What to do
Submitted by johnno67 on Fri, 2015-02-27 00:53What to do have 225cc key west I imported it from the states 2 years ago have had five boats it's been the best boat I've ever owned fished 30 mile out of two rocks a lot and have caught some great fish towed it up north exmouth to derby spent a week on the boat at raft point croc creek horizontal falls and now of to Gnaraloo for two weeks in April .
the problem I have these days is I am retired and there is no one to fish with week days so the boat now is only getting used for the big trips which is only once a year what to do is it time to sell and get on a charter up north for that once a year trip you know where I'm coming from insurance maintenance it seems a waste but as I said earlier I've been through a lot of boats to find the perfect one

Any King Crab boats in Perth ?
Submitted by tassy on Thu, 2015-02-26 09:25I went fishing for Tassy Giant crabs for about 6 months back when many years ago. Back then a baby one was worth $25 on its own...Its worth alot more now, but its Serisouly regulated an watched intencly for any drop in numbers. It was something of a buzz I can tell you. When you get a 30 lb crab come up... Saw its large claw break a guys hand once... stupid muppit thought he could could hold it by the claws an wrapped his hand round INSIDE the claws.... Mistake :)
http://www.nmdc.com.au/fishy-fun-learning/marine-life-in-focus/giant-crab/
Sadly have not been able to buy any over here. Been to hileries, Freo etc an nada. So either you cant get em here, or they jsut dont import. (which is prolly a good thing, cos frozen fish is generally rubbish.

Jumbo Cray on Line
Submitted by Mick C on Thu, 2015-02-26 09:03Headed out Tuesday night, as you do when conditions allow. New ground, new burley, new rigs, fully serviced boat so why not give it a go? It was a bit touch and go as to whether the wind would settle down as predicted (yeah, better wait and actually see), but at 4pm it was dropping off and as it turned out there was almost no wind between 6-9pm.
We got a heap of “garbage fish”, including 4 Port Jackson, rays, and the variety of other undesirables. We did get some nice sized skippy and slimeys for the bait and burley freezer however (alas no size pinkies but worthwhile trying new ground). But, the catch of the night was when I felt a fairly normal, if not prolonged bite which I managed to snare. This thing was weird and I picked it for a small Dhu due to the “tail slaps” as it was coming up. WTF is that, when it got to the surface, then the cry of “cray” and the net was hastily shoved under. A male jumbo by any measure. 160mm carapace length and just about 3kg, snagged and brought to the surface.
We have enough crays in the freezer but with a fresh jumbo, the better half ordered lunch. The family told me they were getting sick of boiled crays (give me a break!) and I needed to cook some differently. I read and interesting post about “mushy crays”, and issues with jumbos, the other week so the BBQ was the order of the day.
Took out the tail, cut the legs off and cut the tail in half. Made a garlic, salt, pepper and olive oil paste and spread it over the tail meat. On to a hot plate to sear and partially cook the flesh side (thanks Rob H, your right those crusty bits are quality). Place shell down on the BBQ grill (a bit hotter) and close the lid for 10-15min. Add in the legs wrapped in foil for good measure.
Make a garlic cream sauce and pour it on the hot cray just before serving. Garnish with, well nothing other than a few weeds as the cray will do the job.
It all turned out great. No issues with it being a jumbo as it was tender the whole way through and I have “orders” to BBQ more. Nice little by-catch really.

Ningaloo Station - Boating Advice
Submitted by SausageSizzle on Thu, 2015-02-26 08:54Hi All,
Hoping I could extract some advice/experience from the Ningaloo Station regulars with boating in mind.
Planning to steam up from Coral Bay and camp either on the boat (28ft Fury CC) or beach in Lefroy Bay or around behind Windabandi Point with a week of billfish hunting locked in. Keen on this area as it appears to be closer to the deep water (limited fuel storage) although happy to be guided on this. Given Windabandi is also very protected in a seabreeze and a nice spot this would be my preference over Lefroy if its practical..
I have been up a few times before on kiteboaring trips so never had to consider a boat. What I was hoping to learn was:
1. Is the entry into Lefroy out from Billie Point sweet in all tides/most sea conditions? Is it the northern section of the passage that everyone uses (noting that there appears to be a passage out from Billie Point with a reef section in the middle making 2 possible channels)?
2. Which part of Lefroy do those with similar size boats anchor each night (if at all)?
3. Has anyone had any regular experience getting in and out of Windabandi in a similar size boat? Tides / swell etc. Around the tip via Lefroy bay or through the passage to the north?
4. If you had to set up a camp on the beach, which area have you found the best? (noting the station requires us to book a camp and stay there if we elect to camp on the beach)
Any other advice would be greatly appreciated - particularly if I am on completely the wrong track!
Any experience with the bill fish up there is also welcome news!
Cheers,
Sam

