Thoughts on long cast beach reels
Submitted by Callum24 on Wed, 2015-02-11 13:36As my old baitrunner is about to be retired to the trophy room I have started to look at the long cast surf reels for chasing mulloway i run 50lb braid for mulloway so need something to hold at least 300m the reels i looked at have been the saltiga surf 6000 and the ultegra ci4 1400xtb
As much as i like the saltiga the slow ratio at 3.6-1 is putting me off due to needing to make up line quick when you got a big mulla in the surf, ultegra looks good and a bit cheaper but will it stand up to regular smokings by sharks?
or is there any other reels i could throw in the mix and is the casting that much better with the long spool?
Cheers cal

waypoints storage on GPS unit
Submitted by D_d_001 on Wed, 2015-02-11 10:37Am selling a C map in the for sale section (it's the old orange type out of a Navman trackfish) Have read a bit in the navman operations pdf that seems to say points are stored to head unit but can be transferred to an empty card for backup. IE I think it says points are not stored on the C Map itself. but not sure ?????
I don't care too much about making money in the sale just wanted to hopefully help out someone who can use the parts etc.
before I let it go I just wanted to see if anyone can confirm this. (didn't want to sell all my spots for cheap).... :)
BTW I don't have the head unit so cant put it in and delete spots like that.

Crabbing Question
Submitted by Bruce on Wed, 2015-02-11 09:36Am going crabbing tomorrow morning but unfortunately won't be able to cook up a storm until Friday avo, so I was just wondering whats the best way to store and maintain the crabs so they remain in good condition overnight? Was thinking straight into an ice-slurry then into the freezer once at home?
Or is it best to cook them on the same day?
Cheers

Reel & rod combo advice bottom bashing
Submitted by Anonymous on Mon, 2015-02-09 20:22Over the years I've just been using cheap rods & reels and it has been fine but now I'm starting to chase bigger fish. Off to port Gregory on the 19th & in hope of some tuna and macs, going to be using a penn 330 Gti, spooled with fresh mono (12 year old reel mint condition) for trawling. What I'm after is some recommends for bottom bouncing & the occasional jig preferring eggbeater... Will be fishing in depths of 30-40m & my budget for a combo would be around the $450 mark. Only would be jigging every now & then so would be primarily bait fishing until I find out if I like jigging, if So i will buy a dedicated jig combo later.
im also open to secondhand gear & jigs :)

One Lure Two Fish, and a Small Mulla from the Beach
Submitted by Mick C on Mon, 2015-02-09 19:38With the MAAC comp being called off on Saturday due to the strong wind warning, Sunday was looking good. After lots of potting, and a bit of bottom bashing in recent months, we made a conscious effort to go and do other things, and trolling live baits was top of the list to see whether there were any mackerel around. We launched out of Mindarie about 6.15am on Sunday with a plan to catch some tailor and go and troll them live on the wreck. After that, it was to search a bit of new ground for future pinkie missions. The down side of the ramp was the number of “Rampies” in attendance with the worst being the” Preppers” – get your boat ready in the car park mate, not on the ramp!
Off to the northern beaches and out with the lures. We always use a combination of surface and diving lures, and with the water being fairly dirty it was the surface lures that went off. I don’t reckon you can beat seeing your surface lure getting smashed - all that action and turmoil and then the rods go off. Anyway, we spent an enjoyable hour watching this with the highlight being getting two fish on the one lure. We loaded up the tuna tubes with eight perfect 35cm live tailor and headed out.
Disaster. We got to our spot and the tailor had died. Much soul searching was done before we realised that the technique to keep them from washing out of the tubes had starved them of fresh water. No matter, when you build custom things then you have to expect a bit of “fine tuning” and they will be fixed for next time. It made us concentrate on rigging a good dead bait for trolling and this is an important skill as you can’t always count on the live ones.
We trolled the dead bait on the downrigger for a while with only one solid strike without hookup. We were happy that we got a hit on the bait and reflected that the hooks were probably not big enough with all that flesh sitting around them. Examination of the bait on retrieve showed it was a sambo as it was “pulled” not “sliced”. We had nice baits and if the mackies were there we were sure there was enough time to find them. A little disappointing, but we were happy to be doing something different – and at least get a strike when no one else was getting anything.
We contemplated heading out into the 40-50’s to check out some ground. On the way it seemed as the breeze was picking up so changed plans to the high 20’s. Managed to find some awesome ground and the sounder shot says it all, and we had to have a fish.
This thing had fish all over it but as others have pointed out, enticing a bite was difficult – even on the top of the tide. We managed to get undersized just about everything with dhu, pinkies, baldies, black arse and heaps of others. We might not have brought home anything of note but it was a nice few hours with plenty of fish landed. We eventually gave up and headed in although had originally planned to stay out all day and fish the night, but the wind forecast (wrong again – it was actually good and seeing the posted pinkies makes me sick) and the lack of quality fish changed that plan.
I have such an understanding wife. Unbelievably, she greeted my suggestion of going down the beach for a fish on dusk with enthusiasm – perhaps it was the offer to invite the niece’s family and the kids? I was hoping to pick up a few tailor on my surf gear (that has had a very extended break) after observing “quality” water the day before. The first spot was full of weed and although you could hold a bait there was nothing of note and the retrieve was “heavy”. On the wife’s suggestion we moved down the beach to a sand hole between rocks and reef that she regularly swims in and has seen fish. After a couple of casts this spot was a lot more promising as the baits were being hit on a regular basis.
About third cast I hooked up to something that wasn’t a picker. To my amazement, it was a small mulloway (soapie) that came in through the breakers. A quick measure and it was just size and with the niece and her family very keen to have it for dinner, it came home.
I must say I was pretty stoked to catch one of these on my first beach fish for over a year (my first one in WA although I have got quite a few from the beach before). Yes it was little but it showed that a lightly weighted pilchard in a surf hole can produce when least expected. I am now inspired to target these with a bit more effort, particularly with live tailor in the beach rips from the boat on dark.
A nice day doing lots of different things when the bite was generally slow, although my mate Kev got a horse out deep. No “quality” fish for us but still worthwhile.

