Submitted by fabian on Wed, 2015-01-28 10:36hi guys
i purchased my first decent ( i think ) rod and reel combo for perth metro boat fishing.
mate got his boat in order so will be doing bit of fishing out garden/karnac Island way.
all new to getting out there so any recommendations would be great!
i purchased an Ugly Stik bluewater 7' 15-24kg rod and a Stradic 5000fj reel with 30lb fin braid.
what would be the best way to use this combo for the water will be fishing in?
thanks

E Shed Mullas
Submitted by Matt Hughes on Tue, 2015-01-27 21:47First post here
Spent the night at E Shed hoping for that mulla to cruise through (never caught a legal one before) when suddenly a drag screams off in the distance, a hook up. 10 mullas hooked in 30 minutes and 7 or 8 landed with the biggest going at around 20kg. None caught by me or Hutch (another fw member). Definitely going to be down there tomorrow night hoping for a catch.
Here's a few pics.

Exmouth current strength
Submitted by GGs on Tue, 2015-01-27 16:55Hey guys,
Just after some basic info on the strength of the currents in Exmouth (West side/Muirons and Gulf) around April/May. I used the search function to little avail.
For jigging in water less than 40m i generally use jigs in the 70-130g range. Does this weight range sound about right for Exmouth or will I need heavier jigs as the currents make it hard to keep the lighter jigs vertical in shallow water?
I will be stocking up on heavier 180-230ish gram jigs for the deeper water but hoping to use the lighter gear in the shallows.
Cheers

Boat Trailer Stone Guards - where to buy
Submitted by rigpig on Tue, 2015-01-27 15:46G'day all, I did a search of the forums and the last quiery on this was during 2012. What I'm after is a place that sells stone guards for boat trailers like the angled ones that you normally see on the front of camper trailers etc. I rang a couple of caravan places and they have some that suit A-Framed Trailers ie, caravan trailers, but they had nothing to suit a single bar trailer from the tow hitch that then went into an A-Frame. I hope that makes sense??
Anyway, that is what I'm after if anybody knows of a place that does them to suit boat trailers.
Cheers...

Went to south street tackle to buy a rod today
Submitted by tassy on Tue, 2015-01-27 13:03I ended up getting something called phfluger trion combo 2-4kg.
Seems nice but I was wondering if anyone has seen them or used them. I know the guys down there wouldn't do what Bcf did but it has me worried. The reviews on it seem to say that even a whiting will snap it. Having spent 200 on it I know isn't a huge amount, but still...

Stock Piling of Crays vs Fish
Submitted by Brucesta on Tue, 2015-01-27 12:37I'm gonna cop some heat for this i'm sure and well if it's within the rules then so be it but i have read a number of threads over the summer about people heading out most days they can for the past few months and doing really well on the crays, they are obeying all the rules and sticking to thier limits but how is this different to fish possesion limit.
The rules are very clear with fillets of fish, the rules are there for all to see, do i agree with most of them, yeah no probs i guess i don't like the 20kg limit especially if you do well with say Mackerel i think this should change to 15kg of demersal fillets and no limit on Pelagic species fillets.
Anyway with such great management going into the Rock lobster fisheries it amazes me there isn't a possesion limit on crays? from what i've read and heard from down that way it's been a ripper season but we don't bat an eye lid to people loading up on crays in the freezer but go nuts about people getting over thier 20kg limit of fish?
Thoughts? constructive items only and as above if it's within the rules then good luck to you, you've sussed them out and have a freezer full of tasty treats for the next few months.
Sorry Adam if this starts a shit fight, shut it down if it does mate.

couple of photos from last trip
Submitted by dant on Tue, 2015-01-27 11:27Gday All,
finally got to get out for a fish, not a bad day in the end, jigging was a little tricky due to the fast current out wide - took my uncle out from England who is over on holidays, highlight for him was a double header baldy which he was stoked with, got our 6 for the day and let a few go. As per usual lost a couple of big ones early, the new rod and reel almost got thrown overboard :). Didnt have any bait rigs so dropped down to the shop the night before to grab some pre made ones, they are shit house - the uncle lost a couple of goodens also to straighten hooks.
The usual Sambos turned up smashing the jigs, always good fun on the light gear - tested out the new stella 5000 anyway, big noah kept coming up and snatching them - was good to see one in action.
Pic probably doesnt do it justice - nothing massive but all good table size, baldies were all around the 60cm, Pinky was just under 70, and the dhuie was 78cm

