whiting offshore Rockingham
Submitted by Mack1 on Thu, 2019-09-26 07:29Just asking foe advice on the best water depth for big fat whiting offshore Rocko. My attempts so far over the years has only resulted in mainly smallish ones with the occasional keeper. I have fished both sides of the five and my best returns for numbers tend to be behind Garden Island, but not many bigger ones. Or is it more of a seasonal thing for the bigger ones?

Best Buy for 15k
Submitted by Grant Thompson on Wed, 2019-09-25 11:19Hi Fisho's
Looking for a boat suitable for fishing Cockburn Sound and Garden Island area's.
I have at present a speedboat style bowrider which just isn't pratical for my needs.
Looking at trading for a more fishing orientated vessel for day trips.
Probably wouldn't go past the Five Fathom but would like to get there safely and in a little bit of comfort.
My question is would a 5m Alloy be big enough to be safe for Garden Island or should I be looking at something bigger.
21ft older fibreglass jobs seem to be same price as more compact alloy models but i'm a little inexperienced to know what would suit better.
Also if anyone knows of any good units for sale / trade could you put me in touch.
Thanks...

Loan a 4.5 t boat trailer for a few hours
Submitted by JohnF on Tue, 2019-09-24 10:54Gents
We need to pull the Regulator out of the water for a few hours just to check the leg oil, one leg has a bit of a weep of oil, boat is at Mindarie, weights 4.5t, 30 ft long centre console. I am after a boat trailer, preferably with bunks, so we can just haul it out at Mindarie and into the car park, check and chnage the leg oil and put her back in. Wont be taking it on the road so legality not an issue.
I will take you out for a fish and a few beers in the Reg if your keen as payment......
Cheers
John

Bow rail or no bow rail ?
Submitted by Silver Fox on Sun, 2019-09-22 06:58Hi all.
I’m in the process of giving my new tub a refit ( 28 ft Bruce Harris Shark cat ) . The bow rail is a little wonky from a previous owners attempts to fix it and it’s showing evidence of water leaking into the forward cabin. There’s a stress free anchor winch in the anchor well that can be accessed from the cabin escape hatch if needed so going out on the deck is not really necessary to be doing anchoring stuff. I’m thinking of removing the rail altogether and filling the holes with epoxy to eliminate the water leaking in the front cabin. The deck is a no go zone whilst we’re under way so I’m thinking that losing it all together would be my best option? . My old boat ( 5m centre console , for sale !!! ) never had rails and I never felt the need for them to be on there . Your thoughts would be appreciated . Andy , I haven’t forgotten you !

Bait board material
Submitted by Gaffatron on Wed, 2019-09-18 12:26Hi all,
Short story:
purchased a new boat last weekend and the built in bait board has a few design flaws so i was going to get a mate to cut a piece of stainless plate for me as a new base, bent slightly so waste can drain down a hose centred towards the back.
however im not keen on leaving the finish in stainless because it will reflect the sun into your eyes and dull my knives. so my question is; is there a spray on materail or a paint on product that i can apply to the stainless to fix my problem?
i did think of gluing 3mm polyethelene ontop of the stainless but i reckon it will warp too much and wont allow the waste to fall towards the drain hole/pipe.
Long story:
the bait board has 19mm stainless tubing as a frame and has 19mm ply as the board, so waste will just run off the edges and it leans slightly forward so i need to go as thin as possible so it can contain a reasoable amount of liquid before it does overflow out the front, hence my thin stainless plate with a silicon bead to seal it up and not 6-9mm polyethelene that will possibly warp breaking the silicon seal
any ideas would be appreciated!

