Deckie Available tomorrow (Friday)

Hey guys got the day off tomorrow, looking to head out with someone. Forecast looks like a typical summer day, fresh early and easing late morning. Have all my own gear and licenses and can provide lunch and drinks. Willing to travel anywhere from Mandurah to Mindarie at any time of the morning. Skipper is welcome to take my share of fish if he/she wishes. My specialty is bird spotting.

Cheers.

What is better than catching your first grey band on the deep drop?

also was stoked to land a 10kg Harpuka as well.

Skipper outstanding, and a great day out with some great blokes.

Love it when a plan comes together.

Nearshore Seafood Smorgasbord

Had to head out solo today as conditions were great and my deckies pulled the pin (except my pot mate who I dropped off after retrieving them early).  It was a little disappointing that our pots had been pulled as they were all “off marks”, but I guess that’s what you get when we didn’t go out and check them when conditions were really good yesterday.  At least the pullers returned them to the water and we managed to get a couple overnight because we has baited them so heavily on Sunday.  Can’t complain about a red male jumbo and a big male white.  Conditions look crappy until Saturday so hopefully that will keep the pullers away!

Found some ground and set the burley up.  Quite a few wrasse, parrot and yellow stripy fish until the burley started to work and the skippy turned up (got another big moorwong first drop too!!!).  Hopes were high that the skippy  would bring in the sambos, but no.  No Dhu either :-(.

The King George did find me for a while but it was disappointing that one ran me around the floater so when they were there, I was untangling braid.  I’m sure my KG rig hooks are getting blunt and need to be changed out as I lost more than I landed.

My floating sand whiting got a very soft hit that was called for a squid.  A slow retrieve and it came to the surface.  There was a lot of trying to get him to come within net range but he always dropped off when he could see me.  I managed to keep him at the boat and hastily rigged up a jig arrangement with a whole whiting that I could “swap out”.  Fooled him, and got him in the boat (25cm tube length).

A nice day in really good conditions, and no reason to complain about what came home.  Doesn’t get much better than KG, cray and calamari.

Simrad V Raymarine

One of my mates sounders died last weekend and he is looking at replacing it. He has done his research and is tossing up between the Simrad 8inch and the Raymarine 9inch. I have a Raymarine and am very satisfied with it. I have another friend who has a Simrad and he is happy with that. The Simrad unit is close to an extra grand, and the sales man that he was talking to has picthed the Simrad better than well to him because they weren't even in the equation and now it's almost brought.

Can anyone assist before my mate goes and spends his hard earned dollars?

Magic Day

Had an ADO up my sleeve and checked the weather report with seabreeze saying it was blowing and WW saying it was gonna be a glass off. Confired with BOM and WW had the win.

Woke my 4y old up at 5:30am, had some toast, finished getting ready and was in the river by 7am. Started out trolling with the Yo Zuri Minnow and got a few strikes (I think) with no hookups so we drifted across the flats working the SX40 with no luck at all so moved out to the drop off and started working the ZX40 and bang, a little flathead. Went back to some broken shallower ground and hooked into a 33cm yellowfin bream which gave a nice fight on the 1-3kg rod with 1000 reel. After drifting back to the drop off again I was jigging the ZX40 and the rod bent over, after a few decent runs on the 6lb line and we had a 38cm flattie on board. I noticed some baitfish jumping around and cast into them about 20 times for no strikes.

The little fella wanted to have a swim after not having any luck catching anything with his handline or rod so I started up and headed to a nice beachy area when I noticed baitfish jumping again but this time I could also see something much bigger disturbing the surface. What followed was manic fun chasing a school of choppers around and casting into them and taking turns winding the line in. The little man was stoked to catch his first fish all on his own and if I must say did an excellent job of keep tension on the line.

All in all just a brilliant day.

Saltist Hyper VS Terez

hey all,

bit stumped on what rod to but for my Stradic 8000 with PE3 Braid your personal/professional opinion would be great, looking at the Terez line rating 15-30lb or the 20-40lb Saltist Hyper both 7,2''

will be taking it to Ningaloo as an all rounder for snapper/Macks and Gt's

cheers!

CALL ME CRAZY BUT....

Over the past few nights I've noticed on the seaweed I pull in little specks about the size of a grain of sand that glow when moved... And I'm not talking just a slight shimmer I mean it actually looks like little stars in my seaweed... Has anyone else ever seen anything like this or is my never-ending hunt for 1m+ mulloway starting to send my mind down the rabbit hole?

