Is there a trick to rigging soft plastics ?
Submitted by tassy on Mon, 2015-03-02 18:37So far ive done 21 stickbaits 1 seemed to work. Most end up pointing down on an angle or up,or the rubber is pushing the hook off center.
I line it up beside bait to start with, then pinch head between fingers an feed hook through the head till it bends round, after which i push the tip through.

Cervantes in April
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Mon, 2015-03-02 14:17I've done some quick reading and it looks like there's some thumping herring up there and tailor so I'm keen to have a crack with some poppers and send some herring back out on a hook to avoid the rays but are there any squid around in April up there or is it going to be too warm for them?
Any other tips would be welcome, I have a 3m dinghy which I will take up if it's going to be no wind and swell otherwise I'll be landbased.

Maxel Sealion Two speed
Submitted by Jigga on Mon, 2015-03-02 13:09Anyone have any experience with these reels?
After watching every vid on youtube on WA flathead on soft plastics.
Submitted by tassy on Mon, 2015-03-02 12:32I need to change my lines a bit. SO I wanan get rid of the black braid th ey put on at Oceanside, but I am dammed if I know what lb it is... So if anyone has an idea on what sorta line Would work well up river, Ascott,guildford/Canning bridge/ etc I am all ears. I have 6lb flurocarbon as leader. Usually about 1m length onto my hard plastic so I assume softs will be same??..
I have looked at Fireline an all sorts of stuff in between. red green blue black white... u name it lol...
What do people usually go for on light gear?... 4 lb fireline for braid ? (its only one I am familiar with). 8-10 lb fluro for leader ??... Trying not to stunkt my casting distance so Didnt wanan go to heavy. No real experiance using soft plastics like 2" Grubs in bloodworm color. Not to mention the JH, I saw on that vid I posted in other thread... I think it was, they use 1/8 oz jighead "fuse"brand prehaps?

Exmouth jigging assist cord
Submitted by GGs on Mon, 2015-03-02 12:07Hey guys,
Heading to Exy soon and will be jigging up there for the first time.
Just curious as to what weight assist cord people use up there? Jigs are 85-160g and PE3 outfit.
Metro and down south I use the varrivas ss 20 (100lb) cord. Would this be enough to pull most fish from the bottom up north or should i go up in thickness. Only worried about getting bricked by demersals not snip offs by macks.
Cheers

Exmouth over easter break
Submitted by Deeg on Mon, 2015-03-02 10:08Hi everyone,
Totally new to the forum. Just chasing some info regarding exmouth, so I'm hoping there might be some locals on here.
I am travelling to Exmouth from QLD by myself during the Easter break. I was looking to get some fishing in while there but it seems the majority of the decent charters are booked out over this period. A couple of quick questions...
Is there any decent land based fishing around exmouth during that time of the year?
I am also looking to do a bit of shallow spearfishing, is there any land based spots around exmouth, that I could get in and have a bit of a paddle and maybe spear fish or two?
Alternatively, if you know someone up that way that knows their stuff, has a spare spot on their boat and wants to earn a bit of coin, could you put me in contact with them.
ANy must do's while im in Exmouth? snorkeling spots?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Cheers
Deeg

Finding YGK Super Top or Sufix K-Braid
Submitted by InTheWind on Mon, 2015-03-02 07:36Short Ver.: Where the beepers do you get this stuff!!!???
Hi. I want to set up a handline for fun, also when I cannot be bothered setting up a rod. From lots of searching around I found the general options were straight high test mono line, nylon or other rope backing to mono/leader and less commonly YGK Super Top or Sufix K-Braid. Tried 40lb mono which I hated as the line came off line like a slinky. Rope option would likely help in the tangling problem but I seriously want to try some YGK Super Top or Sufix K-Braid first. Found YGK Super Top at Bluewater, and Oceanside Tackle and Marine(Asked, none of either currently). Sufix K-Braid is literally nowhere to be found online. Why are these 2 products so hard to find online? Is it because the main target is commercial fisherman(For winches) and sold in more commercial fishing supply stores instead?
family friendly fishing spots in freo
Submitted by Niko on Sun, 2015-03-01 21:20heading down to freo for lunch tomoro with the GF's family for her parents 30yr aniversary. her mums a big fishing fan, fish or not she just enjoys the experience as many of us do. that being said she loves whiting.
so just to help her enjoy the day after any tips on a quiet spot away from the crowds and swimmers for a bit of a fish and hopefully some whiting, even if theres herring or skippy around for fun thatd be great to. ive had a look on google maps and south beach looks like it could be ok but i suspect alot of beachgoers, or south mole but ive had limited luck there in the past and i dont know about whiting being caught there?
any tips are as always greatly appreciated of course!

