AG chain knot

Hey guys just after some opinions,

Does anyone use an AG chain knot when jigging ie. tying swivel to leeder. Does it have any strength bonus or is the idea that the thickness/length of the knot help with abbrasion resistance as the knot will presumably be within range of teeth?

I usually use a uni knot to tie my jigs on but have had a few bust-offs on bigger fish just above the swivel (not due to knot failure).

Cheers

Worth trying upstream for mulloway?

My mind is set on catching one.

I was wondering if it's worth trying to catch one preferrably around the guildford area. I read somewhere recently on these forums that there's a hole under the pipe at fishmarket reserve which I didn't know about and I've always fished this area for bream and I even ran into a school of chopper tailor one day which we caught on lures.

I can walk to this spot from my house but not sure if mulloway lurk the area this time of year.

A Couple of Trips Out with FW Members

At last, an afternoon forecast yesterday that wasn’t a gale.  And, this morning looked the goods as well.  I have been pining for the first post ban legal pinkie so it was definitely time to give it a go.

After numerous discussions with Tim-o about getting out on his Bar Crusher to chase some pinkies, the trip was arranged.  It was a shame that Beau couldn’t come along too, but more about that later.  A day load of text messages about conditions and it was at the ramp about 4ish to head out on a very hot summers day.  The inland storm seemed to calm the conditions down and we were greeted by quite benign conditions – although Tim-o was suspect of barometric pressure impact on the bite.

All of my Metro pinkie chasing has been near shore and although Tim-o’s boat is more than capable of going afar, we decided to stay in close.  Got to the spot, anchored and started to get a stream of burley going.  I brought along some of my “mix” and the new burley bomb I needed to buy as the last one was “lost”.  Given the fish that the home made burley attracts (I have seen the schools in it before) I have been surprised that I haven’t seen more sharks.  Anyway, a week or so ago I dropped the bomb to about 25m as the currents were strong and after about 10 minutes I saw the rope floating next to me?  A retrieve of this showed a nasty bite mark in the rope and I think a grey coat decided it would be a good meal (not sure how it will go passing stainless steel and lead) and I dare say it is in a bit of trouble.

After 20 minutes or so we started to see solid fish on the sounder and hopes were high.  These hopes were not matched with bite rate however and there was plenty of bait switching going on.  After collection of a few undesirables (including Tim-o’s rather large Sgt Baker and baldie that just went 400mm but was released) the anticipation was growing.  Then, Tim-o’s rod goes off with something sizable.  He had been busted off already by what was called for a ray or shark but this one was a little different.  After a skillful display of rod work there was colour and it was silver and black.  Had to love it when a nice 7.5kg dhu found its way to the deck.

I was very impressed with Tim-o’s spiking, icing and general “care” for the fish.  The same goes for his care for the boat before, during and after the trip.  And, most importantly he had awesome stubbie holders that had a sticky base that meant you could put your beverage on the gunnels in a very secure way.  Gotta love that attention to detail.

Needless to say the photo got distributed to Tim-o’s “network” not long after.  I liked the reply from Beau that congratulated him and said he was going to chase the mullas.  I don’t know if it was Tim-o’s response saying the nice dhu was an omen for Beau’s trip but I am sure you have seen the story and we were pleased to see the mulla photo that came in a bit later in the night (although Tim-o’s cursing about how many hours he had put in to try and catch a mulla was very entertaining).

To cut a long story short, we got quite a lot of fish but the bite was definitely slow given the number that we had burleyed up.  A steady stream of skippy, Port Jackson and others kept us entertained but the elusive size pinkie unfortunately eluded us.  My highlight was hooking a pinkie, during the pinking hour, which I called as such and while bringing it up I stated that it was not size and would be about 420mm.  What do you know, we measured it and it was 420mm.  That and a smaller model were the pinkies for the night, but at least they are out there.  We finally relented and came in at about 10.30pm, happy with the catch of an excellent feed for Tim-o and plenty of cray bait.

With the conditions for this morning looking so promising, I had responded to Ricey’s offer of a deckie for Tuesday.  YPM was off with a mate in Denmark so if I wanted to get out and chase the pinkies on first light I really needed someone to come along.  At the time, the forecast was excellent up until about 9am so the intention was a “dash” before sunrise and we arranged a 4.30am start from Hillarys.  I must admit at 11.30pm last night I was doubting my sanity in arranging a trip in a few hours, but I had so needed to be there.  I was a little skeptical about taking someone out that I didn’t know but I reviewed Ricey’s profile before I made the offer and he did look the goods.  General note – including sufficient information in your profile is important – if you ask knowledgeable members for information (not saying that I am one) they will generally want to know a bit about you before they respond.  I note the comment of one knowledgeable member, that I have had a bit to do with lately, that says lots of people ask him for information about the Abrolhos and he will only ever respond if they use their actual name in the correspondence.

