Submitted by VAGABOND on Sun, 2008-10-12 07:20Looking at repowering the boat, would be interested if any has one to give me some info on how they are running, Fuel Economy, Reliability etc. The etec is about $2000 to $3000 less in price, also considering the 175hp Suzuki but it's only a 4cyl compared to the V6. Weight 175HP Suzuki 215kg, 200hp Suzuki 263kg and Etec 200hp HO 232kg.

Swan River Fish deaths still under investigation
Submitted by Hobie-Wan on Fri, 2008-10-10 10:07I would steer clear of this area for a while chaps!

Fish deaths still under investigation9th October 05:08:25 GMT
The Department of Environment and Conservation is investigating water drains from Leederville to Lake Monger to determine what caused the deaths of more than 70 fish in the Swan River.
The dead fish, mainly bream, were found near the Barrack Street jetty yesterday afternoon.
DEC environmental hazards manager Ken Raine said it appeared the fish died as a result of discharge from a nearby drain.
“We are looking over a number of sites including dewatering sites,” he said.
Water and fish samples have been sent to the Chemistry Centre for analysis and results are expected in a week.
Mr Raine said there was concern about other animals being affected through the food chain.
“With the fish killed ,there is the possibility of other animals being affected,” he said.
If investigations determine the fish deaths were caused by a chemical dumped into a river, the person responsible will face hefty fines.
The Health Department has advised people not to swim or fish in the immediate area.

Garmin 400c
Submitted by Albee Mangles on Fri, 2008-10-10 09:33I'm looking at buying one of these for my Kayak. Has anyone used one, have one, or vouch for there performance?
https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=149&pID=8051
Is it worth getting a colour over a higher res Black and White sounder? How much of an extra aid is a colour screen?
Any feedback would be excellent.
Cheers in advance!

Mutant fish 'killing people in river'By staff writers
October 09, 2008 06:59pm
Catfish feeding on burnt corpses
Fears it is now eating unwary swimmers
Biologist Jeremy Wade studying its habits
A MUTANT fish has started killing people after feeding on human corpses dumped in a river, scientists believe.
The catfish, called a goonch, may have developed a taste for human flesh in an Indian river where bodies are dumped after funerals, The Sun reported.
Locals believe the fish has moved on from scavenging to snatching bathers who swim in the Great Kali, located along the India-Nepal border.
Biologist Jeremy Wade is investigating the creature.
"The locals have told me of a theory that this monster has grown extra large on a diet of partially burnt corpses. It has perhaps got this taste for flesh by feasting on remains of funeral pyres," he said.
"There will be a few freak individuals that grow bigger than the other ones and if you throw in extra food, they will grow even bigger.”
Mr Wade said he caught one which tipped the scales at 73kg and was nearly 6ft long.
“If that got hold of you, there’d be no getting away," he said.

Management proposal - your thoughts
Submitted by Simon C on Fri, 2008-10-10 08:09IN light of the recent conversations and changes to closures I would like to hear some of the fishing GUru's thoughts on this as a workable solution and the reasons behind it.
Firstly - and this is just my observations from two years so please throw in your comments - I seem to find that Dhuies are really easy to catch around the FUll moon, not sure on pinks as I am a pinky Leper. Given that our main objective is to protect stocks does it make sense to have a complete bottom fishing ban on all demersals 3 days either side of the FUll moon each month. This would cut 6 days fishing out per month, at a time when IMO dhuies are very vulnerable to being caught. This, in combination with changed bags limits should allow Dhuies to do their thing (spawn) without any interuptions and also wipes out the inevitable bycatch that those (fishing for KG's) are going to kill.
Your thoughts - am I way of the mark, don't know shite, need to fish more?