Morons on the Upper Swan
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Sun, 2015-03-01 20:21I've been fishing the upper swan a bit lately and getting into some great bream but don't know if I will head out again on a long weekend. The amount of absolute fuckwits going well in excess of 10kn was ridiculous and the entire sides of the river were littered with mud and reeds etc that had been dislodged from the banks that were being completely destroyed. Just to top it off I looked up and couldn't believe that there was a boatload of people flying down the river in between Basso and South Guildford with someone on the back in a biscuit. I was secretly wishing they'd come off and get impaled on an underwater snag.
Unfortunately if this keeps up (knowing our State Govt) it will probably get to the point where delicate parts of the river like this will just be banned to boating altogether.

Lovely relaxing fishing , wtf Im wheel clamped!
Submitted by quadfisher on Sun, 2015-03-01 18:42No it hasnt happened to me , but its only a matter of time before someone is . ( north and south mole )
Theres lit up mobile signs there atm letting people know , a tad harsh I believe most would say.
So , you turn up for a nice relaxing fish on Friday evening after work at about 5.30 -6 hoping for a tailor or 2 .
Around 8 the tailor go quiet , so you have a snack at the car , and rig up for something bigger ( hopefully) but sorry mate , you must go at 8.30.
Look , a lot of young , less well off crew fish at the moles , which cause bugger all trouble That ive seen ( there their to fish!) and indeed the friendly atmosphere
Ive seen there during a snapper or salmon run is quiet refreshing in this day and age.
yes you can bugge roff for ten minutes and then come back( lose your spot? ) but why the hell should you .
Parking is never a problem most evenings, and only fishos usually stay that long ( apart from backpackers staying the night , a different issue by the way)
So maybe a call to rec fish west from me and others , due to this seemly discrimnation against fishers!.
Quote from council website below.............
There is free parking at Fremantle's South Mole and North Mole. You can walk around the red lighthouse at the North Mole and the green lighthouse at the South Mole. The moles offer a great view of arriving or departing ships.
At times the moles may by closed for works or because of weather conditions. Check the Fishing page for information.
There is a three-hour limit on parking and campervans are not permitted to park overnight. Vehicles overstaying will be issued with a parking breach notice or may be clamped or towed. If you receive a parking breach notice, please contact PES at www.pesau.com.au

Abalone season over again
Submitted by GGs on Sun, 2015-03-01 17:54Went down just north of mettams this morning for the last day/hour of the abalone season.
Got the bag limit of 15 quite easily again although average size seemed to be down since last month. Still got a few around 90mm which was good.
Does anyone know if there are many brown lips on the reefs around rotto in the deeper water? Wouldnt mind having a look next time.

Killing baby Black bream for the sake of it :(... some people...
Submitted by tassy on Sun, 2015-03-01 10:01So I was up at Ascot jetty an losing lures hand over fist lol...while these three....shall we say throwbacks in the genetic line... were catching baby Black Bream. Now thats fine, its what fishing is about right ?... wrong. These assholes were killing the bream an thowing em back in...When I asked why were they being such moronsand to knock it off, one said "I want big ones".. if we throw these back alive, we will catch them again...
This is what happens when you let cousins relate....I am kicking myself now for not filming it an giving it to fisheries... But I didnt think of it at time.

Haul net mandurah beaches
Submitted by willy2668 on Sun, 2015-03-01 07:53Hi just after some advice as the rule book is not that clear on haul nets off the beach. In the falcon south area of beach are you aloud to use a haul net being a 2 inch set net that is not set but run out in a arc and hauled back to the beach. I do this in Busselton we can do it pretty much from south of Bunbury to bunker bay . The rule book for these areas are not very clear either till the fisheries down here made a proper map of where you can do it.