Dragged myself out of bed and was a little concerned when the real time data for Rottnest was showing 30+km winds.  The Hillarys real time was 5km so prep the boat, get the bait and off I go – feeling very tired.  To his credit, Ricey was there just before 4.30am raring to go – he said if you want to be a deckie that reliability is very important – I was just glad that I could get there on time and not let him down.  This part of FW is excellent as I had a companion, where as if I hadn’t I probably wouldn’t have gone.

We headed back to the “proven” pinkie ground and after an uneventful tip got there before 5am – the full moon was helpful in navigating the 3 Mile pot zone.  My Minn Kota is currently “out of action” so unfortunately the anchor was required.  After “anchor drifting” on one spot with little success we decided to move another location where the wind still pulled the reef anchor off the spot.  I am completely convinced that weather forecasting is a “black art” as conditions were pretty crap throughout the whole morning.  Eventually we did hold but it was a challenge.

The abundance of fish on the sounder from the night before had disappeared!  The first hour or more was, well, quite disappointing with nothing except a couple of wrasse – I’m sure the pinkies don’t like the anchor in the water and the noise of the boat slap.  At about 7am my “floater” finally went off and with solid head shakes hopes were high.  With light drag the screaming runs did not suggest a solid pinkie and it was no surprise when a rat 3.5kg sambo came to the surface.

A short time later came the highlight of the trip.  Ricey was fishing with “bream gear” and a size 1 when he hooked up solid.  No doubt this was a sambo and a bigger model than the one I had got.  No way, he was not going to land a fish like that on the gear he was using.  To his credit, and after a long fight, a 7kg fish was on the boat.  The size 1 hook was in the corner of its jaw and was very very close to being straightened.  The FW member is not a novice.

Not long after I got another hit and this one was a bit bigger.  1.2m and 13.5kg of sport fish happiness came to the boat as well.  Ricey did a quality job of tailing the fish aboard as it was a little large for the net.  I am still surprised by the length to weight ratio of the sambos.  The 27kg model that YPM got a few months ago was not much longer than this one but was twice its weight?  Ricey picked up a fox fish for lunch and I got a big ray to the boat, but conditions got really crappy and around 8am it was time to come in.  Although I don’t usually keep the sambos, these ones were kept for cray bait filler and future burley.

FishWrecked is a great site.  Got to go out with a mate I had met through the site, and a member that was just keen to come out and lend a hand.  No size pinkies but a really good experience.

Dunsbrough fishing

Hi guys, im heading over to dunsbrough later this month is there anywhere down there where i could pick up some landbased game fish such as sambos, ytks and sharks some info on spots or general locations would be much apreciated.

What is it

Discovered by a mate in the Peel Inlet over the weekend...appears to be some sort of offshore demersal. Based on the feet/rod/reel, am guessing around the 50cm mark. He said it had a plastic bag in its gob. Original colours obviously long gone. All I can think of is red snapper/nanny, but do they have fine, sharp teeth?

Denmark

Hi Guys,

Anyone fished in the Inlet an Denmark. was thinking of going down there in Feb. will be taking to tinnie so can get around a bit.

Just wondering if you catch anything in it or not.

Would it be worth putting some crab nets in while i have  fish around.

Mandurah Crabbing

Heading down to Mandurah next Monday to do some crabbing. First time putting the boat in water in that area. Any suggestions of where to launch and possible better areas for crabs. Suggestions would be appreciated.

Weather

What happened today weather man. After being laid up for a couple of weeks with a really bad cold I set out of Woodman's Point at 0600 this morning looking for a great day and got the message very quickly with multiple boats coming in as I headed out. Disappointing day.

seal at the huts /minninup beach

just had a phone call from mate who lives out near minninup beach Stratham

he says there is a seal of reasonable size layed up on the beach there ,they saw it this morning , not sure how long this one has been in the area, but be mind full of if your out that way ,

divers should also take note if your thinking about diving anywhere in that area , last time a seal was layed up there for a few weeks was when peter kurman was attacked offshore at minninup beach
might be no significance , but id be mindfull of it anyway

cockburn sound advice

 Hey all,

The missus has been bugging the crap out of me to come out fishing with me, but i'm not keen on steaming out through the swell to the good area's to have her winge about how rough it is, and have to come back in...

Plan will be to stay in the sound where it's protected and chase some squid and KG's.... Wondering if anyone can help me with a few good area's for each, would be appreciated.

Does the sound offer up anything else worthwhile other than squid and kg's (and snapper when legal to catch?)

Good Day out off the Cape

Early last year FW member Ben (Goodz) brought me down a sea anchor I had purchased from Perth. I invited him to join me for a fish next time he was down. Managed to tee it up yesterday while Ben is down on holidays with his family. Went out off the Cape in search of a few Dhuies. We couldn't get away from the Sambos early in the day but managed to find a couple of good fish around lunch time. Ben was first with a solid fish caught on a jig. A change of spots and it was my turn with another good Dhuie on a fresh squid head. It was around 98cm so I was pretty happy. Great to meet and fish with another FW member.

