Steep Point Beach

Hi all, anyone fish the beaches at steep point at night with any success. fished the deep hole at the sandspit one night and got sharked a few times but that was it. looking at google earth it looks limited to where you could put a bait out as it looks pretty reefy  apart from the shallow beaches.

Daiwa reel service

After someone in Perth who can service Daiwa reels. I have a 3012 Certate and 3500 Certate that are due for a service but dont want the hassles of sending over to Daiwa in Sydney. Last time Daiwa serviced a 3000 Luvius it cost me $150 in parts and lasted a few months before it shat itself. I can drop off to Bluewater up here but they will only post it over to Daiwa. In Perth in a few weeks and would prefer South.

Cheers

Newbie ballooning advise

Hi I'm looking at getting a ballooning setup I have been looking at the shimano tyrnos 16 or 20 not sure on rod just yet are they a good size will be running braid 30 to 50lb mainly want it for mackies or just floating a bait out when casting some lures around also would that reel also be ok to use on a boat as a trolling reel heavy bottom bouncing reel thanks for any advice

Carbontex Drag Washers

Anyone use them?

I bought a sheet for my 1000 reels and my 2500 and he suggested I get a 1mm sheet for both. Once I packed the 1000 reel with new washers I had to squash them down to get the pin in resulting in a tight drag. I sanded them back but still not happy that I've sanded off the cross hatching on one side so should I get him to send me a 0.5mm sheet instead?

A few days inLancelin

Hey guys first post for me here,, im heading to Lancelin in a few weeks only shore based fishing, any ideas on what to expect or sugestions on where to fish would be appreciated

Black Point, East Augusta

Over the past few years I have fished just about every beach between Hopetown and the nine mile. Got to say that some of my favourites are around Bremmer, Fosters and Reef.
I just recently managed a good few days at Warren Beach and Deepdene in Augusta is one of my favourites.
But the one stretch of coast I have not fished is between East Augusta and Pemberton.
I hear a lot about Black Rock and Jasper Beach but have no idea of how to get there and what to expect.
Does anybody have a good knowledge of the area and can put me straight on access and directions?
Thanks

New light rod options

Hi Fellas,

Last week I broke my light spin rod which was a 3-5kg Rovex Airstrike, turning it from a 2 piece into a 4 piece, nevertheless it was a prize i won so wasn't too upset. (accidently highsticked it when it was snagged)

Looking for something similar to replace it with being there abouts 6'6", 3-5kg, Graphite, split butt, pref cork handles.

Preferably under the $150 mark

Been looking at:

Pflueger Trion

Shimano Raider

Shimano sonic Pro VII

G. Loomis GL2

Diawa TDT

appreciate your thoughts good or bad about rods you have experienced. :)

Free jumping mackie

Just  got back from the beach down near two rocks where i was getting whiting for bait with the kids and about 100m out a big mackeral launched out of the water, pretty cool to see.

Might be time to start trawling some lures around i think.

Vale the great mcSea

Vale Vic Mc Cristal , aged 86 , last week, The older folk on here will know the name , the younger should take the time too.

Less known in the west , he was a champion of the sort of things we rec fishers now take for granted, like the right to have a say in our own future, and the catch and release ethos.

A true man before his time , he spoke up for conservation, anglers rights, and took fishing as a pastime to new levels that we all enjoy now.

This passage a reflection on his thoughts.

"When a man understands the two kinds of hunting, it becomes difficult to maintain enthusiasm for the artificial kind." By 'artificial kind', McCristal means hunting or fishing simply to kill rather than taking a creature's life for food.  The kind of hunting shown in the infamous kangaroo scene of what is perhaps Australia's best film, Wake In Fright.  When people, generally shocked, ask me why I release fish, I tell them it is because I have spent so much time stalking them and observing their behaviour that I appreciate fish too completely as uniquely living beings to regularly kill them.  Fish have a right to live of their own accord, not just as an extension of the human appetite.  Of course I do sometimes take a fish to eat - of late, each time I hook a queenfish I have hoped it was a mackerel, which I very much enjoy eating.  This sentiment is something every keen sport fisherman understands, and we find its philosophy nowhere better espoused than in Vic McCristal's writing.  A hunter or angler should only kill what they intend to eat, and should always bear in mind conservation of the species one chases.  This gestalt switch in ecological attitude which takes place in those initially most committed to hunting and angling stands as a testament to the special orientation towards nature that is native to these activities.  Perhaps we become more fully immersed in the kind of hunting and gathering that the long development of the human body has evolved in relation to.  It is true that, in these activities, the senses intimately absorbed by the natural world, we become gladder, throwing free the stress of the modern and highly unnatural environments of work in which our badgered bodies etch out a living five days a week.

