Demersals on livebaits??
Submitted by berserkfishing on Thu, 2015-01-22 21:22Hi guys,
I was just thinking about starting to live bait this summer and was wondering if anyone has caught demersals on live baits, particularly herring as they are plentiful?
Also, if many have caught Yellowtail Kingfish on herring as well?
Cheers,

Suspension Upgrade
Submitted by Peko on Thu, 2015-01-22 15:38I've got a Landcruiser 200 series with a 2" lift and old man emu suspension from ARB. When the current suspension was installed there was never any intention of towing - anything. Times change and with about 3 tonne of boat fully loaded with fuel and gear I really need something a little more adequate to handle the load. Its OK for around town but not stiff enough for travelling long distances up North. Can anybody offer suggestion as to a company I could contact and do business with. I would like somebody that really knows there stuff as opposed to the catalogue flicking salesman.

WA legislation does not allow officers to breath test skippers of boats
Submitted by rigpig on Thu, 2015-01-22 12:19I'm not suggesting that I'm going to go out and get drunk on my boat but I didn't know that the Police can not breath test you on your boat... Other states certainly can.

Dusting off the rods for Coral bay
Submitted by tailor marc on Wed, 2015-01-21 20:16Hey guys,
been a while since i have wet a line and feel ashamed of myself but i have focused alot of my time and effort on my photography and building my name and my work.
Lisa & I are taking a much needed break to Coral bay very soon. Im driving up and staying at the peoples park ocean biew studio apartment.
I plan to do some shore based fishing and need to see if anyone can answer my question.
The one place that took my fancy to have a fish was from the rock wall at the new boat ramp.
Do any of you know if your allowed to fish from here? I searched the forum and google. Some say you can, some say only after charter boats come in the arvo
all help muchly appreciated

A day of firsts and a bitter sweet ending
Submitted by Notorious on Wed, 2015-01-21 10:01First local freedive yesterday with the new boat.
The Dhu went 56cm and was my deepest fish shot yet in 23.1metres. Proud of the dive, fish could have been bigger but at that depth I didnt have any reserves left in the tank. Shot him, and git muzzle wrap on my gun, luckily I got a kill shot, and skull dragged him to the surface for some sweet oxygen.
The Spanish was my first ever caught trolling (thanks to you guys for lure recomendationsm in my top 3 lures thread) - had seen mackies all morning (schools of sharkies and a few Spanish) that were staying out of range. Decide to move spots and try trolling and this mack hit the lure (halco 190) in under 1 minute of being in the water. A 3-4 minute fight followed and my first line caught Spanish came to the surface. I was stoked, this trolling business is too fun and easy! :D
Dive buddy shot the baldie near the bottom in around 20'ish metres also, a stonker!
Day ended on a bad note, dropped my favourite gun in around 30m of murkey water while burleying for some horse size snapper, never to be seen again :(

Stopping big fish in shallow water
Submitted by z00m on Wed, 2015-01-21 09:15Hello, just wondering if I can get some tips on stopping large fishies in less that 20m of water?
Yesterday we fed a live sargeant baker down on 30lb braid and saw a whitish shape take it about 10m down. The initial take was a screaming run until the braid was cut by what I assume was the reef. Leader, swivel and everything gone.
Later in the day a 40lb bottom outfit was smoked on the initial run, again with the braid cut cleanly. 3m 60lb leader, swivel eveything gone. No sign that the knot failed with the braid coming back like it was cut with scissors.
These cut-offs didn't even feel like the rods had even loaded up fully.
Any suggestions?
Do I let them run and wait to retrieve line or try and lock up on them and keep them away from the bottom?
Also had large sambos happy to visibly eat cubes in the berley trail and not touch the cubes with hooks in them. Are sambos fussy when the water is really clear?
Cheers,
Mike.

Some big surprises from down south
Submitted by Rozza87 on Tue, 2015-01-20 22:08Had a brilliant couple of weeks down South over the break. Got out a couple of times from the new marina in Augusta, the highlight of which was this Dhu which went like a steam train in 9m of water. Called it for a sambo or YTK because it took off on three big runs & kept fighting right up to the surface! Very un-Dhu like.
After New Years at a friends in Margs gorging on fresh crays, Dhu & the biggest marron I've ever seen we hit Hamelin Bay for some free diving & cray wrangling. Ended up with an full esky including a jumbo pulled from 2m of water only 20m from shore!
p.s. Excuse the "flexing" with the jumbo. Photo was a split second after the bugger kicked me in the stomach!

