Gday Guys

Just doing my second last nightshift before I pack up and head back up to the Pilbara.Moved down to Albany 4 years ago and started doing the fly in /out thing.Albanys a great place but bloody cold.It took me about 7 months to consistanly catch fish down there ,not bad after 25 years in the pilbara.Hopefully The new camera will be in the xmas presents as Ive hinted it for 11 months now.How many of you have moved around the country in the last 2 years? Is there anything worse than packing?

was thinkin bout heading down south for a fish tomorrow, was thinkin bout sugarloaf rock, just curious whats the worst conditons is safe to fish there. been there once before when it was dead calm. I am in serious withdrawal symtoms of some good arm stretching fish. or does anyone know of any other good spots to go down that way?

I have been reading and using this website for a while, and its great so decided to join up and hopefully learn and meet few more fishos.

Had a few people pm me in regards to what hook type's we are using out wide and also in close for dhufish ect . Have been using the gladiator 14'0 circle with great success but have had one straighten and one bend at the eye yesterday , but that would be out of quite a few hundred and I still use them . Also I have been using two commercial hooks the big circle which is a 16'0 which would take a bit to straighten but needs the point touched up a bit with a file and the other is called an easy baiter I think with chemical sharpened point but  sort of a semi circle combined long shank .  Hope this helps everyone out

If we feel we are being stiched up by dodgy research, then I suggest we start our own Jewfish Database.

A typical entry might be

This could be done with all of the V5 SPECIES.  I am sure a new section of this site could be developed to accomodate this idea.

After a period of time we will have concrete evidence and will be able to make our own submissions to the West Australian newspaper etc.

WHAT was your VERY first Fishing Experience?

For me? I could talk about my early teenage years, fishing the wharves of Fremantle, not long after we came out to Oz in 1965 as a 'ten pound pom'. But there is an earlier experience.

In 1962, as a six year old, in England. A friend of my fathers who (actually) had a car (my family did not, and that wasn't unusual in the North East of England) agreed to drive us from Marden Estate (a (then) northern estate of Newcastle (Upon Tyne)) to our very first holiday, to 'Hayden Bridge'.

At that age, I can't remember too much detail, but the recolection of driving in an ((obligatory) black) Austin, and arriving at a quaint village built on either side of a small water-babbling river bridged by roman architecure cannot be forgotten.

In those days, forget about braid, we didn't even have mono. Our crude rigs consisted (literally) of a (tree) pole, a length of knotted string, and a hook, baited with a worm. Too many years preclude me from remembering if I caught anything from dropping my line at the very edge of the teppid rapids, from water bubbling under the ancient bridge.

But that doesn't matter. It was the experience and anticipation that counts.     

I'll never, ever, forget that. 

went to hilarys today on the diabled platform and a school of herring size fish came past jumping crazily and the school moved down the rocks (northwall) towards the beach as me and callum were throwing chromies out but nothing touched them

they came past 3 times and we just cudnt catch em

Hi All
I have recently purchased the 585 sounder ( big thanks to Jersey for hooking me up with a great price ). I'm looking for any tips on settings and things like that. I have never used any high tech sounder like this so I really don't know where to start. Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction and I can start to get the most out of this sounder. I guess like all things practice will make perfect also.