Blue gomoku and stradic 5000

What's everyone's opinion on this setup? Anyone used these two. I head out in a mates boat every now and then and want a light setup for 50m and under. Jigging, plastics and drift bait. Was hoping to use it for all three as I mainly land base fish. Probably spool with 30lb power pro, should be able to stop something decent. Any input appreciated. Cheers

Kununurra barra charters

 Hi guys,

First post although veteran spectator.

Looking to do a few days barra fishing around the Ord/Kununurra with my old man and brother. Non of us have any barra experience and was thinking a lodge with a fishing guide & boat each day.

It appears there are two operators up there; "Maccas Barra" and "Ultimate Adventures" of which the later is about half the price. Two main questions;

  1. Anybody had any experience/feedback with either, particularly Ultimate Adventures?

  2. Are there any other suitable options anyone could recommend up there?

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.

Cheers,

Sam

Marine trimmers, if thats what they're called?

Hey Ya'll

New tub needs some clear plastic added on top of the existing cabin thingo wind/wave shield (my boat vocabulary sucks) - the idea is, I want to keep the wave chop off me and the other passengers. Water coming in is bad enough in Summer, cant imagine how it will be in winter.

Any recoomendations for places SOR, near rockingham that can whip something up for me? Like a higher water screen.

home made burley

so i know most burley consists of fish flesh/frames and crustacean shells and pellets, but has anyone tried using other stuff?

ive mixed up something of my own using pork fat, leftover marinated chicken wing (cooked) oil/flavour, and the gnarly greasy rotten smelling waste that comes outa the catch can under the bbq and then ive mixed it all up with bread crumbs.

any thorts on how this will go? im going to try it anyway, if all else fails ill have a nice viewing portal in the harbour lol.

im considering keeping tails from prawns and other leftovers and might experiment with wheatbix and dog biscuits and whatever else will make a potent concoction.

anyone willing to share their tried and proven "secret" or not so secret? recipes and experiences with homemade burley?

Steep point Groper

Got a steep trip coming up soon so was going through old photos and film from our trip last year. thought i would share this pic which was off my go pro. pic quality not the best as ive just taken a screen pic off computer with my phone.  i tied rope to the go pro and kept throwing it off the cliffs and got some really good footage of trevally, the groper, turtles and many more. the groper has a lure hanging from his mouth from eating a mackrel.

Which floats more - Mono.. Braid or Dacron?

just wondering which line would float more

intended for ballooning

need a line that will stay on top of the water and wont sink

which has proven most to float on top of water and not sink?

mono

braid

or

dacron ?

cheers heaps

GoPro Hero4 silver - anybody use one?

Gday just got one of these from the Mrs as a gift .Ive never used one before and Im planning to capture footage while fishing out on the boat this summer. I got a 32GB SDcard with it also. Was thinking of mounting it on the overhead rod holders to film over the back of the boat.  Any tips from go pro users would be great like what settings to use it on, should i get other mounts that are available etc   cheers dave

Fishing today

Would it be good fishing today at the north mole?

black magic

I recentyl had 2 paternoster rigs break at the bend that passes through the eye of the hook. The line was not reefed and the knots all held good; this suggests that it was a line problem.

Used Black Magic fluorocarbon leader, 20 lb.

I have never had this happen before, not with black magic ( in 20/30/40 and 60 lb) nor with rovex and penn fluorocarbon leaders.

I do look after my spooled lines, they are kept in a watertight and opaque box so I do not think that sunlight nor water has degenerated the line.

May have been a "bad batch" of line ?

Just curious whether others have had the same experience with the same line?

What brand of flurocarbon do you AVOID and what brand do yuo PREFER?
