What is the best 10ft+ spin rod for metro rock hopping/beach casting for tailor, skippy, herring?
Submitted by Dasho on Wed, 2009-10-07 07:45Howdee gang.
Can you recommend a light weight 10ft+ spinning rod for metro rock hopping/light beach casting?
I use a Nitro distance spin 7', but I'm sick of dragging the fish up the rocks instead of lifting.
The rod has to be light weight to hold all day, 2 pieces and sensitive enough to cast a berly cage to catch gardies or a small sinker rig for sand whiting. The biggest fish it will be used to catch is a tailor.
Thanks for your help.
Up to $350 max.

Poddy Mullet for Bait
Submitted by UncutTriggerInWA on Tue, 2009-10-06 19:32I cruised into a local outdoor place today to fill the gas bottle and snuck in for a quick look at the tackle section (my wife would kill me). They had some 500kg bags of Poddy Mullet bait for sale and they looked just fantastic. Quite fat and plenty of blood. A bit the size of small Mullies.
Has anyone used these baits? On face value, they look great.
MY modus is land based and I generally use Mullies or the like. This is the first time I have come across Poddy Mullet.

wagoe 2/10/09
Submitted by sloppyjoe24 on Tue, 2009-10-06 18:36
went for a quick weekend trip up to wagoe. arrived friday night around 6pm and set up camp
decided to head out for a quick fish, and ended up with an ok 47cm tailor. driving back to camp i bumped into sails4me off this site and had a quick chat, they had a few bustoffs and landed a couple tailor also.
saturday morning early rise, and it was fairly quiet, lots of small fish about picking at the bait, a couple casts later had a skippy and the biggest herring i've ever seen!! all quiet again the WAM the line was screaming off the real and i caught a big flash of silver just behind the waves... a short fight later and my hopes of a nice mullaway dashed as 12kg of solid sambo slid up the beach. a pleasant surprise as its a first for me so it made my trip. after that i got a huge flatty (60cm) and then it shut down.
later that night with quite a few bevvies in between with matt and the other guys i met up there, we joined forces for a night fish and put a small dent in the tailor population wwith the best going around 2kg, other than that there was a couple bust offs n plenty of beer flowing.
the next morning the swell picked up and the beach was pretty unfishable. along with that on saturday we crossed paths with fishing wa crew who picked up a few midday tailor. all in all had a great trip

Newby-want to fish at exmouth
Submitted by Berniek on Tue, 2009-10-06 17:16Hi All
Decided we wanted to go to Exmouth and while searching for info, found the site & joined up.
Currently live in Canberra (you bxxtards sent the politicians so don't blame us)
Getting pretty close to retiring.
Done a bit of game fishing & bottom bouncing. Got a 6metre Carribean Reefrunner (old one) 200hp Mercruiser set up for gamefishing. Normally fish out of Bermagui NSW.
Have a smaller 4.55 metre alloy with 50hp honda 4 stroke for travelling long distances. (Took it to Cape York). Took the Reefy up to Queensland but its not suitable for beach launching or across the rocks
Have stayed out on the outer reef off the whitsundays in Queensland in the Reefy. Camped on Hook Island for 6 weeks with the reefy moored out the front.
Have LOTS of questions.
Whats the story with the points I see when I log in.
Whats the rules for the fishing comp (like the sound of it so far as long as its not too serious)
When is the best time both fish & weather wise?
We will be camping so are there preferred Caravan parks/spots at Exmouth.
Will the camp grounds handle dogs? (if we don't take the dog we become time limited
)
On the way up from Perth (yep at this stage its drag the boat from Canberra probably the little one) are there other places worth a look.
I keeping with all fisherman I really hope I am making you green with envy

Ryobi Safari Metaroyal?
Submitted by danryan on Tue, 2009-10-06 10:02Hi
Looking for any feedback on the Ryobi Safari Metaroyal 5000A. They're a bit dated now, but the Japanese manufactured reel is considered by many to the fore-runner of todays Stellas and Saltigas. Since Ryobi sold their fishing division, these reels are now made in China, and are available at a reasonable price.
Anyone used one recently?