1-3kg rod with 6lb braid

I'm planning on buy a 1-3kg pflueger trion (which is on sale for $99 at bcf) paired with a sienna 1000fd for bream fishing with light lures.

I looked for some 4lb braid on their website but they only had fins and fireline which I heard is crap.

I did however find some sunline super pe 6lb which is I heard is great and I'm considering buying it with 8lb leader but would there be a big difference between 4lb and 6lb and would it be worth it? I do also go to fremantle and fish some flathead and skippy if that helps.

Fishing Clubs

Well, im back in NZ and amazingly it was sunnie and 27 yesterday! with remours of the first marlin tagged off NP making me smile even more!

Thought i would bring this up on discussion, Here in nz, i am a member of the New Plymouth Sport Fishing & Underwater Club. Week in week out, they are open wednesday through sunday (weekend lunch period as well) from roughly 3 pm. Cheep piss, Cheep and quality food and good company.

I am more so curious as to why it doesnt happen over in here in WA. I am unsure of regional fishing clubs, and i understand the EGFC does open thurs-sun.

Its a great way to meet crews, and get more involved within the reco fishing industry/fishing club, social times etc etc...

Be interesting here to PGFC thoughts, as i know they are a user on here.

thoughts?

Mandurah Crabbing - More precisely dawesville/Bouvard Way

Hi Guys

Quick report. Went out Sat and briefly Sunday and the big blues are certainly in, albeit a little empty so give them a week or 2. The pots was lean but the youngsters jumped overboard and caught most off the big blues scooping the Pinjarra side flats opposite the parkridge ramp. Will post proof but all the blues were at least 10mm over legal with 2 absolute monsters.

For 2 novice kids at scooping they did very very well, but their excited cries dragged a crowd over. I didnt know the range of crab fear profanities could reach this high a level, but the Mrs and I on the boat certainly enjoyed seeing youngsters having a ball.

Drifted the flats but found it much better to have the 2 on Port and starboard side, idling along stirring them up, and then releasing the catchers to chase.

WARNING: if you are going to do this make sure the kids CLEARLY understand that the call "Neutral" has to come first before they abandon ship to chase. I am a bit off a Safety Nazi!!!

Pulled the pots twice for 1 legal size keeper, which we returned as it was tiny compared with the big boys.

Enjoyed a feed of very fresh crab, alfafa sprouts and butter sangas on Saturday, and classic crab and corn "fishcakes" last night -- Yum.

Good luck. From the amount out there it might be a nice season.

can i fish at hilleries or under bridge into perth cbd

i was wondering because it says your not allowed once shops open up.i was also told it is stricktly enforced.

 Is this true.?

As for bridge into cbd. Apparently in wa your not loowed to fish on bridges...where as in tassy you can. I am not sure about laws in wa for fishing under that bridge. One coming from armadale direction ( if there is more than one)

Cheers

Finally got a chance to build myself a rod!!

Awesome, just finished my new 15kg stick. It is a bit longer than a standard stroker at 6 ft 3in but suits my needs perfectly with a bit more length for clearance around the boat. The pattern is a 4 sided split diamond with a varigated bacground. It was an epic build. 10 hours of chair bound fun.

Now I have just gotta get out there and bend it up.

Fish on!!

Fishing bait delivery business OPINIONS

Hey all im new to this website but joined up to post on the forums, i was wondering what youse would all think about having a small "business" so to speak, which delivers bait to your doorstep, what do you think would be cons and pros about this, would anyone see any benefit to this.. all opinions is valid, cheers

King George sound

hi everyone, after an awesome trip down at Yeagerup beach catching lots of flathead, bream, tailor and salmon (no report unless people want one because not many pics) mum and dad surprised me, saying they had booked a trip to Albany near the end of the holidays. I won't be doing too much fishing because my parents want to have a look around and after a week of fishing non-stop, they reckon that I can fish in Albany but they want to have a look around aswell.

anyway my mum says (like usual) that she wants a feed of fish and after all the fish we took back from Yeagerup, she is thinking that she wants more fish. So this means that I have also set myself a challange, to catch a King George Whiting in the King George Sound. I just want a reliable spot that I could hopefully come home with a few fish, nothing that needs a 4x4 (I have never been so don't know is some parts of the sound is 4x4 only).

so if anyone has a suggestion, please say. I also want to know a good rig? Is something like a paternoster rig with whitebait gangs and whitebait good? Also is a star sinker good? I know I have asked lots and lots of questions but I only have 1 more. How far should I cast? I am not the best at casting but I can get just below an average cast of an experienced beach fisherman when I'm at my best.

lachie

lures i bought..opinions.

so these aew lures an line i got. What do ppl thinksorry pic is upside down im on mobile in midland so cant fix

Boating in esperance

 Gday Guys

I'm heading down to esperance for aussie day and im taking the boat (7 meter hard top) and was looking for some advice as to where anybody can recommend for both bottom species and top species like the bluefin tuna that i'd love to get. I have had some advice from a few others on a different site but i thought i may as well ask on this one too. Any advice would be great

Thanks