Your ideal charter???
Submitted by SEAFORCE CORAL BAY on Sat, 2015-02-28 19:01We are currenty half way through our yearly refit and can not wait to get it back in the water and fishing again.
We are also half way through putting together our new website. It's all reday live at www.seaforce.org but it's only half done with most pages just sending back to the home page. I will let you know when its done, so don't judge it just yet.
As part of our new website I wanted to put together a coupple of example charter packages. Possibly including fishing (of course), accommodation, food, transport and mabey other things.
My question to all of you is what would you look for in your ideal charter?
We can do live aboard but are maily setup for just day charters, but can operatre and have good fishing ground form Carnarvon to Exmouth with the best of that between Coral Bay and Gnaraloo. We are set up to operate and fish at night. We can moore the boat overnight at several places up the coast over night allowing you to camp or stay in accomadation on the shore. We can carry up to 18 and fish up to 14 but ideal numbers for the boat are 6-12. We can do any type of fishing you wish from bottom boucing to spear fishing.
Here are some of the points I am looking for:
How many people, exclusive or not?
Where do you want to fish(shallow, deep)?
Where would you want to stay(Coral bay in a house, Gnarloo station, camping)?
Meals included (all meals, just lunch, supply your own)?
Day trips, overnighters, afternoon/sunset fish?
What would your budget be?
Any feedback and ideas would be much appreciated, Thanks.

assist hooks as stingers on soft plastics
Submitted by randall df223 on Sat, 2015-02-28 16:56Just saw this on face book. It is a photo from compleat angler nedlands, so I do not claim any credit what so ever for the idea. It looks like a good way of rigging a stinger onto a soft plastic. I will definitely try it because I don't know how many tails I lose. This should convert them into hook ups.
has any one else tried this?

Newbie weather question
Submitted by Tano on Sat, 2015-02-28 14:51I was hoping to get some advice on a planned fishing (or drop net crabbing) trip tommorow. We are heading out with my dad tommorow on his boat (28ft bayliner) but i wish to know will it be harder to catch fish when theres a 30% chance of thunderstorms in Perth with "Winds easterly 15 to 25 km/h tending southeast to southwesterly 25 to 35 km/h in the early afternoon then becoming southeasterly 20 to 30 km/h in the late evening." ?
Will swan river fishing be better than the ocean due to the high winds?
note: We hardly ever go fishing and Im not sure where is a good place to go, or whats in season so any tips will be handy.
Thanks
Edit: I saw the Sunday Boating thread and this is basically the same question. Please delete

Ideas on lures for flatty/Bream ???
Submitted by tassy on Sat, 2015-02-28 09:27ok so having been up to Ascot this morning, this time I struck out badly... even costing me one of my presous hand made Soft Plastics (thanks to hooked on plastics for his skills at making them)..... SO I was wondering on way home. Driving down Tonken I was going through what lures I have for what occasion.
SX 487 Ecogear... kinda small for flattys an very very light
Skinny pop JR 1/8 oz Not even sure what to use this thing on as its insanly light for my 2-4 KG rod.
38 SubDog 0/8 oz too small an cant seem to cast it very far at all....(Bream lure)
Savage gear 38F deep Diver Been using for bream, but all it seems to catch is blowies an 1 40CM Bream..... (Have a feeling that Bream was an act of god lol)
So... If anyone has any Advice I wanan go shopping today at Oceanside... Need a flatty lure or 2, an if anyone knows if a better Bream one, feel free....
(no bitching about fishing industry form me (I promise)....crosses fingers behind his back.....:p

Patagonian tooth fish - again
Submitted by meglodon on Fri, 2015-02-27 22:41I'm not sure that I have heard it right but on the radio ABC news there was a story that the Australian fisheries (I think it was) chased a boat the was fishing in the Australian Antarctic fishing zone illegally catching Patagonian tooth fish and the Australian authorities chased the boat all the way up to Christmas island before nabbing them.
If so that's one hell of a chase, did anyone else hear the story or was in on any of the TV news.

What to do
Submitted by johnno67 on Fri, 2015-02-27 00:53What to do have 225cc key west I imported it from the states 2 years ago have had five boats it's been the best boat I've ever owned fished 30 mile out of two rocks a lot and have caught some great fish towed it up north exmouth to derby spent a week on the boat at raft point croc creek horizontal falls and now of to Gnaraloo for two weeks in April .
the problem I have these days is I am retired and there is no one to fish with week days so the boat now is only getting used for the big trips which is only once a year what to do is it time to sell and get on a charter up north for that once a year trip you know where I'm coming from insurance maintenance it seems a waste but as I said earlier I've been through a lot of boats to find the perfect one