Sorry bout my phone camera simply didn't pick up the glowing sand in my seaweed

ill take this opportunity to say I don't use or recommend the use of LSD.

I caught a fish !!!!

/dances a jig... It was only 10cm long but I caught my first fish in a long arse time. On my bream rod too so I know it's defiantly e lol.

Only took me 9 months to catch an 1200$

Only sad part in all this, is fact I used to get exited when we caught 5 score of lobster in a string....now it's a single little 10 cm whiting. Lol.

Here are Some of the Best Moments for WA Recreational Fishing in 2014

Demersals on the Up

EXTENSIVE assessment of three of Western Australia’s key demersal scalefish species in early 2014 demonstrated that recovery of these stocks had begun, confirming that current management arrangements were working.

The stock assessment of the key indicator species (West Australian Dhufish, Pink Snapper and Baldchin Groper) focussed on the West Coast Bioregion, where a suite of recreational and commercial fishing management measures were introduced between 2008 and 2010.

Those management measures were designed to reduce both sectors catches by at least 50 per cent on 2005/06 levels, to reduce pressure on stocks and allow them to rebuild.

The assessment showed that the rec sector is playing its part as these targeted reductions are more than being met.

It's great to see the research confirming what many fishers on the water are reporting with good catches of dhuies and pinkies coming through.

Herring by the Dozen

RECFISHWEST last month welcomed news millions of Herring would be left in the water in a move to ensure the sustainability of WA’s most important fish.

The Fisheries Minister, Ken Baston, announced the closure of the commercial G-trap fishery for Herring and a reduced recreational bag limit of 12 fish per person per day will come into effect on March 1 this year.

While there is the reduction in the bag limit for recreational fishers that Recfishwest believes is a more drastic that needed,  the decision will leave hundreds of tonnes of spawning Herring in WA waters each year.

Woodside Northen Community Tour

Starting in April 2014, Recfishwest's annual northern tour was again a tremendous success.

The tour lasted more than five weeks and took Recfishwest's famous family fishing clinics, which have been running for more than 15 years, to kids throughout the northern half of the state.

Hundreds of children had a ball at more than 30 clinics across nine community centres from Carnarvon to the Dampier Peninsular.

These clinics are a popular and fun way to promote sustainable fishing to the next generation of WA fishers.

World Class Barra Playground

LAKE Kununurra moved closer to becoming a recreational fishing asset for the Kimberley and a major drawcard for tourists, following the release of additional Barramundi fingerlings into the lake in May.

In May 2014, the Kimberley Training Institute released more than 200,000 juvenile Barramundi in two stockings as part of the Department of Fisheries’ Lake Kununurra restocking program.

The Barramundi fingerlings averaging over 50mm in size were released at the Lake Kununurra side of the Argyle Dam wall.

New Chairman

RECFISHWEST welcomed a new Chairman in October.

After five years in the role, incumbent Andrew Matthews stepped down at the 2014 Annual General Meeting, and was replaced by Tim Bray.

Mr Matthews was a tireless worker for recreational fishing in WA during his time as Chairman, a period during which Recfishwest's role as the peak body for recreational fishers evolved dramatically.

Mr Bray said he was grateful for the legacy that Andrew leaves, but also very aware that there will be many challenges and opportunities ahead, and in facing them recognise how important our members are in providing input and direction.

"I am strongly motivated by the challenge of leading Recfishwest and representing the interests of WA’s recreational fishers as we drive towards securing sustainable, accessible, enjoyable and safe fishing for the state’s 740,000 recreational fishers. I am excited about continuing to build the effectiveness of our organisation and our professional standing within the wider community", Mr Bray said

Mr Bray, first appointed to the Recfishwest Board in 2012, was a non-executive director of Recfishwest and a past chair of the Recfishwest Communications Committee.

Licence Money Buys New Reefs

IT was announced in October last year that two exciting and innovative new metropolitan artificial reefs were set to be built using licence fees collected from WA recreational fishers through the Recreational Fishing Initiatives Fund (RFIF), supported by Recfishwest and the Department of Fisheries.

Two steel artificial reefs measuring 12m high, 10m long, 7m wide and weigh about 50 tonnes (the size of a four story building) will increase recreational fishing opportunities in metro waters as they will aim to improve fishing opportunities for species, such as Yellow Tail King Fish, Spanish Mackerel and multiple Tuna species.

The state's artificial reef program had already seen two successful installations in the South-West, off Bunbury and Dunsborough, which are producing great recreational fishing opportunities, with a third reef set to be deployed off Mandurah within the next year.