Coral bay help needed
Submitted by nuffy on Thu, 2015-02-26 00:43Hi guys,
heading to coral bay in a couple of months. Have fished there once before but struggled to find fish. Last time we headed out the south passage and went straight out sounding all the way out to the 100's. Found red throats and one coronation trout after quite a few days fishing. It was testing. I am after advice on robbo's , goodies and reds. Not after anyone's spots or honey holes just some sound advice and direction to get us started. We are going to do a bit of trawling as well for the usual suspects so any advice on depths would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Nathan.

Just wondering,
Submitted by 420casts on Wed, 2015-02-25 19:55Does anyone reckon you could use lollies instead of soft plastics ?
Thinking like snakes and other gummy style lollies as you can get more in a bag for less than most SP's, haha.
I thought about it because I reckon you could find some good coloured ones that may attract fish. Cheers!

Montes EOI
Submitted by slugger on Tue, 2015-02-24 19:56I am heading up for trip #7 end of April for a week or so, camping on the islands.
Other boat coming with me now looks doubtful and am keen for a second boat to tag along
You will need a very well maintained, seaworthy boat, understand your fuel usage, be safety conscious etc as is a 170mile round trip, launching from Onslow
I have a few prospects but no takers yet so if anyone is keen, drop me a pm with your details
Cheers

TOTM
Submitted by Jason P on Tue, 2015-02-24 19:12Sometimes I wonder with having POTM we should have TOTM (Tool of the month) as this would be rather funny and reduce the number of ridiculous posts. Winners should get a little spanner next to there name as their trophy. Maybe I'm a little harsh, just a thought. :)

Rec fishers using long lines ??
Submitted by tassy on Tue, 2015-02-24 18:01Are rec fishers in wa alowed to use long lines ?.
I was wondering because itsa good way to get something nice out deep. Say 100-200feet of tiger rope, some good sise shark hooks. An couta heads for bait...or a full tailor (in tassy comm boats we used full mullets/chunks of shark in close). Stripeys go mental over shart meat...
Now if it is legal you can avoid some prick pulling your lines by placing the buoy 6-8 feet under water. This means you need to be spot on with your gps coords an you will need a grapple. But it stops thives cold.
Only thing then you have to worry about is a king tide, cos if that happens y will have to wait for it to pop back up.
With 100 hooks baited, you will get something... Long as you come back an pull say.... 6-8 hours later. ( pulling 100 feet of tiger rope with a lead dropper on end will sort men from boys lol)

Molloy Island and surrounds
Submitted by p0ly on Mon, 2015-02-23 15:19Hi everyone, long time since using the forum, to the point my account is gone! (or perhaps it's my memory that's gone...)
Anyway, I'm heading down to Molloy Island near Augusta for three nights over the long weekend and wondered if anyone had any tips for fishing the area. I'll have a 3.9m dinghy with me so would be keen to get out on the river and try for some beefy bream. Is it worth trying for any of the bigger stuff in the deeper parts of the river? I've heard the odd report of snapper but don't know how reliable they are.
What about the local beaches around Augusta or nearby this time of year? I also have the 4WD so am happy to explore a bit.
Pretty keen to get the Mrs onto something a bit more substantial than a blowie or herring!
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Cheers.

Sunk boat
Submitted by Jason P on Mon, 2015-02-23 07:44I hear there is a sunk boat at Jackson rock, sitting upside down on the bottom of the sea about 4 or 5 metres long. Heard this as a guy was diving there on the weekend.
So if your missing your boat this maybe it.
