Fish Preference

i was wondering what type fish most people prefered for eating,  IE if there was only one type of fish left to be caught  for table quality and choice what would your preference be

Mine is,  Rankin Cod, great for all aspects of cooking and extremely enjoyable to eat , catching them is another issue .

soft plastics and lures!

EDIT*

Well im looking to try some softplastics and lures looking for any help i can get!

I generaly fish the collie river for bream not having much luck with the frozen baits so im looking at trying some softplastics not so keen on lures due to it being so snaggy not to keen on the idea of losing lures.

Also i fish the beach and rocks for herring, skippy, salmon, tailor, and estuaries for flathead.

Wondering if anyone could recomend some good lures, soft plastics or poppers to try.

Also what to look for when looking for a good spot to fish with them on.

not asking for your fishing spots just so i can look at a place and work out if its the right habitat for fish thanks for any help you can give me

North Mole

Hey guys,

was down at North Mole early this morning n by the time the sun rose the whole mole was filled with fishos bout 200 plus...

majority chasing snapper and mulloway... any1 get any?? i only found skippy and herring. cnt complain tho got a massive feed for me and the cats.. any1 have any luck with the pinkies or mullas??

Hillarys hit out

I popped down to Hillarys this morning just before dawn hoping the wind might have blown some big fish in close to shore.

It was a bit blowy early, but dropped off at about 7 am. I ran into Uncle Stu, who was cleaning up on herring at the disabled ramp, and suggested he join me at the lighthouse.
Only had a short session, but managed a nice little 30 cm pinky, three good skippy and a very small flathead.

Uncle Stu landed a great skippy on his herring gear.

It was only a short sharp session, but lots of fun.

Sorry I didn't take any pics as I decided to leave my camera at home with the rain threatening.

original hand-carved, painted, signed, and numbered Fred Young 'Big-O' crankbait #2065

I have an original hand carved and signed by Fred Young balsa "Big-O"

crankbait. It was given to my grandfather by Fred himself at Calvary

Baptist Church in Oak Ridge Tennessee. Both Fred and my grandfather

were deacons there. It is also the church I grew up in. This lure has

been in a box, unused for over thirty years. My mother recently found

it. It is in excellent condition, and has never been in the water. I

contacted Pradco (Cotton Cordell) and spoke to someone named Ryan. He

said they would probably be very interested in the crankbait, and that

he wanted to contact his bosses first, then someone would be calling

me. Apparently they are assembling some type of museum exhibit and he

felt they may want it for that. I have contacted a few other

professional anglers and/or bass magazine editors, but haven't gotten a

definate answer yet. But I just started contacting people yesterday. My

quesion is...does anyone out there know what it's actually worth, and

would anyone be interested in buying it. I believe we have two more

somewhere, but so far I have only found the one. I believe Bobby Murray

(the man who originally knew Fred and brought the lure to Cordell

initially) is one of the people Ryan was going to contact. We're trying

to find something out about it before we have to talk to these people

from Pradco. I'd apprecitate any help! Thanks!! Gary My phone number is

Fish habitat protection area expanded at Point Quobba

Fisheries Minister Norman Moore today announced that from early next month an expanded restricted zone would apply at Point Quobba’s Fish Habitat Protection Area (FHPA).

Mr Moore said increasing the restricted zone followed a community-driven initiative to better protect fish and the coral reef and lagoon system, which is a popular snorkelling site.

“The new restriction zone will cover roughly one kilometre by 900m by 340m in area,” he said.

“At present, prohibitions apply to an area within a 400-metre radius of Point Quobba, but the new rules will apply to the entire coral reef and lagoon area.”

The FHPA, about 75km from Carnarvon, is not far from the blowholes. Colourful and diverse inshore habitats and fish communities are within easy reach of the beach.

The Minister said the new rules for the Point Quobba restricted area included:

no spear fishing, recreational fishing or commercial fishing in the restricted area
no collecting of any marine organisms (including live and dead coral, live rock, crustaceans or shells) in the restricted area, with the exception of rock oysters (taken by hand) and squid (taken using a squid jig without bait)
no jet skis within the restricted area to improve snorkeller safety and avoid disturbing fish.

Mr Moore said the community initiative would help raise awareness of the role of fish habitat protection areas and the need for careful management of marine environments.

“Before an FHPA can be set up or varied, interested groups and individuals have a direct say in how the area should be managed and protected,” he said.

The Minister said signs at a number of locations would detail the rules for the new restricted area and include a map of the entire FHPA.

Fishing is permitted in the section of the FHPA that is outside the expanded restriction zone.

Details of the changes to the FHPA at Point Quobba are available at http://www.fish.wa.gov.au. Look for Gascoyne Coast Marine Protected Areas, under the Environment menu.

Research shows some Ningaloo Reef fish are homebodies

Media Release

New research shows that some fish species in Western Australia's Ningaloo Marine Park spend most of their time close to home, staying on the reef rather than travelling significant distances, as was previously thought.
18 June 2009
Since November 2007, scientists from CSIRO’s Wealth from Oceans National Research Flagship have tagged over 300 fish in the Ningaloo area off WA’s North West Cape as part of a Western Australia Marine Science Institution (WAMSI) project.

CSIRO’s Dr Richard Pillans told the 8th Indo-Pacific Fish Conference held recently in Perth that around 40 per cent of tagged Spangled Emperor (an important sport fish, also known as nor-west snapper) remained within hundreds of metres of where they were originally captured.

“This is really exciting information as it provides evidence of a resident population,” Dr Pillans said. “Data from the tags also showed that highly mobile species like Gold Spot Trevally and grey reef sharks spent the majority of time within just a few kilometres of where they were tagged.”

The research aims to identify what influences the movement patterns and habitat use of fishes in the park, which encompasses the majority of Ningaloo Reef, the largest fringing reef in Australia.

The new data on the long-term movement patterns of sharks and other fish in the park will have important implications for future management decisions on the size and placement of sanctuary zones. Currently 34 per cent of the park is reserved as sanctuaries designed to protect marine animals and their habitat from human disturbance.

“We're working on gathering information that will inform management to assist protection of individual species and groups of species,”
Dr Babcock said.To better understand fish movement patterns and habitat use within the park, the Ningaloo Reef Ecosystem Tracking Array (NRETA) was established in 2007 as part of the Integrated Marine Observing System's Australian Acoustic Tracking and Monitoring System. NRETA consists of 104 acoustic receivers along the Ningaloo coastline and is Australia's largest array of acoustic receivers.

Fish tagged with internal ultrasonic tags are then able to be accurately tracked around the study site. Over time, the information collected builds up a picture of the individual's movement patterns.

Project leader, CSIRO's Dr Russ Babcock, said many other previously unknown aspects of the lives of fish on Ningaloo, such as where and when different species spawn, are being revealed.

"We're working on gathering information that will inform management to assist protection of individual species and groups of species," Dr Babcock said. "At the end of the study, we will be able to give the WA Department of Environment & Conservation a really good idea how fish and sharks use the marine park."

Cheers all.