Prawning Tradition to be Reignited

With close to 1 million Western School Prawns stocked in the Swan River in 2013 and 2014, the age old tradition of prawning with the family on a hot summers evening is back on the agenda.

The 2013 stock will be of good size for the pot with 2014's stock not far off.

This project will attempt to address the decline of the recreational fisher for the Western School Prawn and in doing so engage fishers in the stewardship of the fishery and the Swan and Canning rivers.

The project will pilot the production and release of Western School Prawns over a 3 year
period and engage fishers through a community prawn watch program.

Improving prawn stocks over a short period will make river prawn fishing more accessible to the wider community, facilitating their connection to the river and its health.

Channel 9 News will give you an update tonight, the preview can be viewed here

Fishers Help Clean Up the Swan

RECFISHWEST was pleased with the response to a clean-up day on the Swan River on May 18.

Although the weather wasn't all that great, around 50 volunteers including families, local residents and kids turned out to help clean up rubbish around Garratt Road Bridge and Hinds Reserve in Bayswater.

The initiative was supported by Recfishwest, Swan River Trust, Clean Marine, City of Bayswater and Native Animal Rescue (who kindly provided their boat to ferry volunteers to collect rubbish on the other side of river).

The FADs Are In

Perth metro waters received a huge boost in December 2014, with two newly designed world class Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) deployed West of the ever popular Rottnest Island last week, allowing year round fishing opportunities.

Recfishwest CEO Dr Andrew Rowland said he was excited at seeing yet another project developed using recreational fishers’ license fees which will be used to enhance recreational fishing in our state.

South Coast Rock Fishing Safety Boost

A NUMBER of new rock anchor points, Angel Rings and rock fishing safety signs were installed along the South Coast in 2014.

Recfishwest, in conjunction with the Department for Parks and Wildlife and community organisations, installed six new rock bolts at Albany's Salmon Holes in early 2014, while 30 were placed along the Esperance coast in December, which is very popular with anglers but has also claimed the lives of a number of rock fishers.

Passing of  Recreational Fishing Champions

2014 saw the sad passing of two of WA's recreational fishing champions - Hal Harvey and Garry Lilley.

Hal had an extraordinary impact on the WA recreational fishing community, both with his business, the time-honoured Bluewater Tackle chain, and with his fishing writing for the Sunday Times and Western Angler over many years.

One of the sharpest minds in the recreational fishing industry Hal was always at the forefront of new trends in the tackle trade. During the last 3 years, Hal savoured some fantastic experiences on and off the water with family and friends, including trips to the Rowley Shoals, one of his very favourite locations, Shark Bay and Tasmania.

Whatever your hobby, pastime or interest you will likely know someone who works quietly and tirelessly behind the scenes. Garry Lilley was one of these people. He worked hard to ensure the sustainability of key recreational fish species, especially bottom fish such as Dhufish. When Garry saw Dhufish affected by barotrauma floating away after being released, he thought there must be a better way to release these iconic fish.

Enter the release weight, which Garry invented to take care of floating bottom fish, and which has now become mandatory for boats catching demersal fish in the west coast bioregion and carried by many responsible fishers outside of this area. Garry's simple invention has lead to increased survival of important demersal fish right across the state, country and most likely the world.

Rod Repairs

Hi all

I have a boat rod that I new to repair (New Guide on the Tip required). Any recommendations who repairs rods north of the river. I see old posts for Jim Head but he ha moved to NSW.

opinions... kimberley rod setup

Heading to a pearl farm north of broome for a couple months, just trying to decide if i should invest in another rod for chucking lures for barra and the like.

Got a Eupro twin-craft  jiggin rod (120g) with 4000 Exceller that will be fine for live-baiting etc, but possibly a bit stiff for chucking lures into tight spaces, tho i haven't tried... Is it worth getting anotehr rod (to match the exceller), or would I need a whole new setup for that?

Have almost zero experience up that way, so just after opinions, cheers.

preparing freshly caught octopus for bait

How does everyone prepare fresh occy for bait. I have read or been told somewhere that it's best to skin it so it does bloat up with water and also soak it in fish oil.
any opinions or other suggestions?

Better Half's First Dhu, and a Hook in the Foot

After many outings with my young fella, Jill was keen to try and get herself another KG.  With fresh bait in the pots yesterday, and her desire to get more crayfish (I thought she would be sick of them by now), she talked me into going and checking the pots and taking her fishing this morning – not that it took a lot of persuasion.  Conditions were forecast to be generally light and glass off during the morning.