Conservationists push for marine sanctuaries off WA coast
Submitted by bod on Tue, 2009-10-06 08:51
A group of Australian and international conservation organisations have launched a campaign urging the Federal government to create large marine sanctuaries off the WA coast to protect Australia's unique marine life and prevent toxic oil spills such as the one off the Kimberley coast.
Save Our Marine Life, a collaboration of eight conservation organisations including the WWF and the Australian Conservation Foundation have written an open letter to the chief executives of oil and gas companies, calling on them to publicly support the establishment of large marine sanctuaries.
In a full page advertisement in The West Australian newspaper today, Save Our Marine Life also urges people to sign an online petition urging the government to protect Australia's marine life.
The organisation claims less than 1 per cent of Kimberley seas are protected despite being among the most pristine in the world.
In the letter, the organisation say the oil spill off the Kimberley coast is one of the worst in Australia's history.
"For six weeks oil has polluted WA's precious Kimberley waters and your industry cannot guarantee another disaster like this will not happen again. Your industry is expanding throughout this sensitive marine region. Yet you remain silent in protecting the globally significant marine wildlife reeds and corals of the Kimberley and North West from further damage,"
Oil has been spewing from the stricken West Atlas oil rig in the Timor Sea since August 21. Oil firm PTTEP Australasia are hoping to plug to plug the leak by midweek.
Save Our Marine Life said the "globally significant" south west waters off WA with its abundant sea life is in desperate need of protection. The organisation said that with less than one per cent of the region protected, the marine sanctuaries would create "national parks in the sea" that would protect marine life and help replenish fish stocks.
Minister lifts fishing ban threat hanging over anglers at Green’s Pool
Submitted by Colin Hay on Tue, 2009-10-06 08:50(THIS MAY BE GOOD NEWS IN THE FIGHT TO STOP A FISHING BAN AT YANCHEP LAGOON TOO).
Fisheries Minister Norman Moore today ruled out prohibiting fishing at Green’s Pool near Denmark on Western Australia’s southern coast.
In April this year, the Department of Fisheries called for public submissions on whether fishing should be banned along 600m of beach and headland at the popular tourist and swimming destination located about 15km from Denmark.
Mr Moore said that Green’s Pool, a major tourist attraction in the William Bay National Park, was popular almost year round for swimming or fishing because it was protected from prevailing weather and current conditions by a surrounding headland.
But he said conflict between different users of the marine area around Green’s Pool had prompted him to ask for advice on whether fishing should be banned.
It was previously suggested that the presence of fishers, as well as fishing hooks and other tackle left behind or lost in the water, was dangerous to swimmers, snorkelers and beach visitors.
“The Department of Fisheries carried out a thorough assessment of the submissions,” the Minister said. “Part of the department’s advice was that the Denmark Shire Council did not have the relevant legal powers to regulate fishing within the William Bay National Park.
“I have decided not to prohibit fishing at Green’s Pool and instead will write to the William Bay National Park Authority asking it to work with the Denmark Shire Council to educate the public about the conflicting needs of fishers and other users of the area.”
Mr Moore said the department had received 65 responses to its call for public submissions, 49 for prohibiting fishing at Green’s Pool, 13 against the prohibition and two submissions - from the WA Industry Fishing Council and the Department of Environment - neutral.
“It should be noted that most submissions supporting the ban were from individuals wanting Green’s Pool to be a marine sanctuary rather than to address the issues of conflict and swimmer safety,” he said.
“I believe that with the proper signage and by encouraging anglers to restrict their fishing activities when swimmers are around, most of these conflicts will resolve themselves.”