Point me in the right direction
Submitted by GusG on Thu, 2008-10-09 10:07I want to do some freshwater fishing this weekend. I am hoping to hit some trout water and throw a few flies around. Only problem is I have no clue on the trout fisheries over here.
Can someone point me in the right direction? I was thinking of heading down around Pemberton or somwhere but somewhere closer to Perth would be great. Also any tips on flies/rigs etc would be handy. I was thinking of trying some nymphs, perhaps with a glow bug dropper behind in streams. Any help would be appreciated. PM if you dont want to broadcast your knowledge but I would really appreciate some help.
Thanks
Gus

Jigging the Rig
Submitted by Colin Hay on Thu, 2008-10-09 08:05Yesterday, Honshu and I had the opportunity to head out with Simon C to take advantage of our winning bids in the Fishwrecked auction for the trip to the Key Biscayne. While the wind didn't match up to the forecasts, it was still a great day with plenty of sambo action, topped off with a nice final session on a large school of pinkys. I managed to load up my new Xzoga rod on a few nice sambo and it handled really well. I managed to jig up five sambos at the Key Biscayne, two reasonable sized and a few smallies. Lost one bigger fish when my split ring gave out. Simon and his buddy Justin let Honshu have most of the action and Honshu pulled in a real nice Sambo. Simon and Justin landed a few Sambos and a couple of hard fighting "rat" Yellow Tail Kingfish. There was certainly plenty of fish out there, it was just hard to get past the Sambos. There were also a heap of whales, a couple of which came in close enough to give us some great sites. After having our fill of jigging the rig we then headed off looking for some bottom fish. With a stronger than expected seabreeze it was difficult to get a good drift going. However, Simon skillfully put us onto a big school of pinkys and we were able to catch close to our quota. Honshu also managed a nice Baldchin, while Justin, apart from catching some great pinkys, landed a great Blackarse. Simon picked up a nice solid little Dhuie and I caught a pretty decent sized flathead. All in all, it was a great day. The wind wasn't on its best behaviour, but the fishing was pretty awesome and the company was great. Simon is a great skipper and his new boat is very nice indeed. Simon has most of the pics so he will post them up later. I have posted a pic of Honshu with his Baldie and one of the whales. I have a lot of pics of blue water showing where the whale was, but I won;t post those. All the best, Colin Hay

Personal Ban
Submitted by Justin Poole on Thu, 2008-10-09 06:31Thats it I am putting my personal ban on fishing perth's water!
We went out to rhe barge west of rotto again today, only to sacrifice numrous paternoster rigs to the mongrel leather jackets. I am over it! back to reef fishing for till we get some reports sambos are in..
Actually fished the bottom at heaps of spots (paternoster and driftbait), which all had good structure the whole day, pnly to return with nothing in the ice box,
What a barren waste land the ground is between ocean reef and rotto, this area here is where they need to have a fishing ban to get some regrowth happening for a few years for real, the under size pinks and dhu's are few and far between in this area, and never even seen a black arse all in two solid days fishing, Mindarie will be the furthur most south i will be launching now for some time, 2 roks the most. Lancelin or ledge next.
I admit i have a museum piece of a sounder which works in the fishes favour, but i seldom return without a feed fishing north of perth. have they beeing doing secret nuclear testin in these waters or what?
At least my speciality species "wrasse" wont let me down for some entertainment, "go the wrasse"!! Haha!

Fish Seasons
Submitted by tommo77 on Tue, 2008-10-07 19:49Just thought i would start up a fairly useful thread for all us keen fishos about what time of the year fish start to usually run well in the metro areas, i know that you can catch most all year around but any advice helps!! Some fish species are:
Tailor
Salmon
Mulloway
Pink Snapper
Dhufish
Tuna
Bonito
Garfish/Herring/Whiting
Skippy
Squid
Flathead/Flounder
Black bream/Tarwhine
Blue Manna Crabs
Please include in your own opinion a brief description of where and what time of the day is best for trying to catch some of these species and feel free to add more fish in this thread!!
Just gives alot of newbies to the site and to fishing itself a bit more help with it all.
Thanks alot, Tommo