Cheers guys

Dirk Hartog in April/May
Submitted by Happy Hooker on Mon, 2015-01-26 07:15Hi All
Doing a trip for 12 days to DHI in April May and staying at Urchin Point. Anyone one been to shack lately ?
We have all gear, been and camped on Whitnell before but not sure about what we need to bring to the shack to make sure we are based ok. Have plenty of Engels and also bringing a 3KVA honda gennie, so more about what we need to bring table , chairs, lights ( they used to be able to hook gennie to a light system that was there) etc.
Trying to not bring items we wont need if its up there already. Also has anyone been on the new barge as yet ?
Last time we had to wait on beach for better weather to get across and it was only set times Kierien could bring you back.So also looking for info on if we need to stay night at steep pt or we can get barged across when we arrive in arvo/same on return do we need to sleep at DHI beach going back pending weather to get across.
Cheers

Why bream fishing with floats is my new favorite thing to do.
Submitted by Mayfly on Mon, 2015-01-26 00:18 I'd never fished bream using a float before, I'd always go unweighted or use a light sinker. Thought I'd give a float rig a go after a failed mullet session on bread.
Used a long leader below the float (long enough so the bait gets real low) and a small long shank. I found a lot of benefits using a float.
I could cast into the snaggiest locations where all the bream hide and I very rarely got snagged, no sinker meaning less chance to spook bream when casting and of course detecting bites with the float which is not only a lot more fun but you can definitely tell when and when not to strike.
I found my hookup rate was a lot more than fishing unweighted or with a sinker, caught bream after bream using a float.
Bait used was small pieces of muelie, bread and prawns.
I rarely see people mention floats when fishing for bream so I thought I'd post this for you to see my experience with one.

Western Rock Lobster Season Over - For Now at Least
Submitted by Mick C on Sun, 2015-01-25 17:07Happily pulled the pots from the water today. Over the last 10-12 weeks we have been solidly “at it” with the pots in deeper water – I’m pleased we have a winch. Over 200 nice big crays in the time, with at least as many berried, tar spot and setose females thrown back, and it has been one hell of a season.
It’s time to go fishing. The pots are good, and we have cleaned up, but the effort required to pull them when conditions allow certainly eats into the fishing time. We made a pact a week or more back to put 20+ vacuum packed individuals away for future use and have now achieved that goal. In fact, the last few days have produced well more than that and we have a freezer full (but within Fisheries keeping limits).
A small snapshot of the ones we got is shown below. Quite a few male jumbos with the biggest carapace about 180mm.
I don’t eat them, so the best part is that we have lots of kilos of heads, etc that have been minced for the next burley run to attract the nearshore pinkies in Autumn and Winter. Let’s just say that the wife, family, relatives, friends and neighbors have appreciated our efforts.
I dare say we will go again in April when the females should be “collectable”, but for the next couple of months the time will be spent chasing the pelagics. If I have learned one thing, it is to find the ledges on the sounder and drop next to them and bait hard with fish that you have caught from the general area.

Traveling lure
Submitted by paul83 on Sun, 2015-01-25 15:56Finally managed to land a fish on the travelling twisty...
Why do people choose bait over lures for mulloway?
Submitted by Mayfly on Sun, 2015-01-25 14:32Is it a better hook up rate or is it just more easier and convenient?
Would a mullet imitation lure be a good idea or are you better off sticking to live bait?
Just want to get some opinions, thanks.

Trailer Castle Nut Tightness
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Sun, 2015-01-25 10:45What's the consensus on tightening the castle nut?
I usually tighten it to 'nut tight' and then back it off to the next notch but I just checked my bearing then and the sweet spot is right in between the two notches and I have a bit of play in the wheel when I back off the nut but I have to tighten the nut a bit to get it to the next notch.
I'm going to take the trailer for a short drive and redo it and hope that the bearing seat a bit better but failing that am I better to have some play or a tiny bit of tightness?

Exmouth Wind - Sept to October
Submitted by Red Dog on Sun, 2015-01-25 09:07Looking at booking a 10 - 12 day trip to Exmouth last week of Sept/1st week of October.
Research would suggest that there's a good chance of Southerlies and Souwesters popping up at that time of year which may make the Western side a bit ordinary but worst case scenario if the wind does come up, could we expect to get some reasonably calm conditions inside the gulf? ie Southerlies would be kinda 'offshore'.
Thinking maybe Queenfish, Permit etc
Been twenty five years since I've been up that way so would really appreciate any advice or your experience of Exmouth at that time of year.