Fishing off Hillarys Help please
Submitted by cox83 on Tue, 2015-01-20 21:49Been Fishing for a few years now in a mates boat and have just bought myself a small fiberglass boat for myself, In that time we haven't had a huge amount of success going for Snapper or Dhufish. We keep hearing stories of people bagging out and besides the odd just size snapper and dhu, we haven't had a huge amount of luck. I realize its asking a lot, but would anyone care to share some gps coordinates to steer us in the right direction (literally. or possibly some tips other that to give up. We are very good Wrasse fishermen.

They're Big Close to the Shore in WA
Submitted by Mick C on Tue, 2015-01-20 20:39After a weekend of big sharks, big prizes, big tailor (nearly really big), big sambos and a big jumbo (see: http://www.fishwrecked.com/forum/weekend-captures-including-great-white-sort-capture), the conditions last night and this morning allowed us to get out there again. Pleased to report a few more tasty big things.
Filled up on cray bait last night with the highlight being a 32cm tube squid. Unfortunately no size pinkies but getting close now with a couple close to 40cm.
Went out to pull and bait the pots this morning and got these from 2, with a few berried female throw backs. Double jumbo, with a weight well over 2kg each. Not many more now and the pots will come in so we can chase the mackies, instead of pulling pots.
With conditions so flat this morning, we spent it sounding for new ground. A few really good nearshore marks were found, for future early morning and evening sessions, with a near half metre King George coming off one.
Perth nearshore metro delivers again. How good is it where you can have a little boat but still catch big desirable things

Stolen pots
Submitted by NORUN NOFUN on Tue, 2015-01-20 11:50Just letting all know that we had our pots tampered with over the weekend out of Mindarie.
1 lost and 1 retrieved.
They were there saturday, gone sunday , no problems with rope, weights, clearly identifiable.
First time they have been stuffed around with for the season.
This post is just a reminder to all that the low life's are out and about.
Cheers

Kudos to Keoghs Marine
Submitted by Subaquatic on Tue, 2015-01-20 09:26I snapped a shaft in my Lewmar Winch last week.
After a testing time trying to repair it, I gave up last night, and rang around Perth for a replacement.
The usual haunts didnt have any in stock, but an online search showed Keoghs Marine in QLD had them in stock, at an amazing price.
I called them at 830am, and by 9.20am, it was on its way to Perth, overnight express for $24.
Service was fast, friendly and economical.
These guys go to the top of my list for online service.

Squidgy
Submitted by lachieH on Tue, 2015-01-20 09:17I was just looking around and saw the squidgy pro flick baits. They look lots like whitebait/mulies in some of the colours. I was just wondering are they productive for bream in the river? And if I do use them what length and what size jighead should I use?

Going for a bullshark session, any tips?
Submitted by Mayfly on Mon, 2015-01-19 21:50I'm going down to my local spot to target some bullshark for the first time.
It's quite far upstream but I know they're likely to be there as people have caught them close by before and there seems to be lots of mullet and boney herring around.
I don't wanna be targeting monsters, I know it's probably going to be a challenge with 10lb mono (got some trace at least) but would boney herring be the best choice of bait? And if you got any tips, please share them, thanks.

Today's report
Submitted by sea-kem on Mon, 2015-01-19 19:58So after deciding to wag work headed out this morning into the mid 20's before going wider. Managed to drop the Pinky of a lifetime about 3m below the surface, this thing was not going to give up with ball tearing runs all the way up. So he gets to play another day, anyway after the dummy spit punched out to mid 40's for a little more action. Oldest pulls up a nice Bronzie about a metre long followed quickly with the good Baldy. About an hour passes with me twiddling my thumbs when my little Demon blood outfit comes to life and line starts peeling off, set the hooks and knew I had something decent. A good arm stretch and up comes uncle Buck
Another drift and all's quite when my mate comes over the radio to tell us to try his drift, so back into the 30's and as soon as the lines are in both the boys are on with their new light gear, ahhh I love watching this stuff anyway up pops two good Dhuies, biggest kept and the other released.
Next up I'm on with a double header Dhuie and size Pinky. For the next half an hour the boys have some fun catching and releasing about half a dozen good size Dhuies, that's something we've encountered before. Always get plenty of undersize but these were all in the 5kg range.
Looks like the wind's up for the next week or so so am bloody glad we took the opportunity.

What's the worst fisheries rule you have heard of?
Submitted by woody on Mon, 2015-01-19 19:12Mine would have to be " not being able to shuck abalone within 200m of the high water mark" WTF? This is surely a metro rule to enable fisheries officers to accurately measure ab fishos catches?
But down here in Esperance we have long ab seasons and we have always shucked where we caught them and recyled the shells to the sea...certainly aren't going to shuck them up in the bush (if camping out) or at home and put the shells in the bin!!
If we can have different seasons, bag limits etc on the south coast why keep this stupid rule?
