good way to deal with it over the release weight?  Or something because the fish was so large?

Also with all this stuff today on the forums about extra species being added to possibly make the v21 due to bycatch survival problems. How does the rest of Aus compare from us in legislation and education?

I dunno, straight after they went on a rant about dynamite fishing leading to habitat destruction enviro rant and they were trying to catch and release.  But what is the right way?

Bozos Competition - $150 lure giveaway

Hi Crew,

Phil from Bozo's has generously donated a lure package worth $150 for me to giveaway.   I'm going to split it up into 2 sections - $75 worth of bozo's lures. Each will get a FW shirt, a hat and sticker.

So, the way its going to work.

1) One section of the competition will be for the LONGEST fish landed on a Bozo's lure (placed on brag mat with measurements clear, fish's mouth closed and at the end of the mat as you would for keeping a fish)

2) The other section will be for the BEST PHOTO of a fish caught on a Bozo.  (as judged by the members like the POTM competitions)

To make it fair for the Perth guys who have bans coming in, this competition also includes samsonfish, YTK, mackerel etc, everything not on the banned list.

Please label your entries for eg. - Bozos competition - Matt's Sambo etc -

You can get your bozo's lures at The Tackleshack or Oceanside or online at : bozos.com.au

The competition will run to the end of November and I be continually pushing it up to the top to keep it in your minds.

Cheers,

Adam

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

WA Sinker Supply release New FE Model Release Weight.

WA Sinker Supply release New FE Model Release Weight.

Due to the short supply of lead ( and its increase in cost) the guys at WA Sinkers who manufacture the soon to be compulsory Release Weight have come up with a slightly cheaper but equally effective FE Model. I believe it’s made of iron (steel) and zinc dipped .....soon to be available in three sizes. Supply won’t be a problem so no excuses not to have one or two on board by the 16th of December 2009....

Would even make a great Christmas present for all the boat angler’s in the family

edit....sorry my mistake on the supplier

How will your fishing be affected during the demersal bans?

With the ban coming into effect at the end of the week, I thought I would start a thread to see how people are going to be fishing during the bans.

Are you going to cut down on your fishing effort, maybe give some landbased fishing a bit more of a crack, or head out just as often and target some species you dont often target (maybe on the ocean, or maybe in the rivers and dams)? Maybe some try for species you havent targetted before, head up north/down south or perhaps the ban wont affect you much at all if you're allready targetting those species, or are mostly a land based fisho?

I'm sort of looking forward to it as hopefully I'll get a chance to learn more about targetting some other species on a boat. Would be good to go jigging for pre-season sambos, or just get some whiting and squid. Would be nice to knock a KG off my target list too. Will have to see what opportunities present themselves.

GOTCHA

From the Daily Mail, UK.

How far would you go to grab yourself a bite to eat?

This
is the moment when a pair of bottlenose dolphins decided that two heads
were better than one as they teamed up to snare a salmon.

Scottish photographer Alistair Kemp was amazed when the hungry duo leapt out of the water chasing their unfortunate prey.

Two bottlenose dolphins chase a salmon

Catch me if you can: The two dolphins have a little bit of fun as they toy with their prey

Two bottlenose dolphins chase a salmon

The playful pair appeared to be
having quite a lot of fun with their quarry and there was no escape for
the salmon, despite its best efforts.

The
slippery customer kept the two dolphins amused as they dodged each
other in the Moray Firth, Scotland, but ultimately, it was time for the
salmon to admit defeat and fulfil its destiny as dolphin food.

Gotcha: It's game over for the unlucky salmon as one of the dolphin finally grabs his prize

What is it?

Anyone know what this is?  I caught it on a handline in indonesia a few years back?

Cheers rog

Coitus Interruptus

Hi all

From my limited reading it is only the pink snapper and possibly the Dhue that participate in this most pleasureable experience during this closure period. I fully agree that if they want to let them do it in private  we should leave them behind closed doors to create more. But I cant see evidence that all the other banned species perform this nuptial duty during the closed time.

Wouldnt it be nice if we could span the breaks according to when the fish is fecund (randy) species wise. Then a blanket would not be so bad.

More science is needed no matter how we hate that (I am a science minded critter) or else help me in my wrong ways.

Lets not interupt their coitus but let science get behind this and find out when they perform nuptials (for you youngster Bonk) and per species ban these periods.

Then all hell on Earth dont happen at the same time!!

Oh shit!

More politics.
