sounder scrolling speed
Submitted by just dhu it on Mon, 2010-04-19 11:57I presently use a Lowrance LCX 37 broadband sounder and when out in 30 to 50 mt depth of water i find the scrolling speed very slow, i have had the unit replaced twice so its not the sounder or the transducer unit and each time i have raised this issue with the supplier and been informed that it is working correctly. My issue is when travelling along say at 12 to 15 knots the speed of the ground formation displayed on the screen is extremely small ( length) .. or so i think .. i have set the scroll speed to maximum and the ping speed to maximum, this then activates hyper scroll speed.
when i travel along and i assess how far i have travelled across the water surface compared to how much information is displayed on the screen i must have missed alot of ground and iam not acurately seeing the bottom , ie i could travel a 100 mts across the surface but the sounder will only have about 30mm of recording going across the screen. iam aware that the scroll speed is slower the deeper you sound, but i would like know if this is standard for a Lowrance units or what other sounders scroll speed display .

Going north and need new rod... help!
Submitted by lunker on Mon, 2010-04-19 09:54Hi guys,
I'm flying to Karratha with the missus in July and driving to Exmouth/Coral Bay for some r&r and plenty of fishing of course. Haven't been up that way before, and will only be fishing off the shore so was planning on taking the 7' td sol with about 6kg on it.
Problem is, I've been advised by several people that Qantas are strict about luggage and the rod+tube will be over the 2.1m which they allow. Has anybody had experience with this?
So since the rod is a one piece, I may have to buy something else for the trip instead (2 piece) and bring a shorter tube. Does anybody have any recommendations? I love the Sol but if i cant take it.... I'm not overly rich so probably a limit of a coupla hundred tops. Would a 7 footer with about 6kg cover most areas? Will be chuckin metals mainly unless I get any other tips. The reel's an exceler 3500
Cheers for ya suggestions guys
Chris

Fish ID help - no pic sorry
Submitted by wacraig on Mon, 2010-04-19 07:45Morning Everyone,
Got up for an early morning walk on Saturday waiting for the wife and in-laws to get down to the boat. Walking along beside the rocks at Mandurah Marina there were a number of leather jackets (nice sizes too) tooling idly past. Stopping to watch for a bit I noticed a flash of colour in closer, within the rocks.
Positioning myself a little better there were two fish in between the rocks.
For want of a better description they both had a shape like a mangrove jack / emporers, were blueish in colour, with black vertical stripes. Taking into account the magnification of the water they would have been around 20 cm long, if not a shade longer.
Yes, I had partaken of a couple of beers the night before..... but am pretty certain I wasn't seeing things.
Any assistance would be appreciated.

Catching Mullet
Submitted by John the Pom on Sun, 2010-04-18 21:43Went up to Quinn's Rocks on Saturday for a couple of hours with the young'un for the second time.
The first time we went we managed the usual herring and skippy, but on Saturday we landed a couple of decent tarwhine, some nice fat gardies and a couple of herring then it went dead.
The young'un breaks out the berley blob and proceeds to catch a couple of monster mullet that came off at his feet.
We ended up with two, one quite a decent size as well all caught on prawn.
Anyone else caught one on prawn, I didn't think they took prawns?
A good day overall with tarwhine and mullet being new species to tick off, sorry no photos as we forgot the camera.

Submitted by fords_rule85 on Sun, 2010-04-18 17:16Hey guys, just picked up my new boat last weekend so was keen as mustard to get it out this weekend. I went out both saturday and sunday but had little to no luck either day. I went out to the mewstones for some tailor then headed out toward rotto from there and then back to the west end of garden island. I spent most of the day looking at the sounder, I have sussed out what ground looks like what but my problem is im not sure what i am meant to be looking for ground wise e.g lumps, holes, flat ground ect. Any help would be much appreciated.Thanx