guaranteed fish magnet
Submitted by bod on Mon, 2009-10-05 13:26October 05, 2009 12:01am
THEREwas a barely audible explosion, a puff of grey smoke and in about two minutes the decommissioned Australian naval warship HMAS Canberra sank beneath the waters off Victoria's coast.
The 138 metre former guided-missile frigate acquired by Victoria in 2006 will now become a much sought-after dive site 30 metres below the surface.
The ship's sinking on Sunday was a long time coming for scuba diving enthusiast John Lawler, who established the Victorian Artificial Reef Society in 2006 to lobby for the navy frigate to be sunk in the state's waters.
"As a scuba diver, I'm extremely excited about diving on a wreck like this," the 66-year-old said after watching the ship go down about 3km off Barwon Heads on the Bellarine peninsula.
"From a scuba diver's point of view, it's like Christmas," he said.
He said the wreck would soon be teeming with fish as it began its transformation into an artificial reef.
Mr Lawler, from Beaumaris in Melbourne's southeast, said he couldn't wait to inspect the underwater playground.
"As soon as it's open, if the weather's fine, myself and some of my diving buddies will be out on the site as quick as we can."
About 16 charges located in the ship's hull were detonated about 2pm (AEST) on Sunday, creating a soft popping noise and a puff of grey smoke.
Water flowed through pre-made holes in the ship and it sank in about two minutes.
The 4100 tonne frigate went down in an area of Bass Strait inhabited by about 46 other wrecks, known as the Ship's Graveyard.
The HMAS Canberra was originally scheduled to be scuttled on September 12 but the event was postponed because of poor weather conditions.
On Sunday the ship was expected to be sunk about 9am, but difficulty towing it to its destination slowed the process.
Commercial clearance divers were expected to survey the wreck once it had settled later on Sunday to ensure all the charges had detonated.
Moorings will then be installed by Parks Victoria before the government opens the site for divers, in about a month's time.
Built in 1978 and launched two years later, the frigate served Australia for 24 years before it was decommissioned in 2005.
It served in the Middle East following the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq in 1992 and helped evacuate Australians from Jakarta in 1998 during the student riots that deposed Indonesian president Suharto.

Trout season begins in Snowy
Submitted by Colin Hay on Mon, 2009-10-05 09:39There has been a big influx of anglers to the New South Wales Snowy Mountains for the opening of the trout season over the holiday weekend.
The recreational fishing industry injects about $70m a year into the Snowy economy and supports 700 jobs.
It supports a year-round tourism industry with anglers visiting the region from across Australia.
The Labour Day long weekend sees the end of the trout spawning period and the beginning of fish stocking programs.
A total of about 1,500,000 trout and salmon fry have been released across the State's waterways, with another 2,000,000 due before the end of the season in June next year.

Sea Rescue
Submitted by Clewesy on Sun, 2009-10-04 20:11Went out fishing friday morning for my last chance to catch a dhue before the cut off date as I'm heading to Bali with the family and when I get back its the day after the cut off.
It has an inboard mercruiser that I serviced 2 days prior to going out and ran it for half hour to make sure all was good. It was running like a dream as normal and the motor has been trouble free for the 880nm travelled since I have owned the boat.
I was heading out when trouble hit. One of the coolant hoses blew and I shut her down to inspect. I carry tools and some parts with me on the boat but not a coolant hose.
For the first time ever I had to get hold of base to get the Busselton sea rescue boat to come out and tow me in. I was inpressed with the way they handle situations like this with the questions asked and the way they responded. I was on ancor and in no danger but they still were out there in no time at all considering that they were called out from home, organised the boat and in the conditions of the ocean the time to get to me. I was very impressed at the service for all us boaties and im not sure if anyone has been in a situation that they have needed to use the Sea Rescue, but I'm very glad that they are there just in case.
Thanks to all Sea Recue volenteers on this site and yes it has inspired me to volenteer here in Busselton.

Does anyone know where WA tailor migrate to
Submitted by Colin Hay on Sun, 2009-10-04 18:05Uncle Stu and I were having a discussion on the migratory patterns of the west coast tailor and we couldn't work out where they end up.
My understanding is they head north to around Shark Bay,growing bigger and bigger as they go - hence the monsters that have been caught up that way - but I don't know what happens to them after that.
On the east coast I think they migrate to around Fraser Island and then head east. I am not sure where they go to from there though.
Do tailor only grow to a certain size and pass on? Or do they head to some secret destination?

Bobo's most excellent adventure
Submitted by Colin Hay on Sun, 2009-10-04 14:39Having found a gap in his busy social calendar, Bobo - Uncle Stu's fiesty Fox Terrier - decided to join us this morning on an expedition to Flat Rock.

After leaving Perth in total darkness, we arrived at Flat Rock on dawn to find it was one of those perfect spring mornings. A light breeze, glassy blue water and a solid little wave, which all suggested we should be okay to get into a few nice tailor.
After losing a good fish second cast, Uncle Stu soon got the ball rolling when he landed a very healthy 44 cm tailor. Bobo, as is his nature, went into raptures and made a bee line for the fish as it was washed up in the waves. Happily he managed to dodge around the fiercely snapping fish without losing his nose.

