Help me decide the most meritorious fish
Submitted by Belly Fish on Tue, 2019-10-08 09:57Hi there. I'm in the Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club and our fishing year has come to an end. In the beach/rock fishing area, we have a trophy for the Most Meritorious Fish. I've put together a shortlist, and I'm hoping I can get fellow anglers views on what they think is the best of the bunch. Candidates are: 0.417kg Breaksea Cod 4.120kg Dhufish 2.365kg Spangled Emperor 2.260kg Harlequin 18.720kg Spanish Mackerel 12.760kg Mulloway 17.780kg Samsonfish 0.429kg King George Whiting Some good fish from the shore here, but I think my top 3 (in no order) are Dhufish, Harlequin and Spanish Mackerel. Please let me know what you think. Cheers Belly

Plaig Reel Bearings
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Mon, 2019-10-07 13:27It's time to give my 1000 Rareniums a birthday after both being dunked. I stripped and regreased them etc straight away but they are suffering from noisy bearings. Has anyone purhased a bearing kit for their reel from Plaig and how did they go?
Cheers JF

Five fathom advice
Submitted by joycey on Sun, 2019-10-06 16:16Hi all
With the new closure areas stopping me from fishing my normal inshore spots, I plan to try the western side of the five fathom bank behind garden island before the demersal ban kicks in.
Not done much fishing in this area. Am I best to drift or anchor and burley?
Cheers for any advice
Joycey

totalscan
Submitted by crano on Thu, 2019-10-03 17:47I took a totalscan transducer off the bottom of my boat. It had been sikaflexed on . It ended up with a small crack near the back of it but it still works OK. If anyone can use it they can have it for free. It is in Bunbury.
I am now trying a 3 in 1 transducer.

Penn Prevail 14'6" - lost top piece
Submitted by chris1108 on Wed, 2019-10-02 19:23I know it's a long shot, but I only realised in September, after 4-5 months break from fishing, that I left the top piece of my Penn Prevail 14'6" (3 pce) rod at South Mole around April/May. Such a random thing to have occurred because normally I would have had a glow stick on it and wrapped it in rod holders afterwards.
It's probably too late to ask around if anyone has seen it. But would anyone happen to have a spare piece that they would be willing to sell? It's a really gut-wrenching thing to have lost because next to the Pflueger Crank, it's my favourite rod for surf fishing.
Hitch-Hiker
Submitted by rossp on Tue, 2019-10-01 13:27Was out solo yesterday on the reef 3km off 14 mile at Warroora station, and heard a voice.
WTF. radio not on. Looked about and there was a diver coming over to my boat.
Can I get a lift back in when you go?
Apparently he had been out with a crew in a boat all diving along the reef, and they left him there.
Lucky boy.
Would have liked to hear the conversation when he caught up with the crew!!

Whales
Submitted by KJay on Tue, 2019-10-01 11:09Hi All,
Thinking of taking the Mother in Law out to see a whale tomorrow. Looking for advice on if there are there many around at the moment? The best places where they seem to be in higher frequency? eg. North or south of Rotto, 30 m mark, 40 m mark?
Any help much appreciated.
Thanks

Court update
Submitted by Blackgold on Sat, 2019-09-28 19:21From fisheries department - dated 13 September A costly reminder that it is illegal to interfere with fishing gear .A man was fined $ 3000 and issued with $225.90 in court costs earlier this week for taking a octopus pot after it’s long line became tangled with his anchor in Cockburn Sound last year. the man had removed the pot , taken it home and attached a pool noodle to it as a float before using it to fish for octopus himself. Unlawful interference with Commercial fishing gear carries a penalty of up to $25000 and / or up to 12 months imprisonment or confiscation of boat and vehicle used in illegal activity .Most fishers do the right thing

Steep point quickie
Submitted by stricko on Thu, 2019-09-26 18:49First up sorry for the lack of photos just done a quick two day spearfishing trip to steep so we were pretty stoked had been a couple of few years since i or mates had been there place especially the cliffs from a boat spectacular to say the least oh i left the camera on the beach each day. Anyway we spent most of our two six hours in the water trying for mackerel and even had a hard time trying to get sharks into the berly trail water was clean enough in places mainly the fault line surf point area we fished but 21 degs and probably colder at depth so only 2 macks seen still we got some good baldies and a few over bits and pieces 10 keg mulla fish ot the trip not mine unfortunately. Am curious as to how you line fisherman go this time of year as we seen the balloons on the point it seemed really quite fish wise for anywhere then alone steep .on another note and not a good one when we left denham after leaving the car and trailer at the ramp overnight 5ks up the road we lost a tyre at speed off the trailer all six nuts on one wheel came off at once they were within 10 meters of each other on a dual axel trailer gaurd and tyre fu#ked could have been worse oh and a hour looking for tyre would like to think accident but hard to think it wasn't deliberate has anyone ever had a issue denham or anywhere else like this can't think how else it could happen.

whiting offshore Rockingham
Submitted by Mack1 on Thu, 2019-09-26 07:29Just asking foe advice on the best water depth for big fat whiting offshore Rocko. My attempts so far over the years has only resulted in mainly smallish ones with the occasional keeper. I have fished both sides of the five and my best returns for numbers tend to be behind Garden Island, but not many bigger ones. Or is it more of a seasonal thing for the bigger ones?