We got to the ramp just after 6.15am leaving the kids in bed.  An uneventful launch and trip out about 5 miles and we pulled up on the pots.  Set up and get ready to go, got the first rope in, fed it through the winch and as soon as the slack was taken up and there was load the winch failed – bugger.  Too much of an ask to pull the heavily weighted pots from that depth so the exercise was abandoned.  Note – the winch is now fixed as it was only a bad connection thank goodness.

With the time spent tuning the HDS9 yesterday, I thought we may as well find some ledges and give it a go.  Had a good run on the floating pilchard early but alas it was dropped.  Put a bottom bait down and within 10 seconds was hit by something with quite a bit of size.  Hopes were high as it had good fight and the first colour was silver, but hopes were dashed when a 3-4kg Moorwong came on board.  I have got a few of these in the past and my research told me that they were the worst type of neighbor fish so back it went.  I must say the first hour or more was pretty slow with just a few wrasse and parrot with the odd yellow stripy fish.  I am completely convinced that the YSF are the pickers from hell.  Some go pro footage we took a while ago showed that they could strip a bait in seconds with minimal feel on the line.  It was all a little uninspiring and I was disappointed for Jill.

At about 8.15am, it all changed.  I don’t know if it was the tide starting to run or the good concentration of burly that had worked its way to depth but we were now fishing completely different waters.  First my floater went off with a solid fish that I called for a pup sambo.  Wrong, a nice 3.75kg Dhu came to the boat.  Jill then hooked something that wasn’t a wrasse or parrot and she landed a fighting skippy - I love it when the schools of skippy move it as it seems to stir everything up.  Next was Jill reeling in a small wrasse that all of a sudden got “upgraded” and she had her first experience of the little Ci4+ 4000 screaming with a big sambo on the end.  It spat it and the quite damaged wrasse was sent straight back on a floating rig with hooks in it.

It was then that Jill hooked up solid.  This was a nice fish and my only part in it was telling her to trust the gear, keep positive pressure on the fish and be gentle.  I called it for a sambo as it had nice strong runs and she did a really good job with it over 10 minutes or so.  It was almost disbelief when the 7kg Dhu came to the boat but it was an awesome capture on light gear and a credit to her fishing ability to land it.

No sooner had we got it on the boat then the floater went off again.  I struggled to pull the rod out of the holder given the power of the fish and handed it to Jill so she could feel the pull of the sambo.  She did well again and boated a 3.5kg pup, with lots of big followers, and I was imagining the next hour of arm stretching on big angry fish.  Jill commented on just how hard those sambos pulled as one half the size went harder than the Dhu.  With so much action and happiness, it was unfortunate our day was finished in an instant!

With all the action and just having landed her first sambo too, Jill went back to her seat and stood on a whiting hook that the young one had left on the floor – grrr.  It went in past the barb and Jill didn’t take well to my “it’s only a small hook and not too deep, let me get it with the plyers”.  So, we headed in so the doctor could cut it out.

Back at the ramp about 9.15am with nearly 11kg of Dhu was certainly not what we expected.  A few quality hours and an experience we will always remember – for both good and bad reasons, but mostly good.

water temp. warm spot

Here is the sst  for today. ...

Tomorrow/ monday-12th

hey guys I'm going out of two rocks tomorrow with my dad and was wondering if anyone has been getting any Samson fish at all also would we be better fishing in closer (20-30m)or should we head out deeper to direction bank (40m)to target dhu fish as we don't have many spots off two rocks.

Thanks Guys

How'd we all go today?

Was a good day on the water once the easterly dropped, we picked up 2 x Dhuies 2 x Breaksea 1 x Pinky and Baldy so worth the effort of dodging the fires to get to our launch point. I did see a lot of big boats being hauled up to Two rocks way so I guess it was busy there?

Learned a lesson today between Bcf and Oceanside....

Went into Bcf today cos I wanted some bait and asked guy where to find those bait catcher rig packs, along with what do you recommend..

His answer was "oh their over there somewhere in the isles next to so n so...so having no idea what I ws looking at I had to guess it...

Onto Oceanside two days ago, stopped in on way home to armadale,an asked about what baits I need to fish in xyz areas, he could not have been more helpful if he tried. Every time i go there I learn something. Every time I go to Bcf, I get bugger all cept an empty wallet. Be damn sure I'll never go to Bcf again after today. It's just annoying I have to travel 30 min down south st for anything :)..

Lastly an a shameless arse kissing well done Oceanside least you guys want to help. keep up the superior service.

WTF

Are these fish ? We drifted over this with all different baits and got nothing. Sorry for the dumb question...