While Stu and I both lost solid fish after this, it was quite obvious that the tailor were moving in and out of the hole we were fishing in and it was just a matter of perserverance before we hooked up solid again.
That was the case when Stu connected to a very solid fish which bit through his line just as he was bringing it into the wave area.
Finally I managed to entice a big run of my own and after taking extra care getting the fish through the shore break I had a twin of Stu's tailor - about 44 cm and very thick in the body.
The bite then went a bit quiet before I felt a pecking at my bait. It definately wasn't a tailor smash and grab hit, and I was just thinking it might have been a herring when the weight came on and the fish started ripping line from my Stradic. This was definately no herring.
After a good solid fight, the fish tired quickly and I was able to drag it up the beach quite easily, until Bobo decided he wanted a piece of the action. Stu quickly called him away when we saw that the fish was a very sizeable and very angry snook/pike with some serious dentures.
We eventually calmed Bobo and the fish down and the latter measured in at a very respectable 82 cm.

That was about it for the fishing action as we had to head back to town.
It was an awesome morning - the weed situation was a bit difficult but far better than it has been on the northern metro beaches over the past week - but the weather was nigh on perfect and the company was first class. Thanks Bobo for inviting me along.

Submitted by AmericanBen on Sun, 2009-10-04 13:35Thinking about taking the boat up for a week in Nov or Dec but a little worried after reading some of the latest postings. Couple of questions; is this a good time of year? what are some inexpensive options for lodging? is anyone else interested? Do any local fishos desire to take us under the wing for a free outing? During Nov/Dec are there any closer options that offer some good fishing? Also plan on spending some time snorkeling as well. Cheers, ben

Submitted by Craig Pearse on Sun, 2009-10-04 10:46Well the team was called Benny and the Jets and the 2 jets fished well. The plan was to get some nice mackies to get the account open and within 2 hours to trolling Di caught a 11.4 lb and Shelley got a 9.6 lb mackie( those weights are after they were both gilled and gutted, comp rules). We went to go for some bottom fish when the rod screamed off both on the girls wanted nothing to do with this one and just about to be spooled ,snap!. She would have been a cracker of a mack, but thats fishing. Got to one of my bottom grounds ( 32m) with not much luck . Small reds ,snapper and 1 big arse cod. Di pulled up the only trout 56cm.In all the girls had a great day and the fished well, it was my pleasure to skipper, deckie, do rigs up , put bait on and pull anchor LOL

Rockingham Marina gets EPA go-ahead
Submitted by bod on Sat, 2009-10-03 17:13The planned profusion of marinas along Perth's coastline took another step towards reality yesterday with the Environmental Protection Agency approving the 500-pen Port Rockingham development.
The $40 million project is one of five marinas planned between Ocean Reef in the north and Port Kennedy in the south which would provide at least 2000 moorings. It would address the State's chronic shortage of recreational boat pens along the metropolitan coast.
The EPA's report said the Port Rockingham development would not have a significant impact on marine plants or animals, mainly because there were no seagrass meadows in the area.
EPA chairman Paul Vogel said the marina's construction would impact temporarily on local water quality and part of Cockburn Sound near the development should be monitored during building work.
He said the finished development would not cause algal blooms or other water quality issues because its rock breakwater would be open at both ends, allowing rapid water movement.
A spokesman for Rosewood Grove, the developers of the Port Rockingham proposal, said he hoped construction could begin before the end of next year.
"The Port Rockingham development will provide an iconic destination for tourists and local visitors," he said.
Conservationists said it was important not to approve too many marinas in sensitive areas that were home to vulnerable marine life, such as Penguin Island, not far from Port Kennedy's planned new boat ramp.
WA Conservation Council spokesman David Mackenzie said new marinas could lead to "a dramatic increase in local fishing as a result of skyrocketing boat ownership".
He urged the Government to implement a network of marine sanctuaries, to avoid species extinctions as a result of sudden increases in human activity in waters around marinas.
Mr Mackenzie also criticised the approvals process, saying it "does not look at the cumulative impact" of a string of new marinas.
"It is incredibly surprising that in 2009 we still have an approvals process that looks at these elements in isolation," he said.
A study published earlier this year showed that Cockburn Sound had one of the worst records in the world for conserving seagrass.
Mr Mackenzie said it was confusing that marinas were being approved at the same time that Fisheries Minister Norman Moore was introducing new licence fees to curb the damage done by recreational fishing.