G Loomis decision
Submitted by dd83wa on Sun, 2010-04-18 16:46Hi guys,
Just after someones experiences and/or thoughts on G Loomis DSR series rods.
I am looking at either a DSR820-S GL2 but am wondering if the extra $150 is worth spending on the GLX? I've read the GLX is made from a higher modulus carbon (bit more return) but i'm not sure i'd notice the difference in the real world, having just got into light spin stuff.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

does anyone follow the almanac
Submitted by drew_ward on Sun, 2010-04-18 14:40I was just wondering if anyone takes any interest in following the almanac.ive been using it for nearly 2 years now and have found it really helpfull in some circumstances such as trout fishing.i found on the black days(best)there will be fish rising everywhere and alot of activity and on the white day(poor)you would be lucky to get a redfin.i take note of what fish i catch and what time and by doing this i have found 1 day of the month(got 2 do with moon phases)that the black bream really go on the bite. its a well kept secret of mine:):)i dont let this tiny yellow book tell me when or not to go fishing but i just like to see if it really has an impact on fishes feeding.whats your thoughts about it??

Tha beer was finally startin to calm my nerves and Matt T pulled in a monster flathead no net, no gaf equaled no flathead on board!!!!What a loss that was his dinner no doubt!!! We put out some more berley and waited for tha herring to start doing their thing. Bang one bucket = 40 herring boat limit and we were stoked. So glad to have got out today. Thanks Matt's. Coral Bay Report
Submitted by Ollie on Sun, 2010-04-18 11:02Spent the 1st week of my school hols at Coral Bay with a mate and his family/family friends. the wind was blowing it's guts out almost every day so didn't really get as much fishing as i would normally have done in and the water was murky, but was still a great trip with some good fishing, snorkeling and 4wd.
Trip started with a missing wheel on arrival in CB late avo followed by chill sesh.
4wd the second day.
3rd day took the boats out for a snorkel.
We were greeted back at the boat ramp by the local QLD Grouper.
4th day took the boats to the north passage followed by a change in plan to stay on the inside of the reef, Caught heaps of red throat, small spangles and chinamen.
5th day went fishing on my mate's, uncle's boat as my mate was sic the last 3 times. One of the most exciting fishing sessions of all time. Headed out the north passage and decided to troll, 5min's later we found a large bait ball being dive bombed by birds with tuna launching I rigged my starlo with a tristie and casted into the middle of the school. after seconds of the lure hitting the water fish of all species were all over it. hooked up to which was found out to be a yft that launched out of the water cutting through my 20lb leader with ease. I was gutted but quickly rigged a soft plastic and re-casted, hooked up and held on. After multiple runs I got colour and was faced with a gold spot. by the time it was landed we had drifted off the school. We drove back on to the school, I casted the SP out again was on, but this time it was bigger after some solid runs the hook pulled. Confused with how this could of happened I reeled the lure back in to find a straightened jig head. After this i moved to heavier gear. I tied a 200g sea rock onto my v-system and dropped down after a few lifts of the rod the water turned white under the boat. i watched as fish hit the jig and felt weight. i pulled up another large goldspot. happy with the catch we went in. unfortunately I didn’t have my camera on that boat so no photos whilst on the water.(normally I wouldn't keep goldspot but there were thousands and I wasn't the skipper but all fish that were kept were eaten.)
Day 6 got some flat water and went for some bottom fish.
It was hard work getting past the sharks but we still managed some respectable fish.
And some not so respectable.
happy with the feed we headed in for breaky. that afternoon we drove down to the beach for some oysters and beach cricket.
(sorry about the sideways pic)

Last day in CB we decided to relax and went out on the coral breeze.
And a vid of it all that I will post later.
Thanks for reading or just looking .

Submitted by fords_rule85 on Fri, 2010-04-16 18:24Hey guys, I got myself a newer boat last weekend, its a 4.8m trailcraft and have been waiting all week to get her out. Just curious and not asking for any spots but is there much to be caught out the back of garden island?? I dont mind going a few k out the back of the island but not ready to head out around rotto yet. Im hoping to break a few pb's with the new rig and havent caught a local snapper, salmon or dhufish yet coz my previous boat was a old dinghy and spent most of my time fishing in and around the cockburn sound. Thanx for any advice