Accidently bought a shallow diver instead of a deep
Submitted by Mayfly on Sun, 2015-02-08 17:32Bought an atomic hardz crank 38 for bream, I was after the deep diver when I saw a different color however, I didn't realize it was the shallow version.
I've heard the shallow version is basically a sub-surface or topwater lure, so when they mean shallow, they really mean it.
How would I work it and where do I use it? Am I likely to catch a bream in the swan with this? I hope so...

Elec/mechanical advice needed
Submitted by boonmack on Sun, 2015-02-08 16:24hi guys
I have a fourty hp two stroke Johnson 1994. On a 4.8 metre Ali runabout
ive only recently purchased the boat so not too familiar with engine yet.
i took the young fella out this morning for a squid and on the way back the motor stalled out, next think smoke is coming from the terminals on the motor, my thoughts were not good.
anyway turns out the shoddy battery strap had given way and pos terminal of the battery was shorting against the boat (Ali).
once towed in and at home I have found the fuse in motor blown. Changed battery and fuse and she fires up and runs fine.
but as soon as I push in the choke in on key it blows the fuse.
does anybody know what could cause this or how the choke works?
Anyway an eventful morning thanks in advance for any help

Millard classic prizes
Submitted by Drillzy87 on Sun, 2015-02-08 13:21My small contribution to the Millard Classic fishing competition. We will be sponsoring the event with 2x bait boards that can be fitted to boats, ute tail gates, tables and chairs etc.
Bait board has a mounting strip welded to the base preventing it from slipping backwards. It's all fully welded and will not leak into your boat or ute!
Material is food grade high density polyethylene and can be used for food preparation also.
hope you all enjoy the event ;)

PG vs High gear spinning reels
Submitted by on the Drift on Sat, 2015-02-07 22:05I've been thinking about picking up a Saltiga for bottom bashing and demersal jigging whilst runout sales are on, keen to hear peoples thoughts on the high speed vs power gear models for this application. The high speed models feel tighter due to more gears meshing but some ppl reckon the high speed is better for jigging because you move the jig further per crank?

And the weeks' winner is....
Submitted by ranmar850 on Sat, 2015-02-07 10:56 Me. For f**kup of the week, that is. What's your PB for attempting to fill a fuel tank through a rod holder? Mine is now 75 litres
. Talk about mind on task-not. I had unscrewed the gunwhale filler, even, then stuck the nozzle in, and carefully watched the rod holder for signs of blowback
Only spotted it when I noticed the fuel running down the forecourt, two 40mm bungs open. Judging from what i recovered by bucket through the bungs, around 25 litres went down the road. Mal the owner said it wasn't the worst he had seen--that stood at $400 worth. I blame those new markers at the rivermouth, I'm still shaking my head at the waste of $1.4 million.
Oh, and for anyone heading up this way, the river started running a bit last night--not much in it, but it should stir up the fishing around the rivermouth, both land-and boat based.