Winter Skippy and bycatch
Submitted by beau on Tue, 2019-09-17 18:36I have a spot out of Woodies in the shallows that always seems to be holding a big school of whitebait, only in 4m but come pelagic season its a real hot spot for spanish and shark mackerel, yellowtail kings and sambos. Coming back in one day I had a quick flick with some 8g micro jigs on this bombie and landed some nice skippy and undersize snapper. Throughout winter I anchored and burleyed on this bombie a few times and was totally addicted to catching the skippy that were calling it home, and some welcome bycatch also.
Dad with a high 40s fish, which turned out to be the average sized fish out there.
Pleasant bycatch. Simple rig, small jighead, 6lb leader, 6lb mainline. Head and tail of mulie for bait, everything in between chopped up fine for burley.
Not many skippy under 50 that day.
Some more bycatch, PB 56cm KGW.
Released.
One session I got totally chopped up by very large fish, with bigger pinks hanging close to the bombie and sambos sitting just off the motor eating every piece of bait and burley that hit the water. So headed out with some heavier gear and picked up some livies on the way out.
A hectic double hookup while solo, snapper eating a mulie cube on the skippy gear and the sambo on a live herring under a balloon.
Lucky hookup.
Another victim to the livie under the balloon.
Another new PB 62cm.
Dad with another skippy and well-known Balinese style dish "Blackened Fish"
Heading home, freezing cold, uggies on.

Kiwi on the loose in Exmouth next week
Submitted by TroutNZ on Tue, 2019-09-17 07:10Hi guys new to the forum, My names Elliot I'm a passionate hunter and fisherman from the south island of NZ. I'm coming over to visit family later this week in Karratha. My brother and I are going to be camping in Exmouth next week from Monday to Friday and I'm going to be fishing basically non stop that week. We are going to be based at a camping ground next to the Ningaloo. I've been doing as much research as I can (which lead me to this great forum) so I've got a vague idea of where to go and what to do but if anyone would like to catch up for a fish shore based and show me the ropes or even let me tag along if anyone's got a spare seat on their boat it would be greatly appreciated. It would be an absolute dream to catch a small black marlin or sailfish. The next fish on my bucket list is a GT or big Queenfish. I'm coming a bit under gunned with a 3-6kg 8 foot shimano rod and stradic 5000 spooled with 20lb braid but I'll give it a crack anyway! I'm also bringing a lighter set up for flicking little lures and softies around inside the reef. Anyway thanks for reading my novel if anyone's got any tips on where and what's working well lately please let me know!
Here's a few photos of what I get up to over here. Freshwater trout fishing is what we are famous for, the huge trout in our hydro canals and epic fly fishing in our rivers and lakes. The sea is too cold down here for great sea fishing but I still enjoy targeting a few fish off our beaches. Most notably a type of crustacean eating shark called rig and bizarre looking fish called an elephantfish. Lots of Kahawai too (you guys call them salmon I think) but we catch real salmon :) If anyone's planning a trip to this part of the world i'm happy to host!

Rain water in hull
Submitted by joycey on Mon, 2019-09-16 22:29Hi all,
Just after bit of advice
I have a fibreglass boat with outboard engine. I had to leave it out on the lawn last night weeks as redoing driveway.
Unfortunately without me realising, the boats hull had filled with rainwater ( to below deck level ) and was in there for last 2 weeks.
I drained it all out today and have it a good flush out with fresh water with a hose. I’ll let it fully air and dry out now.
Just after any advice , would this have caused any harm to the boat, has it happened to you, any tips on what to do
Cheers
Joycey

Big Cobe
Submitted by scotto on Sat, 2019-09-14 07:42A few photos of a big cobia I shot off shark bay this week.
We were diving a nice 8m bombie in about 15m surrounded by sand. A mate said he’d seen a big manta earlier, and when I saw this off in the distance, I originally thought it was another shark! Once I realised it was a cobe, I took a few deep breaths and hid behind a fan coral for a few dives, until I ambushed him on one of his ledge patrols. I nailed a good holding shot, and he stripped a good 50m of line off my reel before I started to gain control! Unbelievable power these cobia.
Went 27kgs, and definately my pb.

What fish is it?
Submitted by fab on Fri, 2019-09-13 16:14Hey guys and girls, my mate and I are in exmouth at the moment and are wondering what fish we saw swimming on top of the water, with mouths open. They weren’t feeding or anything, almost looked as though they were taking in air. They were big, with large tuna shaped tails. It looked so strange, two of these big fish just cruising on top of the water with mouthes open, not interested in bait or lures. Does anyone have any ideas? Thank you for any feedback.
Cheers Fab