Due to the growing interest in GT popping and as it seems quite a few of our members are involved it seemed appropriate for me to share with you some of my observations of some various poppers I use. Please feel free to add any of your own comments or make any objections. I am not in any way affiliated with the manufacturer or distributor of these poppers. I will start off with the FCL Labo Ebipop. I had the pleasure of using an Ebipop for the first time when I was in exmouth recently. I used the 200g model on Kaseys Carpenter WV80XH and I was remarkably impressed with how easily it popped for it's weight. If your looking for a popper that makes maximum splash for the least amount of effort then this is for you. The closest thing I can compare it to would be the Halco Haymaker and anyone who is familiar with them will feel right at home with the Ebipop. The Ebipop is alot better engineered however, it is weighted better, more durable, and sits in the water better. The Ebipop feels way less likely to tumble or bounce off the top of a wave like some other poppers I've used. It does have it's flaws though and its's definately not as strong as it could be. After my first fish the rear treble attachment was bent at 90 degrees to the popper. I simply bent it back to the correct position but it is a problem that other poppers don't have. The paint seems quite durable, and isn't easily damaged by trebles (well no more than anything else I've used). Despite it's ease-of-use you will still need a beast of a rod to cast the 200g popper and pop it effectively. Something rated around 220-250g cast weight would be ideal. Carpenter SP78EXH or WV80XH or Smith Tokara are just a few that would be ideal. You'll also need fairly big trebles and I don't think that Owner 5/0s are big enough. Gamakatsu GT recorder 8/0s or Decoy 10/0s would be more suitable. The 140g model is a much better all rounder and easier to use and can be used on a greater variety of rods. It has all the same characteristics as the heavier version. The Ebipop is available in a variety of colours, Pink, Blue, Green, Black, Yellow and is available localy. At $65 it will be expensive to some but it is no where near as expensive as some other poppers available on the market. 

Just fuelled up the two cars and my boat today in maddington for $1.22 a litre bit of a change from two weeks ago at $1.52  , hopefully it's good karma

You must put with your frames that its from fishwrecked, a rough location of where you caught it (not gps marks unless your comfortable with that - even if the marks are 1km off your spot, just like, 10km out direct from Ocean Reef or something like that) and when you caught the fish (either date or time)

hey guys,

I've got a newbie boating question - I was going through my old magazines and was reading an article about catching big skippy out from ocean reef.

The jist of the article was fishing the breaker lines directly out from ocean reef...now my question is, what is the breaker line?

I assumed the breaker line is where the swell breaks...isnt this dangerous?
Can someone clarify this?

Seems no one is going out on Saturday, I for one am, if the weather holds up. Going to try anchoring on a patch and burling up for a few hours, see what happens.

Fisheries Minister Norman Moore has reconsidered an earlier plan to ban the use of power winches to lift rock lobster pots on boats used by recreational fishers for the coming 2008-09 season.

Mr Moore said the feedback he had received, after announcing changes last week to regulations governing recreational rock lobster fishing, indicated the power winch proposal needed further consideration and, as a consequence, would not be implemented this season.

“I have referred this particular issue to the Integrated Fisheries Allocation Advisory Committee to examine whether the use of winches on recreational boats causes conflict between the commercial and recreational rock lobster sectors in offshore waters and to make recommendations to me on their use,” he said.

“There are some serious considerations about the use of power winches by elderly or disabled people who participate in recreational lobster fishing which need further consideration.

“There are also matters related to policing and control of this issue.”

In addition to reconsidering the power winch proposal, the Minister said the Department of Fisheries chief executive officer had decided to waive the application fee for temporary transfer of commercial rock lobster units for the 2008-09 season.

This decision was made to provide some relief for commercial rock lobster fishers who had made economic decisions based on the situation prior to the Minister’s recent announcement of changes to regulations governing the industry.

Was wondering how many of you use the site I have attached? It's the CSIRO ocean currents site and ever since Mark from Got One in Bunbury gave it to me I have found I'm lost without it.

I often fish for Pinkies in the bay and have found by using this site to pin point cooler water, my success has increased.

Last year we were also catching plenty of nice Bluefin Tuna to 10kg in the bay whilst setting berley trails for Snapper yet this year no such success. By using this CSIRO site we were able to compare last years temps with this years and note the water was by far warmer in the bay this year and the colder water was a lot further offshore, thus no doubt the Tuna were sitting out wide as well. I also focused on the cold water spots (small pockets here and there in the bay) to maximise my Snapper catches.

Several years ago ANSA and the West Coast Sportfishing Club were involved in a tagging program, mainly Dhuies and Pinkies plus other species.
I alone had 16 dhuies recapured after I had caught tagged and released them.
These were mainly around rotto in water up to 40 metres deep.Most of them were undersized when tagged and size when recaptured.they were all recaught in the same position they were originally caught.No release weight was used as they were brought up very slowly.The release weight was created during this program.
The pinkies were all recaught in a different area,one tagged at rotto was recaught up near Mindarie.
